In Iowa during Shotgun seasons, it is legal to fill another persons tag, but they have to be in your group. So I couldn’t really take some guys tag and fill it if he wasn’t also out there with us.

Bow season, muzzle loader, I don’t think it is allowed at all. Tag can only be used on a deer that the person whose tag it is shoots.

Taught the boy to shoot. NOW I got to teach him a little humility.

Actually couldn’t be prouder. When he settles down and “gets in the zone” the kid’s a better shot than I am most days.

They are making vests now that have special pockets for those sports bottle type things.

Here is what I do. First I have one of those big laundry detergent things, you know a 96 load jug with the spigot thing on it. That gets rinsed, and rinsed, and rinsed, and then just for good measure, rinsed a few more times to get all the soap out. Holds over 2 gallons of water – that goes in the Jeep.

I have a web belt and load bearing harness and canteens (GI type). I carry at least one canteen for the dog – it’s got the gas mask fitting. Cut the tube off an old mask and carry that in my pocket. When we stop, plug the tube in and water the dog. Tube comes in handy for flushing out his eyes too.

If need be I put another canteen for me on the other side. Put all this on under my vest. Works fine and was REAL cheap.

    Ryan;

Haven’t put a 3 1/2 in it, YET! 2 3/4 slug had him going WOW! so Dad is going to get the 3 1/2 for him soon. He’s got to know….. Found a few little quirks with the weapon but over all a good gun. He really likes it, now. At first he couldn’t hit anything. He was looking up to see what happened – had to smack him on the head (not really). Once he settled down, took his time, thought about what he was doing, he was deadly once more.

Tucker is working out pretty good. I just have to remember it’s his first real season. Would like to get a nice longer retrieve for him though. That one that ran on Alex, Tucker beat Alex to it (like the boy was going to catch it! LOL) – ended up being about a 10 foot retrieve. He is not crunching them and isn’t giving us too much trouble giving them up. As you could see from the pic, he left the birds alone for that. Couldn’t have done that last year.

Let Alex play hooky the other day so we could try for a few birds. Morning was pretty good. The boy outgunned me two to one. He is getting used to that new Bennelli. Tried another place after lunch and couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. Tucker gave me a perfect point, I flushed the bird, and then proceed to miss – TWICE! Oh well, the morning was good.

I wouldn’t consider Eskimo an “OFF BRAND” at all. I have one (Sportsman) that is well over a dozen years old and still runs like a charm. ARDISAM is a major maunfacturer of outdoor equipment especially contruction and excavating stuff. ESKIMO is the brand they put on stuff they make for icefishing. It has those “Serrated” chipper type blades. They don’t cut as fast as these new lazer things but they last forever, even when I go to ponds and end up cutting through small timber of submerged trees. Cuts a clean hole too. Replaced the blades once since I got it, buddy “borrowed” it and dig a couple dozen post holes without using an earth auger, touch ’em up at the beginning of the season and I am good to go.

I have to work nights Wed, Thur, Fri and Sat. So I probably won’t be out opening weekend at all. Actually doesn’t bother me too much. Could be a lot of corn still standing. Didn’t have any luck taking a couple boys out for the youth opener because the birds all stayed in the corn.

The last couple of years I have hated opening weekend. Too many “one timers” out there. Getting pelted by #6s from 80 yards away, untrained dogs, rude “hunters”, and trespassers on your private lands just irritated the crap out of me. I’ll go in the middle of the week.

I have an ancient Eskimo Sportsman 8 inch. Runs fine. Probably cuts a bit slower than these newer augers but even though I drool over ’em I can’t pry the $$ out of the wallet when this one still works.

Have to work opening day, but have4 days off after that. We will be hitting some small private grounds those days. I tend to stay out of the larger public areas opening weekend – too many “Once a Year” folks often with untrained dogs roaming around. Getting pelted with bird shot and having unruly dogs pester you really ruins the day for me!

Had Tucker out for exercise, got the boy a new shotgun, got mine all cleaned up again and ready to go. Water jug and bottles ready. Need to check and restock the First Aid kit though.

    Ryan,

So your Tucker is a “Fishin’ Dog” too? I can’t take my Tuckwer fishing. He jumps in the water and tangles your lines. That’d be all I need – him getting a hook in hisself. If you catch one he wants to eat it. Goes nuts like you got a fluttering quail on the end of your line!

Steve, that is a Munsterlander alright. Full of urine and vinager most of the time. Although, I kind of screwed him on his NAVHDA Natural ability Test last weekend. Should have gone down the night before instead of taking off at 3:00 am. Got him off his feed and he kind of pooped out a little 3/4 of the way through the search. That and he was marking territory too much. Other than that he got top scores in every other catagory. 107 Prize II.

These are pics of my Tucker. Not to be confused with Ryan Hales’ Tucker – met that dog. Mine is a Small Munsterlander, just over a year old so this will be his 1st real year out this coming season.

    Sniffing around:
