You’re heading to a great area and you’re duck and pheasant hunting in South Dakota, life is going to be good no matter what!

For more information…..What are your dates and what is your goal? (ducks, geese, greenheads, divers…..ponds, fields?) Success will vary greatly depending on effort and expectations.

We’ll be out there Oct. 26 through Nov. 1. We have some private fields and water to hunt. It has always just been a pheasant trip, but with my recent foot/ankle surgery, an aging dog, and pheasant numbers down, I thought I’d try to get into waterfowling. I haven’t field hunted ducks before. I live on the Mississippi now and grew up in lake country in NW WI. I’d love to harvest a mixed bag. We camp right on the river, but it typically doesn’t hold the ducks that the sleughs and ponds do. I’m excited to give it a go.

Great News! It sounds like I might be spending more time waterfowling than pheasant hunting. The annual report isn’t too promising.

I would keep him on a long check cord, used in conjunction with the e-collar until he understands the basic commands. Come, sit, stay are basic commands he should have mastered on a check cord before he is ever shocked with the e-collar. Your jumping problem can be cured the same way but with a short leash. Practice with family or neighbors coming to the door, the short leash willl allow you teach him the expectations, then you can introduce the e-collar to finish the lesson.

I agree 100%. I didn’t start using an ecollar for a few years.

Digging them out is too tough. Takes a while…stick with it.

I’ve owned the Nova and now the SuperNova. I’ve never had that happen.

That sounds amazing. I hope all this rain helps things out a bit.

I, too, have used night training to gain nose strength. It works.

I dont mean to offend anyone by this but, if you need to give away birds to be able to go out and shoot anthor limit, maybe you should take a few days off of hunting and eat some.
I see it all the time with fishing people go out and hammer the fish and then keep giving away fish so they can keep going out and catching their limit. Gotta take care of the resource, if everyone keeps taking everything they can, wont be much left for future generations.

No offense taken. In fact, I thought about this before my post. It becomes an issue for me, personally, because I am not able to hunt more than 6-8 times a season. But, I always try to spend a 3-4 day weekend up North hunting and during that time, I like to hunt hard. Many times it’s by myself. It becomes difficult to eat that much and still come home with a possession limit for the rest of the fall.

In WI, it’s a process to give meat away. Do food banks take game besides deer?

Good question. It also becomes hard to eat enough goose and duck to not be over the limit. What do guys do with all of the meat?

COps are power hungry [censored] bottom line one of my best friends turned in to a cop after high school. And now biggest dick u ever met. Another guy I know same thing coolest guy ever now a cop to good for everbody. Must be a suck life. The only cool cop I met was the one we had in are highschool. After he seen that permit he should have tucked tail a got off the property.

I wonder if there is a difference between states, cities, etc. I’ve worked with lots of officers in WI in schools, universities, foundations, chili cook-offs, etc. I must just find the nice ones.

Did he come across like a dick? Was he throwing his weight around? I don’t see the problem. Doesn’t seem like a huge inconvenience to me. But, I don’t feel jaded towards officers. Now, if he came back and did it again, I’d have a complaint. I figure if I have nothing to hide, ask all the questions you want. Hopefully, the next time I get pulled over for speeding, its the same guy. Maybe he’d let me off…

I’d have no problem doing what the officer asked. I would be glad that he was using due diligence to keep my neighborhood safe. He has no idea what anyone’s intent is. I believe he acted in a lawful and prudent way. I could ask my brother…he’s a cop.

I live in LaCrosse, and I went North for opener. I don’t like the pressure and the skybusting that I see down here. I managed a limit Saturday. Lots of woodies and a few teal. Only saw three flocks of mallards. Lots of geese coming down. I did have another hunter on the same water, but he was a few hundred yards away and was selective about his shots. A very relaxing weekend. Plucked a woodie and roasted on the fire for lunch. Went grouse hunting in the afternoon. Got into a few. Only shot at one. I ate that one for supper.

I was just suprised to hear someone say the 870 had “too many pieces”, they are about as simple and dependable as you can get when it comes to shotguns that is why they haven’t changed much in 30+ years.
The 870 is kinda like the model 94 Winchester rifle they hit it out of the park the first time so why mess with a good thing.

I don’t know much about Novas, my only experience was with 1 hunting buddy who couldn’t wait to get rid of it….but that was 1 persons opinion and experience.

No prob. I hear ya. I was just being fiesty. Must be the weather. I think, either way, he’ll be fine at that price point.

If I count the 3 chokes and the recoil pad, I can have 9 pieces.

I have the Nova in both 12 and 20 gauge. I love them. They are hands down the easiest guns I’ve ever cleaned. I use the 20 for grouse and pheasant (when they are holding tight). The 12 I use for everything waterfowl and turkeys as well as pheasant. I like the one piece stock and receiver. The fit and finish is quality Benelli. I also like the add-on recoil reducer that fits into the stock. This comes in handy when pluggin geese with Mag loads. I’ve had the 12 through some seriously nasty weather. No rust and no failure. The factory tru-glo front sight is a nice touch.

I really enjoy carrying my springfield 30-30. It is a carbine and in bolt action. Has a clip. I shot three deer with it this fall and two fell in their tracks the other went 20 yds. A true brush gun for me requires open sites, and needs to be light wt. All three deer this season were shot at a combined total of 65 yds. Just my $.02.

I am up there nearly every weekend and I live to drive around. No doubt less deer.

It is a fun area to explore. I got to do that while growing up near Siren. We have a cabin North of Minong. That’s where my parents live now fulltime. I like to go up there and spend time with most of my uncles and friends. They report a decent deer herd this year. Perhaps not like it was in the early ’90’s, but nice nonetheless.

I wonder if the numbers are down in the Washburn/Douglas/Burnett counties because there are less deer or people are just choosing not to shoot as many deer? I was lucky to see more deer than recent years in that area this last season and also while grouse/duck hunting. I talked to many people in that area that are choosing to not fill their tags. I chose to this year. But, for the last three years, I didn’t shoot a deer in that area.
