What’s worked for me on our lake (very clear, 17′ – 33′ Secchi) for the sunrise/sunset bite is to find the weed line, which is roughly 20 FOW, and go out about 10′ – 30′ beyond, depending on depth change. Large chrome Swedish pimple tipped with a head & pounding the bottom has worked well. Shiner on the tip-up 3″- 10″ from bottom/bare hook. A camera would be very helpful as well. They can be extremely finicky in clear water & I’ve found that interested Eyes quite often prefer their meal lying on flat the bottom “twitching”. Once it’s dark, I move into the heavy weeds in 5′ FOW. Fatheads on both bobber & tip-up. Caught many nice Eyes, all female’s & 24″+ between 9pm – 2am this way. I don’t bother fishing fishing for Eyes during the day anymore, if the sun is out, but have caught a couple on tip-ups while going for Pike in deep water. Good luck.

There will always be climate change. There has always been climate change. If there’s one thing that certain from our measly 200 or so years of data, it’s that the earth’s climate in not constant and will always change. What makes people so certain man is creating it? I remember a photo my late Grandfather showed me back in 1981, when he was (aprx) 92. It was a picture of him (and his brother)taking the laundry off the clothes line and putting it into baskets. There was a huge plume of black smoke coming from a neighbors house in the background. I asked him if the house was on fire. He chuckled and said “no, that’s why we were taking the clothes in” “The Robins started heating their house that day”. I asked him what that had to do with the thick black smoke. “That’s from the coal”. “You should have seen it around here in the heating season”. “You could barely breath because of all the smoke & soot in the air” “Everyone house in the city burned coal or wood for heat & if you left your clothes out on the line, they’d turn black and you’d have to wash them again”…. I suppose if man was capable of releasing enough pollution to destroy the earth, it would have been during that era.

If we get rid of the penny, how will the politicians approach those “minor” tax increases? I’d rather pay $3.51 for a gallon of gas vs. $3.55. We have so many taxes we don’t even think twice about which are in – and increased in denominations of a penny: sales tax, numerous items on your phone, electric, solid waste, natural gas/propane bills etc. It’s much easier to swallow a penny increase than it is a nickel.

I was up in the Pine River/Backus area last weekend and the Crappie were still spawning. Water surface temp was 64*-65*? They’re a good month behind. Caught a hog Walleye (PB @ 29.5″)
and she was fat with eggs too. Very strange year. Saw many schools of Bass as well in the shallows and they seemed to be in pre-spawn mode.

SHORT CUT: If you want to avoid going through Pine River, after passing Jenkins by a mile or two, look for the bridge over the Pine River. Once you see it, slow down quickly and turn on CR 44 which will become 84 in a mile or so and save you a couple of miles. It’s only on the right side of 371

I’ve got a place just off 84 ten miles S. of Longville. To say 84 is curvy is an understatement. The road itself is in great condition & beautiful scenery – but OBEY THE SPEED LIMIT SIGNS. Many 90’turns, specially by Ada lake – 6 within a mile or two of Ada. I have seen many people, including motorcycles, wreck on that road due to speed. Also keep an eye out for deer. Saw 13 near the road by Wheeler Marine Saturday.

Credit union without a doubt. I use a “big bank” for my business accounts & a credit union for personal accounts. It’s apples to oranges. Everything is better and easier at the credit union. With the CU interest rates are always lower, loans are easier to get, penalties/fees are lower, service is faster, when you call you talk to an actual person without having to go through the whole “Press 1 for English” BS – they even call me if any questionable transactions are occurring on my VISA. Credit unions all the way.

I’m as annoyed as anyone by white knuckle drivers, but I also realize that they are probably just as annoyed by my driving habits as I am by theirs. I usually drive as though I’m the only one paying for the roads. I’m usually that idiot 3 feet off you’re back bumper on 94, my face bright red because you’re only going 72mph in the fast lane & I’ve got fish to catch. But I pray that when my kids begin driving, they will join the ranks of the white knuckle drivers I tend to get so worked up about. I pray that they will drive at a speed that they are comfortable with in these conditions. My mother didn’t start driving until she was 42. She’s still a white knuckle driver. She does not have the confidence, experience or knowledge to handle a vehicle like most of us do under these conditions. As irritating as it is, I am glad that these white knucklers are doing the responsible thing and driving at their comfort level – not trying to keep up with my demands of how a person should drive.

Are you talking about East & West near Henning? If so, I used to fish East quite a bit. A friend has a place on East. Really good for Walleye, Crappie & Pike. For Eyes, fish straight out from the channel (on east) between the lakes. Be careful in that area, ice conditions can be unpredictable due to the current there. Larger jigs tipped with a head & tip up with a medium shiner. Good luck.

The Crappie were right on the floor & at least 2″ above. We didn’t have a flasher but did have the camera going and they came through and literally hit every (4) line we had in the water, over & over, which were all within 2″ of the bottom. The Walleye would not hit unless the minnow & jig were lying on the bottom with the minnow twitching. A bizarre evening indeed.

Got in line @ 7:10. Was out by 7:35. Not as long of a wait as I expected considering the line. We were @ the Nokomis station & were #378 & #379.

That sucks! When you replace/purchase another boat, look into a gps chip (like those for pets), you’ll know exactly where your stuff is and can retrieve it with a few buddies – or with the law.

    no more inspections then!

Unfortunately, it will probably mean more inspections on that lake, trying to keep them from leaving/spreading.

I think one key to success while battling Charlie(or any other weed) is to apply treatment immediately after mowing while the cut or “wound” is still open, allowing the chemical to penetrate quicker & more directly.

I just talked with Dave Monday. He’s been out,(trying to get me out as well) but has had some issues with his motor the last week or so. Look hard & you’ll see him – and his kids if it’s the weekend.

One thing you may want to consider if buying beef is do you want a corn fed/ feed fed cow or grass fed cow. We prefer the grass fed. They seem to be marbled better & very tender. On the other hand, my brother prefers the corn fed beef? Can’t lose either way price wise.

X2 DFresh. Replaced the lower intake 3 times in 11 years on the wifes Montana. They did come out with a new metal/rubber gasket a few years ago which they claim will last much longer -time will tell.

I’ve had better luck with my Mariner than with my Merc – but there’s an 8 year difference in age, with the Mariner being a 96′ & the Merc an 88′

Simple but tasty. Can modify spices to your taste.

Soak fillets in flat beer for at least 15 minutes
Mix a ratio of 5/1 flour over baking powder
Add garlic salt & lemon pepper
Dip in egg then in batter powder
    Fry @ 350 until crisp/brown

Batter is similar to “Tempura” batter & works great for onion rings & cheese curds as well.

*Make sure your Lemon Pepper is fresh

I guess we’re blessed, We love our neighbors. Did have a run in at our old house though. I was installing a privacy fence, following city code to a tee, and my neighbor comes out screaming & hollering, cursing & cussing about it being on his property. We didn’t talk for a week. Eventually I had my brother in-law, who is a surveyor, confirm my property lines Turns out the garden shed he put up the previous year was on my property by 9 inches, as were the 10 Lilac bushes he put in around the same time I must admit it was a pleasure to call him with the good news & thank him for the beautiful Lilacs

I use an old 20 gallon aquarium with pump/filter system. Keeps minnows alive for months. You could probably find one for free on CL.
