We stayed at Lac Seul Lodge the 2nd week of Sept. Nice place, nice camp boats good folks. Fishing was pretty good. nice sized fish, but very windy so boat control was difficult. Caught the best fish when the wind was the worst. Go figure.

OK, thanks for the input so far guys. We’ve narrowed it down to Gullrock or Lac Seul. One guy is concerned about crowding on Gullrock and thinks Lac Seul will have a more wilderness feel. I don’t care if it’s bumper boats if the fishing is better that’s where I want to go. Comments??? Thanks!
December 10, 2009 at 10:23 pm #822392I was kinda hoping that it wouldn’t freeze this year. Looks like I’ll be disappointed. We killed crappies all spring long so they are definitely in there. Finding them on BC is always the challenge. Be careful, BC is deep and there are a lot of springs on the north end.
October 14, 2009 at 4:34 pm #809150Tell us how you do. I’m looking at going to Guttenburg this weekend. Is the ramp fixed and functioning now? I haven’t been up there in quite a while.
August 2, 2009 at 1:55 pm #794838You want a rock or at least sand bottom. Forget the muddy bottomed areas unless there is rock near by. Find an area with deep water and fish the shallows near by at prime time and you’ll do OK.
July 30, 2009 at 4:21 pm #794283Pitching jigs with about 2/3 of a ringworm and half a crawler through the current seams works for me this time of year. Food is plentiful this time of year so you have to be there when they are feeding or make them bite (crankbaits).
July 9, 2009 at 4:06 pm #789356I haven’t been out much recently. Did go last Friday and picked up a nice eye on a crankbait. Water has been high for mid-summer and a bit on the dirty side.
May 27, 2009 at 3:01 pm #779520The crappies’ IQ’s have gone up a lot in the last month. Sloooooow falling natural looking stuff was still taking them on Sunday. In other words no 1/16th oz jigs with a minnow, needed. Water was still very clear on Sunday. Don’t know what it will do with all this rain.
May 18, 2009 at 1:31 pm #777527I cruised a lot of shoreline Sunday and didn’t see many bass and they were all small. The heat this week might get things going. It would have been nice for the rain to end in the morning like it was supposed to.
May 17, 2009 at 11:37 am #777345Any size to them? I’d say the average size this year is a little smaller than usual. Is that what you’re seeing? They are fun to catch either way though. Take a kid fishing it’s a sure thing when the yellows are on.
May 14, 2009 at 9:13 pm #776871It was pretty high on Saturday and a bit cold. No need to get there at dawn this time of year. Clarity wasn’t too bad throughout the lake though. Who knows with the rain we’ve gotten this week and are set to get though.
May 12, 2009 at 9:39 pm #776178Tough day at Brushy on Saturday. That front going through Friday night didn’t help the situation much. It’s still pretty cold over there. Sounds like Clear Lake is the place to be.
April 24, 2009 at 5:14 pm #770821Did you have to find some deep water, at least nearby, or are they roaming the shorelines? This year is soooo wacked with these low water levels.
April 23, 2009 at 1:25 pm #770550An inflatable dam has an air bladder that raises and lowers the height of the dam depending upon what the powers that be want the river level to be. In Waterloo they are doing it with the idea that the extra 4 feet of water depth above the dam will mean more boating in the river downtown. I hear they used to get the river dredged for free until some City leader decided that the dredging company should pay the City so they quit doing it. Don’t know if that’s true or not, but it sounds like Waterloo to me.
April 21, 2009 at 1:24 pm #770173We’re getting an inflatable dam here in W’loo too. A guy who used to live on the island told me it will raise the water level about a foot at San Sousie. Big deal, now wait for someone to bust up their boat on the wingdam above the island, or worse. . .
April 19, 2009 at 9:34 pm #769747Let’s hope the good fishing is working its way down river. I did great at Nashua on Friday, very little in Cedar Falls Saturday. It would help if the river didn’t look like a little creek in the middle of summer.
April 5, 2009 at 6:34 pm #765911There were lots of wierd guys out this weekend. Pretty hit and miss has been my experience. I thought this snow would turn them on ahead of its arrival, but I was wrong. It sure is fun trying though.
March 23, 2009 at 2:00 pm #761448I saw some northerns caught and got a 14″ eye. Nothing too hot and heavy, but based on the number of people out something must be getting caught. Wind was brutal Sunday night which made it difficult.
March 16, 2009 at 6:18 pm #759139Tried for a couple hours on Sunday. River looks great in Cedar Falls, but the fish haven’t showed up yet. Whoever is running the dam needs to pay attention, all the water was running through the gates with nothing going over the dam. That screwed up the flow more than a little.
February 11, 2009 at 4:58 pm #747166Somebody is going to go through the ice before the season is over. It looked like a river for the 1st 100 yards off the north boat ramp on Saturday. If we’re lucky the thaw will be quick so that nobody will be tempted to drive on the ice when it starts to go. No fish is worth it, just keep that in mind everybody.
February 2, 2009 at 5:08 pm #743660torch the shack next time!
I know the DNR guy is pretty visible, I’m sure a few littering tickets would get the word out.
It’s a shame on such a great lake too.
January 12, 2009 at 5:25 pm #736411Ice fishing the lakes has been pretty decent so I haven’t tried the river. If it ever warms up I’ll give it a shot. Post something if you get out there.
January 9, 2009 at 6:31 pm #735693Good luck getting anyone to post about Big Creek. Sorry I can’t help ya.
December 30, 2008 at 2:27 pm #732634Brushy is about 90 minutes from Cedar Falls. If you go, be careful, it’s very deep(even close to shore) and the ice is variable.
December 9, 2008 at 9:50 pm #727400Be careful on Brushy. It’s deep and there are some springs on the NE end.
May 27, 2008 at 1:23 pm #688171Stinking wind. It made fishing difficult again Saturday. I paid my respects to my uncle Curt the Iwo Jima vet who is buried in the Duncombe cemetery then I tried the crappies. You could catch them if you could find them. Let’s just say you could build a campfire with all the sticks in the bottom of my boat by the days end. I’d recommend cruising until you see some hovering in the trees, then slowing down and fishing. Stealth is also important since they’ve seen lots of lures.
May 19, 2008 at 1:18 pm #686122Well it wasn’t easy with the wind, but we caught about 20 crappies and several bass on Saturday. The wind kept us out of a couple places I wanted to fish. I don’t like being a pinball in all those trees, so we fished where we could. Crappies are still a bit off. When did the gills get so spooky. Now all the fish have been educated. I remember the good old days when you could drop a worm on the head of a bass with a big sinker and he’d eat it. Not now.
