Its definitely good news but we do have a long ways to go on the habitat side of things.

There has been a lot of interest in CRP this year due to the drop in commodity prices, especially in the northern counties. Next year may have even more interest. Only problem is that the new farm bill significantly caps the National acres allowed to be enrolled. So we’ll have the interest but no acres available.

    Thanks Grouse,

I am also very interested to see how these hold up after the understory withers away. We tried to design the mix to be about 70% Warm Season Grasses/Sunflowers and 30% broadleaves/browse.

The other idea we’d like to try is to plant some corn rows to act as a snow catch for these food plots to ensure the food is available to the birds.

The brood rearing potential in these plots are phenomenal. The sunflowers and buckwheat provide great overhead cover while the understory remains open for young chicks to forage on insects. I would argue that brood rearing food/habitat is just as critical as winter food sources especially if your in an area that see’s cold wet springs. Gotta produce birds before you can worry about wintering them!

4-5 Inches of ice on the couple sloughs we hit today. Not much action though. 3 walleye under 12 and an 11 inch perch. Cant complain though, was real nice to get out. Weather conditions do not look good until next weekend however, well see how our ice holds up until then.

Last I heard Waubay had a strong perch bite going into freeze up, didnt get much pressure during last years ice and this summer. Bitter should also be another solid producer this year. All we need is a couple cold weeks in december to get them sealed up with good ice.
