I had that exact same issue. Turns out it was a ground issue.

Grant used to be pro staff here and was featured on several IDO episodes. Some major falling out between him and James. Grant is a good guy.
I haven’t read the whole article, just little tidbits so far. Redfins are common in the apostles and up by Isle Royale. They can get very big. Siscowets are common all over the lake however are terrible table fare. There’s another variety that is somewhat similar in profile to the Redfin but has some really large pectoral fins. I always think they look like a toad. At least the colors remind me of that. I always catch these tight to the bottom and are normally pretty aggressive. Then there is the lean <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>lake trout that I believe is a strain from Great Slave or Great Bear lake. Or maybe somewhere else in Canada. I think they were used in the 50s, 60s and 70s to restock the lake after the massive <em class=”ido-tag-em”>lake trout crash.
Always wondered what happened between them two! I figured some kind of argument went down and they split.
I only run 91 ethanol free is everything I own expect my truck. Never have a carb issue. I have a friend that runs a small engine shop on the side. He could make a living cleaning dirty carbs so some people can still use crappy fuel to keep him open. Lol
Cove, Isle, Wahkon, and Vineland bays all had pretty good weed growth when I fished them for muskies and pike. Probably wouldn’t be great for trolling though, some areas were pretty thick.
Yeah I did notice that on the northern areas too. Like sparse stuff then it gets really thick in spots. Makes it hard to troll in that stuff.
Good luck! I spent a fair bit of time out there over the winter to only ice a few nice eaters. Was out there right away opening morning a few weeks ago to find no other boats and no fish in the boat. The clear water and fishing pressure has sure made that lake a lot more difficult than it use to be. You could troll the shallows after dark and catch all the fish you wanted years ago.
I bought a 4hp Suzuki ( brand new from dealer) last late spring. I used it most of the summer and got sick of having to use the internal tank and needed a bit more power so traded it for a 6hp. I love it! It does everything I need it to do. It’s a little louder than a twin but it’s nothing major. I can run on about a half a 3 gallon external tank running all day on a weekend trip. Depending on how you look at it it’ll pay for it self in saved fuel in just a few years! On a 16.5ft Alumacraft

Went out today out of TH (solo) went 15/18 all lakers. 15 landed in about 4-5 hours after I found them. Riggers down 68 and 85ft pink was by far the best. Biggest about 7-8lbs. Awesome day of fishing with great weather! Sounds like a wrap on the season with 4-6’ seas next 2 days.Great day! The entire weekend looks like a good one to watch football unfortunately.
I’ll be looking back to the north shore once water temps fall back into the 30s in December. Hopefully the winds don’t blow like they did last winter.
Exactly! Not a great looking weekend unfortunately wind wise!

Will do. I chose tomorrow for that very reason.
Where were you planning to go out of?
How did you end up doing today out of TH?
Yes I wait a bit of time (half hour) before checking it. It’s never been below the add mark. Just maybe from full to 1/4 on the safe zone. Heard that when the rings aren’t fully seated using oil like this is normal.
Thank you! Sounds like an effective tactic at this time with all the forage. What size jigs do you like to use?
Bobber and a leech for the eyes on the mud. Don’t think you were shallow or deep enough plenty of weeds from garrison public access north.
There are no pencil reeds on actual garrison reef.
Your talking just old school plain hook and a leech thrown out on pods of fish?
Also can anyone give any good recommendation of cranks for pulling on lead or deep diving cranks? Shad/cranks or stick baits?
That’s correct there is no pencil reeds. But on the east side on the break on the reef there is a pencil weed type ( what ever the name is) it’s a submerged weed. As far as shallow or deep went from 5fow out. Don’t get me wrong theres some sparse crappy slop on bottom but that’s about it. No standing cabbage or stuff that I would call ideal.
I checked St. Albans, wigwam, and shabushkung bays then up to myr mar along the north end.
I did find some weeds around garrison reef but it wasn’t much more than thin pencil weeds. Any one know where the weeds went?? Fished the mud flats for a while pulling lead core and man there’s not shortage of fish the lake. Bait and fish stacked up galore. But no life could get a single ones to bite. Talking to the AIS lady at the landing she said she only heard of 1 walleye being caught all day.
Ran over this morning and for the life of me can’t find any weeds at all. Checked bays on west side half and of the north end. Some sparse stuff on bottom and that’s it. Just flat.
Forgive my lack of knowledge haha….. I’ve only ever ice fished the pond so I’m clueless. But is there a weed line around the whole lake like your typical lake (6-15fow?) I’ve heard the north end has good weeds but what about the west or south sides? I’d imagine there would be fish on rock also?
Ended up picking up that unit last week and got it out over the weekend. Just under 60lbs it didn’t affect the boat at all. Never know it’s even there. Have little over 3 hours on it now wanted to at least get it partially broke in. So far couldn’t be happier gets down to less than 1mph and top speed of around 5mph. In those 3 hours it ran (broke in per the manual) it burned about 1/3 of a gallon. I was gonna get the external tank setup but they claim 45 min of run time at WOT. Which at trolling speed which is around 1/4 throttle you could easily get a couple hours of run time. So far couldn’t be happier with the purchase. Only thing with this one is it does take a small oil filter which no other smaller outboards take.
Looking at a 4hp either a merc or Suzuki both are available locally. Suzuki seems built a little bit better and has over all better reviews so kinda leaning that way. Anyone have a rough guess what a 4hp would push a 16.5ft Alumacraft single console, 1 guy? Was hoping to get 3mph top speed but maybe that’s unrealistic?
Buying new is a good idea. The only problem with that is trying to find something that is in stock which is not easy.
That merc would be about 77lbs and the Yamaha would be 83lbs. From my research even smaller and newer four strokes would be in that 40-60lb range. I would need to run a external fuel tank also like stevenoak said as I run premix now for the 75hp. I did do some looking on marketplace and Craigslist and there is not much within 75 miles of me.
Anyone been up 169 after the last few inches of snow? Was the garrison landing parking lot plowed?
Perfect thanks! I just need a plowed area to park the access can be unplowed.
21-23fow in morning was non consistent so pushed out deeper on the edge of a flat in that 26-28fow range and that seemed to be the ticket. Gold was by far the best pink or orange was no go. Smallest pike suckers on the dead sticks were best.
I was curious when I first started using this setup last fall. So here’s some numbers of configurations I can come up with to show how light these rigs can be:
– Strikemaster chipper lite, 8 1/4” chipper bit- 24lbs
-Clam plate with 6” lazer hand auger bit, 16” extension, dewalt dcd 791 and 5ah battery 11.5 lbs
– Same set up as above only with an 8” lazer hand auger 16lbs.
-7.5” k drill and dcd 996, 5ah battery 10.5 lbs
7.5” k drill, clam plate, k drill to plate adapter, dcd 996 and 5ah battery 15.5 lbs.
Thanks guys! Sounds like I’m better off leaving it at home. I’ve got a few crystal clear lakes in mind to try it on. But first we need cold temps as there larger deeper lakes!
Pulled the trigger on a 7.5” k drill after talking to many different people about both units. Came across a stellar deal on the k drill and count pass it up. Put the 996 on it and seems like it should work well! I did order an adapter for the k drill to work with my clam plate. What’s everyone’s option on running the drill on the plate vs with the handle? Obviously the plate with add a little weight but will also had a better grip when drilling. I wanna try both but wanted to get opinions first.
Brother and I are thinking of running up next week to give er a try. Picked up a new marcum camera and been itching to try it. How’s the clarity is that something that would be fun to use or is it better off left at home? I’ve never fished red before so sorry about the newbie question.
