Steve…….. Thats an old picture that has been floating around for quite some time now…. all hoax and obviously the picture is doctored…. there is no way in the world that guy could pick up a cat that big !

Cougars are legal to shoot in Iowa… they are not protected by law and there is no plans in the near future to change the law to protect them as of now.

You know… everyone is so damn scared of how we are going to be precieved and that PETA will use it to their benefit…. Screw Em’…. I am no longer going to hide and bury my head in the sand and worry about PETA…. PETA is controlling your lives and they are “accomplishing” their goal when they make you feel like you can’t enjoy your sport any longer…. I say enjoy yourselves in your hobbies and passions and just ignore these ignorant people. I for one will no longer worry about PETA or anyone else for that matter.

Want to shoot a crow ? I say have at it…….. And I hope you shoot a bunch of them flying pest/rats/cockroaches

Flushing them and calling them back would be alright. I don’t see any problem in that. But what is the deal with putting the dog in a scent proof bag ???????

What would be the purpose of this ? Its not like a turkey would smell the dogs.

I really don’t think this type of hunting will be approved. It would lead to many wounded birds. Hell you would almost have to have a sidewinder missile to knock one of these bullet proof A-10’s out of the air. Its hard enough to get a head shot on the ground, but to do it on a flushing bird would be foolish.

I would take her to the vet and have her put on some antibiotics… but as mentioned…. rest and healing time. She will be back out there in no time.

5 days and counting…… Man I hate opening day, well at least the night before. Seems that I can’t ever get to sleep the night before. Hell, 2 years ago I was so excited that I thought I had everything in my truck before we left. I mean I double and triple checked everything… dogs, lic., snacks, drinks, extra boots and socks, shells….. got half way to the 1st field and realized I forgot my damn shotgun in the garage…….. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I too agree that the standing corn is going to make it alittle tougher. But hey, gotta leave some for later in the season, right.

Good Luck to everyone and have a safe hunt.

    Ryan,
To answer your question about my favorite color of GSP…. I am partial to the solid liver as they have become hard to find…. white with liver spots has become more popular. But my favorite is a Solid Roan color. When we breed Grif, all of his pups came out solid liver except for 1. And it was a solid roan “female”. Man was she a beautiful dog. If that pup would of been a male, he would of been mine today.

Here is the website on Drs Foster & Smith Hunting Vest where you can get the vest that I use on my dogs. I like these vest the best as they are made out of Cordura material and the black is elastic streatchable material that help hold the vest to the dogs body. Also the zipper is on the top of the vest and goes from the head to the tail so it won’t unzip while the dog is running. I have only had the vest come off once in 8 years of hunting and that was due to the last bad winter we had when most of the birds were killed off about 4 or 5 years ago. I tried to hunt toward the end of the season in very very deep snow and the vest filled up with snow and pulled off the dogs. Other than that they will stay on perfect and has saved me alot of stitching. I usually only put them on the dogs during deer shotgun season or when I know that I am going to hunt an area with alot of rough brush like mulitflora rose bushes. There was one time last year that I wished I had put them on the dogs as Grif went through a barbed wire fence after a downed bird at full speed. I didn’t see him at the time and he ripped his chest wide open. I know that if I had the vest on him that his injury would not of been as severe as it was. They will rub at the inside of the front legs some, so try to stretch out the leg openings as much as you can to help allivate this problem. But still there is going to be some rubbing of the leg area if you have a dog that has some wheels on him. So here is what I do with them then. Just put some vasoline on the dogs legs where the vest will rub and this will help out a great deal where you won’t notice much rubbing at all. I also use the vasoline on their feet, around the nose and around the eyes when we are hunting dry grass or areas where the weeds and cover can turn a dog raw. PS…. the vasoline will not affect the dogs smelling senses at all and will help keep the dogs nose from turning raw on those all day long hunts. Anyway, Drs Foster and Smith is about the only place I know of that sells these vest right now….. they are great and I highly recommend them. Nothing out there on the market even compares to these. Plus if you get a tear in one, its much easier to sew up the vest then the dog.

    Nick,

Just email me ………. Thanks for the compliments there Ryan. I appreciate it very much. I can no longer use Grif as a stud as I had to have the jewels removed from him due to a prostate problem ………. But Jeter is very willing and ready to go. Jeter has an excellant nose, automatically backs and honors points (I had nothing to do with this, he just does it) and is the best retrieving shorthair I have ever seen. This dog will drive you nuts about retrieving. He constantly wants to fetch something.

Jeter is on the left and Grif is on the right……picture is from last year late season pheasant hunt. And yes there was a rooster in there.

Just click on Jeter and Grif for a picture of both dogs.

    James,
Thanks for the post. Feeding pheasants in the wintertime can be a difficult thing to do. Like mentioned, the feed area needs to be placed so that they do not become targets of predators. And then you have the problem of deer eating most of the feed given the chance. But one very important thing that I would like to point out that wasn’t mentioned. If snow cover is deep enough that the birds can’t get to their normal food source and feeding is required. Then the birds will not be able to get to the gravel either. Which is very important for them to be able to digest the feed that was put out for them. So, If someone is going to set up a feed area for pheasants. Not only do you put out shelled corn for them, but also put a bunch of sand/gravel in the area too so the birds can get their required gravel to help digest your offerings of food. Food for thought, so to speak. Great article though. Thanks

Great mount Ryan. Glad to see you have it back. If you don’t have any room for it at your house, I’m sure I can find a spot some where in mine to show off your bird. I will make sure that you get full credit
