Sully:
I saw your invite for an open seat. Wish I had been home. I would have taken you up on it. I fish smallies on Wissota all the time. Would you like to join me some time after work? Or play hooky one afternoon this week? I thought about fishing the tuesday night league and attended the opening meeting at the View, but I decided against it because I’m out of town too much to do well in the league.

The bass and walley tournament on lake wissota is on saturday july 15th. I don’t have a number for you to call. It is put on by the chippewa bass club. Perhaps someonelse will have a number for you to call.
I’ve been about 1/4 to 1/2 mile up the Chipp from the Mississippi. But my bass boat wouldn’t go any further.
Most of the river is very shallow above there. I saw 3 guys standing in the middle one day and their ankles were just barely covered by water. The bends are especially shallow and hard to get through. You can probably get farther with a flat bottom than I did.
I don’t retie very often because I use spider wire and power pro lines. They don’t seem to break even when they get frizzy. But I sharpen my hooks regularly during the day. My hook hone is attached to my seat within easy reach. If you don’t sharpen your hooks so they stick in your finger nail without much pressure, they are not sharp enough and you will miss and probably have missed strikes that you should have caught.
Do you plan to fish all 4 of the Wisconsin tournaments?
Do you plan to travel with your non boater?
I fish the lake wissota open nearly every year. Won it in 98 & 99. It is held the second saturday in July. (July 14th last year). Registrations are not out yet for 2006.
It is actually 2 tournaments. One for bass and another for walley. You can pay double the entry and fish in both. It is put on by the Chippewa Bass club and takes off out of the Rod & Gun club boat landing near St. Joseph hospital on the west shore of the big lake.
Tim:
I would like to be your non-boater for the mississipi river tournaments, if you don’t already have one.

Jason:
I am still having trouble picturing the flat.
Are you talking about the rocky point with the little cabin on it that is just upstream and across the river from mallard? They have a fairly long dock that is real close to the water (hard to skip under). Maybe we will have to share a boat this spring. You can show me how to fish walleys and I’ll show you how I fish smallies. I saw a boat with a man and woman trolling with orange boards on the chipp one day. Might that have been you?
Jason:
If my memory is accurate (no guarantees there)I picture the farm 100 or 200 yards East of the base of the hill in the picture. That means put your back to the island, drive east until the depth flattens out then go 100 or 200 yards or more. As I said, I have never been able to identify the foundations on my locator. Hope you have better luck finding it than I have.
Jason:
re. Up in the Chip, we focused on a large rocky flat, 8-12 feet deep, that is ringed on 3 sides by deep water (20+ feet deep).
I fish the chipp above wissota all the time. I haven’t found a flat 8-12′ deep with 20′ water on 3 sides on the river. Or if I have, I haven’t recoginized it as you describe. Are you possibly talking about just above malard resort? Can you tell me where it is? I’m always looking for deep smallie haunts.
Bob
I have seen photos of the lake before it was flooded. Some of them included the building of the railroad bridge between little lake and the big lake. The farm house and barn (I don’t remember if there was a silo) with a hill just to the west of it was in one picture. That hill is now the island on the big lake just to the north of the railroad bridge between the big lake & the little lake. I have run over it a lot of times with sonar but never identified the foundations. I have been told there is a silo just below the waters edge bridge on the main lake. But I have not seen it.
Paul:
I wish I could fish the wissota open again this year.
But I will be in Las Vegas for the birth of our first Grand daughter.
I am fishing the Gander Mountain Tournament on Wissota on June 13th. Are you in the Gander Trny?
The smallies are always biting somewere on Wissota. When you come out of O’neil Creek and go under the bridge start fishing both sides of the bank all the way out to the river for walleyes, northerns, muskies, bass and pan fish. One day in 3 casts I caught 2 nice smallies and a 48 inch musky off the same spot in the oneil creek area.
You can usually find some crappies along the rock bluff on the west side of the Chippewa Up stream from Oneil creek.
If you need a fishing partner, I’ll probably be up there some time that week. Just give me a message before you go and I’ll show you around the lake.
very few crappies are in the brush piles yet. But they are close. Yesterday I talked to a guy at the rod & gun landing who had two walleyes over 16″ from the little lake. They were caught in 25′ of water. Don’t know the bait. Smallies are just about done spawning even on the main lake. I caught about 20 yesterday. 2 over 4lbs and 8 over 3 lbs. What a day!
Do you have a web site for gander mountains 2004 schedule of tournaments and rules? I can only find the 2003 lising.
I’d like to fish the wissota trny. Maybe all of the wisconsin trnys.
Steve:
Lances prop shop in forest lake mn quoted me $135 to rebuild my 5 blade SS prop. That included balancing and putting more cup in the blades. That sounds high compared to $50 that Mike Finke says he paid. I think I’ll see what I could get for a trade in on a new prop, before I send it in for repair.
Brian:
Is this the prop shop in Forest Lake that you mentioned?

BBBane:
Were you catching those bass in the mississippi? Or on Wissota? I was at wissota on tuesday. Water Temp in the Yellow river was about 50 degrees. No smallies up shallow yet. But it won’t be long now.
Fluke:
would those big lake smallies be on Wissota?
That’s where I will be for the opener.
They should be turned on by then.
It has been a while since I fished mead. Has several bass club tournaments on mead. For the opener I would go to the right from the landing. Go up to the bridge and fish the shallows on either side of the bridge. They should be warmed up and hold fish. If the bridge area doesn’t work, go back to the landing and go to the left from the landing to the far end of the lake. Cat tails around Island and north west corner of lake are good for bass. If fish are not in the shallows, try the deep water in the narrows, it holds some good bass. Let me know how you did. Also, look out for the muskies, they live in the area around the bridge. Also caught a musky off the dock near the boat landing on a white spinner bait.
what pool were you on?
How would I identify the wing dams you were fishing?
were the wing dams on outside turns or in other locations?
Were the bass on the front or back of the dams?
Did you have any luck on closing dams?
I would like to fish pool 4 this weekend and would like to put a pattern together before I go..
The sport shop in Onalaska, WI. bought out miller wobbler years ago. But I don’t know if they still have them nor if the shop is still open. Haven’t been there in years. I still have two miller wobblers. But the weed guard fell off both of them.
