Do you guys run into a lot of pike biting those ifish pros off with the bigger sucker minnows on them? Heading up this weekend and wondered if leaders on my tip ups would be necessary (would prefer not to use them obviously).

Kind of just a feel type thing. If I feel like I am in the right area and they will turn on I will wait it out, especially if I’m marking a few fish. If I get the feeling that I’m wasting time or I don’t mark a fish within 5-10 minutes, I move, maybe not far. If I don’t catch fish anywhere, I go home! I tend to drill as I go, 2-3 holes as to not expend to much energy if I’m not positive that I’m over fish and then when I do, I drill more to expand.

Eh… negative temps are negative temps. It’ll still make ice with snow on it, just not as much. I’d be more worried about the predicted foot next weekend… that will make it slushy and horrible.

I bet I caught 300 bluegills this weekend, trouble was, I only kept 9 between the 2 days (Which is all I really wanted, but even had I wanted to keep more I wouldn’t have been able to). Just fished where I knew it was safe and had a lot of fun shaking the rust off out there on the ice. Nice little deep freeze coming giving us more options for the weekend to come!

“If fishing regulations differ between the border states, what regulations do I follow?
You must obey the regulations of the state in which you are fishing. More permissive regulations are limited
to that state’s waters. Using number of lines as an example: In Wisconsin waters anglers may use 3 lines,
but in Minnesota waters anglers only may use 2 lines.”

Taken directly from Page 44 of the MINNESOTA fishing regulations. Problem solved.

If you are a MN resident with a MN license you HAVE to follow MN regulations.
    WISCONSIN–MINNESOTA Regulations:

Two lines with a single lure or bait on each are permitted. If fishing with one line, you may use
    two baits.

Took that from the reg book.
If you buy a WI license you can use 3.
    Check the books!!

WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. Follow the laws of the state you are in. MN side of the river, 2 lines. WI side, 3. On a border water the license you have does not determine what laws you follow, it just allows you to fish both sides without having to buy a NR license for the other state.

You’ll be on ice around here by next Thursday…. not so sure about Mille Lacs or LOTW though….

Just follow the regulations for the state that you are in and you will be fine.

People should be thankful they ever came back to MN after the “no-cull rule” on the MN side of the river debacle that DQ’d Brandon Palaniuk a few years back after he was smoking everyone in the tournament on the river. Inconsistent rules from the MNDNR and an archaic rule when it comes to tournament bass fishing. We’ll see how this one goes…. guessing not well.

Let me guess? Predation from smallmouth and bigger walleyes? The indians netting? It certainly has nothing to do with Charters taking limit after limit from the lake.

When was the last time charters took limit after limit? Better yet, when was the last time you fished Mille Lacs?
The politics of the lake are much deeper then C&R can ever hope to fix.

I fished it in February and caught a ton of fish, none of which were in the slot. Give them a year or two to grow and it will be in good shape.

I urge you to look around the web for all of the pictures of limits of walleyes nailed to boards from throughout the years. And then last year it turned into the smallies after the closure. This is as big of problem as tribal netting. It takes everyone accepting a bit of the blame to turn things around.

All I’m saying is C&R now is better than having 0 fish in the future…. deal with and fish elsewhere for the time being if you want to keep walleyes.

It’s also hard for the bait shops to sell bait when there are no fish in the lake to catch on the bait. In my opinion there a lot of people who are being very short sighted when it comes to the lake. A few years of financial hardship may just lead to better conservation policies for the resort owners with guided trips, the recreational anglers, and all of the bobber anglers who more than did their part in depleting the population by taking their limit day in and day out. In the long term, this is what is needed to get the lake back to where it once was in my opinion. Pointing the finger does nothing to fix the problem. Time to nut up, own your mistakes, and move on.

BASS will move the tournament elsewhere. No way will they have their AOY tournament on a body of water that you can only keep 4 fish and no big ones.

Towards the end of the DNR statement it says “The ability to exempt large bass tournaments from the size regulation and bag limits remains.”

I did not see that. That would be the only way they stay! Good to hear.

Say what you want about the DNR ruining the lake, but Politicians have ruined about everything else. Far too much rhetoric in these bills and absolutely ZERO biology or science.

I hope Mille Lacs can turn it around and soon. Might be a couple more years before its more like it was 5 or 6 years ago.

So with that Smallie slot, how does that play into the Bassmasters tourney coming there? They have to follow local rules right? I was hoping to see some really big bags during the tourney, but maybe not.

Saw a hole today with about 40 ciggy-butts around it… disgusting. Worst part is, I’m not picking those up because got knows who’s mouth they’ve been in, I can only imagine if they are stupid enough to leave them there that they are too stupid to clean their nasty mouth.

I think the idea is to portray the up close beauty of a fish while also getting yourself in the picture. I have no issue with it and I do it all of the time. I think it makes for a better picture. But that’s just me.

Other than being able to cut through dirty ice without dulling blades, what are the advantages for the chipper blades?

I’d order a 115 EFI from them if I wanted to donate $3779 to an Indonesian scam artist.

Lithium will be much lighter, and hold a charge longer. There is no slow discharge (flickering, dimming, loss of sensitivity) with lithium batteries, when they die, they just shut off, hence why they “last longer”. That being said, if you don’t mind the weight, $20 for a new lead battery would work just fine. I recently replaced mine and I have no issues fishing 8-10 hours on one charge. I recharge every night I get home though. Additionally, you have to pay extra for a special charger… There are benefits, but in my opinion, for a flasher, I don’t see enough upside to justify the price tag.

I have a pair of some sort of Ice Armor gloves that I got a year or so ago and have no complaints, I use them for extreme cold ice fishing and they have worked great and also I used them late season duck hunting with no complaints. Still look new. (They do not smell new though between fish and mud…)

Lazer bit should work fine to reopen holes… at least it has in my experience.
