For starters if your buddies have the same drill, Id have them use yours and you theirs and see if they have issues and vice versa. As weird as it may seem to be it could 100% be you that is the problem.
I had issues with my strikemaster the first few times I tried it but I was letting up on the throttle just as I was about to break through. Now I hold it wide open the whole time and no issues whatsoever.

I am just sorry you bought the Calm auger, A buddy bought their gas auger a few years back and that thing was the biggest piece of junk ever.
My other buddy is able to use it and it didn’t always do this i also got the thing for $200

To be fair it was just a blue Strikemaster. Those Solos can be very finicky to start, but mine was fantastic. There is a routine to starting them and the gas lines were known to go bad but other than that it was fantastic. Now I have an electric 40v and wont go back. Something I never thought I would say.
