Not a lot of activity on here but thought I’d update ice conditions back on January 8th 2022 for Boom. I was able to go to my buddies cabin again this year and hopefully one more time in March (we will see). Measured anywhere from 10.5″-13.5″ of ice.

I drove out with my 1/2 ton and checked every 100 yards or so the ice thickness. Didnt have any ice concerns until we got to where we were fishing on the NW part of the main lake by the fish cribs which is where we found the 10.5″. We managed a few fish but nothing to crazy for us. Got off the lake safely.

    Good luck all!

I know I’m late to the party here, but another benefit of the Lite Flight is its ability for Overlapping Holes. I’ve used my lite flight for “MickyMouse” holes for sturgeon on the St Croix. The 3rd hole the auger does kick out every once in awhile at the bottom, but I think thats more my fault than the auger.

Take a look at the Savage 220’s if you dont do the Browning BPS. It can shoot very accurately out to 150 yards with the Remington Accutip Slugs. The slugs have been hard to find but the Remington Factory is producing them, just expect to pay $20 a box right now. The shotgun is a bolt action, so it has a bit more kick then a semi auto, but it could be a reliable shotgun for years for him and they make left handed versions.

I have mine paired with a Vortex Diamondback 3x9x40 scope.

Yeah the ice is definitely going quick. The rain today will make that ice disappear even faster.

Shorelines have been gone on most places. Saw a car on Medicine Lake Monday evening that launched from the East Park Beach, but that ice did not look good at all.

Has anyone had luck ice fishing Pelican? I’ll be up there this coming week. Will kind of be limited in the length of time to fish but will have the afternoon/evening timeframe for sure!

Been trying to do some research and it pretty much seems like weed lines and primetime hours, maybe a few rocks or points for the walleye. Taking the GF ice fishing for the 1st time too so I am hoping some panfish are suspended over a basin for some action at least! I keep seeing Jones bay as a good starting point.

Any pointers will be great. Would love to get my hands on Shiners but as you all know its tough to get right now with the demand and the limited trapping options for bait stores!

Fishing was tough with the high pressure system. Managed to find a few gills is all, but there was plenty of ice. Did not see a lot of other fish being caught around us too. Sorry I dont have anything else to report on.

    Thanks for the replies!

Much appreciated. I have looked at that lake link as well but was hoping to sneak in here and see if there was someone willing to share.

The High Pressure system moving through this weekend won’t help things but it will be fun to fish a few Cribs since I can’t here in MN.

My home neck of the woods! Unfortunately not able to fish it much living in the cities now, but Pools 8 and 9 can be some of the best fishing in the country. Over 120 species of fish in these pools!

BTW, My deer hunting area is just across from where you fished on the MN side. Pretty good deer hunting area for Trophys and meat!

Fished out on Nokomis Sunday afternoon into dark on the south end of the lake in the deeper hole. Tons of fish on the graph but managed only 15 or so 6-8″ Crappie. Caught on plastics jigging. not much happening with Minnows that day and once dark hit the fish were not active. Easily 12″ of ice there. Got to play with the new Lite Flight auger too which is pretty slick.

This weekend I’m hitting up the trout opener in the morning and then joining a buddy on Tonka in Browns Bay to watch some football and talk stupid. Have seen some walleye caught in this area with pictures. Assuming a deadstick with a red hook & shiner? or can a guy get a bite or two jigging for them?

Mr Beads – Hardy’s is a great place for bait, as with Big B’s near Bass Lake. I’ll be getting bait from both places this winter, once the ice gets a bit back in better shape after this wind and warm weather stretch.

Ice – I found 6″ out on Turtle Lake in Shoreview Sunday afternoon, and it was all locked up. I did not venture all across the lake but saw a few walk out to the very middle. One guy had his Golf Cart out and a small skid house. 1st time ever there for me, looks like a good lake.

The most recent fisheries survey in July 2017 indicated that 23% of the <em class=”ido-tag-em”>pike in that lake were 28+ inches and the largest one sampled was 37.5 inches.

The biggest one I’ve run into is 35.5 inches.

Considering how many of our lakes are loaded with stunted pike, these numbers are actually pretty good, especially for a metro lake.

Yeah I just read that fisheries study too!

Any particular spots better than others for tip up fishing Medicine? Assuming Weedlines but all I have really targeted is Bluegills there with quite a bit of success actually.

You’d think living 5 minutes away from it I’d put the boat in it during the summer, but never have!

Medicine Lake in Plymouth has 4-5.5″ out from the East Medicine Lake Park. Crystal clear ice, and it holds a fall from a 200 lb guy who slipped even with cleats on :-).

However, there is open water in the middle of the lake, so Do not venture in the dark.

I fished from the outside weededge (11/12Ft) out to the 35 ft hole on the south end, and didnt mark much.

Saw a half dozen shacks on Eagle Lake in Maple Grove/Brooklyn Center but I did not venture out.

We managed to get this 51″ out in Crystal Bay along the weed edge. Only fish/action for 8 hours of fishing but worth it. Sucker was down about 7 ft and going .6-.8 mph!

Has anyone heard any updates on this legislation? I’ve been trying to look it up but with no luck. I know other priorities have popped up but just curious if anything has been proposed or not. Depending on what the legislature says will determine if I buy a rifle or shotgun this year. It be nice to get both but can only do one this year likely.

    Thanks!

I wonder if Garmin is coming out with a trolling motor with livescope in it. All they have today is the Gforce, but wonder if they are going to try doing spotlock to compete with Minnkota…

Ended up fishing from midnight to 10pm Saturday with 2 seperate one hour breaks. We caught 30 trolling the north shore. My first fish was a 26″ at 12:45am, then 121 fish later I finished with a 26.5″ slip bobbering the sand. We caught all sizes from 13″ to 28″. We tried casting for pike for a couple hours in there also but they must have moved out already. My best opener experience ever!

Spot lock is amazing!!! Until you get your line stuck in the prop catching a fish…ooooops. Only happened one time to me…

I would at least have an anchor in the boat. I think it might even be a requirement in MN? Not 100% sure on that though.

I have had luck Saturday evenings starting around 4pm at the Greys Bay Launch when we go muskie fishing. You might have to wait in line for a few minutes to launch, but you might get some good laughs out of it as well.

For other Metro Lakes, pretty much any of the lakes in the Southwest Metro are solid. They will have a ton of pressure by the end of the summer, but you can catch decent sized fish on some of them, especially bass. A few are Electric only. But if you have a good trolling motor you can get around those lakes easily and sometimes get on some great fishing.

There are a few lakes in the Lakeville area as well that have a decent launch and parking. Medicine Lake in Plymouth I dont know much about.

Thanks for sharing! Any thoughts on what the muskie will be up to Memorial weekend? Sounds like they might be spawning now?

This photo was taken today on Leech, not sure on what part of the Lake. We are still planning on going there for Opener! It’s going to be close but should be enough open water!

Head to the river portion that’s open if you can. Landings are very busy so expect to wait…but it’s worth it. Water temp hit 40 degrees today.

I am sure there are big walleye staging to make their way up river yet as well

Anybody Targeting Sturgeon yet? We have a big group coming up next week (11 guys) for what will be my 3rd year in a row. A little walleye fishing as well!

Looks like the weather is going to warm up a bit as well

Thank You Dutchboy. I will give them a call!

If you want to call it a boat, as my friends would say. But, yes it is on the boat.

The boat is an 18′ Tuffy Rampage, old fiberglass Single Console boat with a 51″ beam!
