The river is pure slush this morning. We won’t be fishing today but the looks of it.
Let’s see that interior setup! I have a 5 sided hub, but thinking of going bigger for this very reason. Perfect for fall trips, ice camping and now the rainy river!

Are you referring to state-managed lands (e.g. WMAs)? That’s the only regulation in regards to that that I’m aware of.
Here’s the verbiage in the Hunting Guide below. I run mine at a local park where we have pheasant and woodcock, so I wont be disturbing the pheasant so that there are more in late summer and through the winter to give us some action.
When can I train my dog on public land?
Dogs may not be trained on DNR administered lands from April 16th to July 14th.

I believe April 16th? Is the start of quiet hours in the woods and no off leash running, so keep that in mind. What are you referring to?
Its due to nesting season, no off leash dog running so that nests aren’t disturbed.
Saw you guys catch that dandy eye right in front of us Mike! We were in the red and blue Lunds. Awesome day and first weekend on the water.
I really just need to make time to get that done. Been chasing birds too much right now!
I’ve never brined pheasants, but with other game birds and game I’ll make a brine with equal parts sugar and salt, garlic, onions and whatever else you want. Let them sit over night and then cook them.
Good luck!
My bad, been 2 years since we targeted Sharpie… We ended up having a blast of a trip. Hunted north of Medina, ND and we were able to get 5 sharpie total on an evening and morning hunt. The evening hunt they held tight for my pointer and I was able to get in great shooting positions.
Personally I am big on brining birds. Salt, sugar, minced garlic and then ill throw cut up onions in the brine too. I shot some woodcock this past weekend and had the sharpie and woodcock brining in a bag and cooked the woodcock yesterday with onion, mushroom, two strips cut up bacon and some worchester sauce and was surprised how well it tasted! I shot some woodies opening weekend and ate them pretty plan with a flour coating, boy did those suck. So earthy when they’re plain. Sharpies will be grilled tonight with just salt and pepper, brine takes care of the rest.
I’ve seen them in Central/N.Central ND which is where I’ve mainly hunted for birds, kind of remote country not many people upland hunt. MN doesn’t even stand a chance against ND. So much public land, less hunters, can walk for miles and boy are there birds. I am looking to expand my territory and get out west of Sakakawea and into some grassland/badland type country, anyone have experience in this?
I have a 1.5 yr old Small Munsterlander and last year was our first year out so I am itching to get her back on prairie doing her thing!
I kinda want to try hunting them but Im not sure I would enjoy eating them after what I have heard?
For instance I would never shoot another Spruce Grouse or Woodcock because I dont like eating them.
They are great, nice white grouse meat. Cream of mushroom soup with potatoes, wild rice, celery, carrots etc. in the crock pot on low and you’re in business!
Interesting report on Whiteface! lots of small guys in there I have heard. Too bad no bigger ones to report. Good luck on Kab!
There is hope with that report Steelslinger! Love to hear there are some Huns in the area. I had a new pup out in ND last year and we saw a covey land in a field, but we never found them. I have a vendetta to get on some Huns with her this year!
I think this season will be better than expected, we have had a great grasshopper hatch in the grasses. I’m on the border of Maple Grove and Corcoran and have seen birds and me and the dog kicked up a brood of about 8 pheasant chicks in a ditch a few weeks back. One thing this drought will help with is the walking around sloughs!
Awesome!! Looked like a great trip, and the boys had fun!
How many miles you think you paddled?
Nice! You will be all over the map! If you make it to Kab, post a report for us! We did Kab and Nam for fishing opener and it was brutal, fishing wise.
Fished this past weekend just south of Ely and the fishing was easyyy. Using the mapping feature on my bird I was able to find a sunken rock hump that topped out around 7ft and had 11-13ft of sand bottom and rock around it with a drop down into 15-20 ft towards main lake basin. Pulled a silver/blue spinner and a leech mainly in the 11-13ft at 1.1 mph. Graphed fish a foot off bottom and there was a bite in every direction of the pass. Caught my limit of nice eater males Friday evening and then another limit Saturday but all were released. Looking forward to fall cast n blast weekends. Fishing should be good and the leaves should turn early for a good start tog rouse season!
Good luck!
This wasn’t on Fall lake, I wont give up the lake our cabins on but there are some dandy fish out there. Fall lake is mainly a meat run, lots of smaller fish and good crappies out there.
Agreed, if your not on Vermilion or Birch, then a 25+ inch fish is a really nice one in my book.
Against our better judgement, we got out early Saturday morning and hit mid-lake structure…Then the 5ft rollers started coming. We were the only boats out there in our 16.5 ft Lund and 17.5 ft Alumacraft. No glass boats in sight…chickens! We were rewarded with some dandy fish drifting spinners and leeches. They were out and hungry that’s for sure!
Olive, our year old Small Munsterlander! She points fish and that’s where I cast! Lol
I was up from 5/28-6/6, perks of working remote, and fished almost every morning before work and then the evenings. Fishing was best in the early morning, from about 6-9am. Then right at sundown and there after. In the morning, dragging a jig and minnow or a lindy with a leech worked best. Lots of small fish coming on the leech and they were just nipping at it. Males were still in the points and shorelines of bays/river entrances. I caught them in the morning in 12FOW or less. Evenings if I got out early I would hit the deeper water right next to islands or the shallows. 17-20FOW, around humps or saddles. Caught a nice 26inch 45 min after sundown in 8ft on a windblown shoreline, dragging a jig and leech. Biggest takeaway, follow the wind. Watch the wind direction days prior and day of and pick the best shorelines that the wind has pounded, the fish will be there!
Any update on Lily Dale ramp?
Water temps on the rise at ford dam. almost 35 degrees.
Dave, let us know what you find out! Will be making it out this week/end. Pigseye landing was good last weekend. You can boat up river into the city, I didn’t go any further.
Thanks Mark. I was hoping the warm water draining in would have done a little more damage to the ice. But, it’s a start!
Any access updates on Pool 2 Hidden Falls launch? Pool 3 access in Hastings?
Thanks!
