We went on a 33 day cross country camping tirp last year with the family. One of the neatest things we did, (if someone going has a projector and laptop) was put a sheet out on the camper and played a movie outside on the camper. We did it at every camp site we stayed at. It took about 5 mins and familys from all over were bringing chairs over to watch the movie. We would pop popcorn over the fire for everyone. The kids really loved it! If you are interested and nobody has a projector, shoot me a message and if it worked out you could use mine. I love family trips!

I went out today. Birds were holding very tight. It was cold, but with a face mask it was not that bad. I was shocked that I saw 3 other groups in the areas I hunted. Will be back at it again tomorrow after a little pheasant risoto tonight!
December 4, 2012 at 12:57 am #127690Nice report, sounds like a good time!
I don’t really agree with the last poster. I hunt a lot west & s/w MN and have found the hunting to be pretty good. I don’t think you can really hunt an area one week a year and get a feel for how good the hunting is. You need to pound out the state land and find what is good and what is not worth hunting. I have put in the time and know the spots well. We have shot limits nearly everytime out and have yet to be skunked. Last year we mainly saw roosters and it was tough hunting, but this year we have seen a ton of hens and plenty of roosters. I think if the mild weather continues next year will be pretty good. I guess my point is that you need to put in the time and weed out the bad areas before saying all is lost.
Is it as good as it was 4 years ago, no! But plenty of birds to make it fun!
However, I don’t mind the lack of bird hunters out
October 24, 2012 at 5:11 pm #125448I hunt almost only public land and I think I do pretty well. The best advice I can give to a guy who hunts alone or with one other person, is to hunt with the wind at your back. If you have a good dog and you trust him, you will see more roosters in shooting range doing this. I swear by it!
September 13, 2012 at 1:57 am #1098512smashed ritz and season all. For the Gluten free folks I have found that “Goodies” mix seasoned to tast is very good. It is a nice light breading.
September 10, 2012 at 4:46 pm #122902I have that blind and hate it. You cant hide it, it stands way to high. The nice thing is that when the birds are working they just dont seem to care. My dog lifts it off the ground when he gets in, but when he is down it is fine. He is 60lb and not that tall. I wish I would have purchased the “hut”, the round one. It sits much lower, but it is even smaller. This thing just sticks out to me.
September 6, 2012 at 8:51 pm #10970386 year old Zeke cooling off in Milacs this summer and hanging out with his best bud the other day.
August 30, 2012 at 3:11 pm #1095794The hits in our group are chilli, sloppy joes and lasagna. All warm up very well!
April 10, 2012 at 8:03 pm #119847Tell me about it.. I keep my wife warm at night thats for sure Thanks for the advice. I also found a post from 2008 about freezing, I do need to get a food saver soon!
November 29, 2011 at 9:21 am #1012877Goodyear marathon X3.. I did the carlisle route a couple times, never again!
November 23, 2011 at 12:02 am #115406It just really sucks. Today I drove 2hrs sw and got my birds 35 minutes into it.. Would have been nice to have another guy to make the day a little longer. However, I think I am going to stick with solo hunts for the rest of the year except for the few times I take guys that only get out once or twice a year. On a side note, the dog was a rockstar today. What a feeling when you can’t take the smile off of your face because you can’t believe he just did that.
Still very frustrated about the situation the other day.
Sad to hear that it happens all too often
November 21, 2011 at 6:08 pm #115229I called him this morning to chat.. He did tell me he went hunting yesterday, but told me he went out near benson for the day . He also told me they did not shoot at a bird but who knows if that was the truth or not. I do put a lot of time into my hunting due to hunting all public land and take pride in finding places like that. Guess it is time to start blindfolding the dog so he don’t spill the beans .
I am done with that friend
November 21, 2011 at 3:44 am #115167Most areas I have hunted down sw the water has been so low it didn’t make it to the cattails. The muck should be hard to walk on tho . Little more walking this year but it has been pretty good!
November 10, 2011 at 5:19 pm #1008059Was up last night in the 30 mph winds and snow… Forcast said windy, but clear! Boy were they wrong. Great night, they are on the feed!
Went out of Terrys… Funny that with the nice weather only 2 other boats used that access.
October 28, 2011 at 11:46 am #113329It was a very odd year. We went in sept and it was 85 and sunny and no ducks around, the locals said they moved on already. We went back two weeks later and still no ducks and fewer geese. We still shot a lot of geese, but the numbers were just down. I think the locals said 40% or less of fields were planted in our area and most of the potholes were dried up. Thats my guess as of why our area was low with numbers of birds. Still a blast, but just an odd year. Cant wait for next year!
October 24, 2011 at 9:15 pm #113004This was the first year I filled it out on the online forms. They made me fill the form they had at customs out due to the lack of carbon copies. Mine was not signed! Thought it was dumb that they have that option of printing it if you can’t use it. Oh well! It only takes a second to fill out, but still! What part of Canada you going to? And good luck!
September 29, 2011 at 3:18 pm #111268Many places to get licenses, they just close early! I just got back.. It was mid 80s all week with not a cloud in the sky. Shot a ton of geese but the ducks were few and far between, and that is odd. We scouted and scouted but never found enough ducks to put a hunt together. We countined to shoot geese all week and like always it was a blast. Leave again in two weeks. I sure hope the major migration gets going where we are heading!
Good luck
September 22, 2011 at 7:07 pm #110670I go 2xs a year once to manitoba and once to saskatchewan. We don’t see any specs in manitoba but we get a few in saskatchewan. The farther west I believe is better for specs. If you want ducks, snows and canadas you can start north of North Dakota and drive to you find the birds you want to hunt. Plenty of water this year and all you need to do is fill out a form at the boarder and pay a fee for guns.. And yes look in advance where to buy a license. If you get in really late or really early in the day it can be difficult to find one. Good luck, It is awesome!
August 24, 2011 at 5:50 am #109064They were put away pretty muddy and the bottoms are almost black. My opinion has always been, if they are close enough to notice dirt or blood on the sock, they are close enough to die! Maybe the hose or power washer is a quicker way.
Thanks!
August 20, 2011 at 8:45 pm #989788I just sold a 1970 something 6 horse last weekend at a garage sale for $200. It had not been ran in a long time.
August 3, 2011 at 1:35 am #985810I thought those were pumkinseeds also. We were on vacation last week up north and got many 10 inchers and one that went over 11. They looked just like that, I thought they were pumpkinseed also. This is the only trip I fish sunfish and it is a blast. Either way, they are big, tasty and fun to catch! Nice work
June 12, 2011 at 7:20 am #972749Run it.. Have been in many boats that have done that and never leaked!
May 30, 2011 at 8:18 am #969825I have been there a few times and in Ear falls. I am yet to catch a small northern on that lake. Big is good! The group I go with will be up there at that exact time. good luck!
May 16, 2011 at 3:41 am #966227I have not heard back from him yet, but I can’t remember the last time I saw a motor hood on the side of the road. The fact that it was on a road I used and right at the start of my drive, it has to be. His post does not indicate what type of motor. If anyone saw a red lund explorer on Mille lacs trolling cranks with a T8 that didn’t have a hood, it was me. I felt like that guy. Thanks again for the heads up!
May 15, 2011 at 11:59 pm #966195Dang, this is it. I live in Anoka! Amazing, you guys are the greatest!
