    bob clowncolor,

That is not true, at least in WI. I had a warden trip one of my tip ups this winter and he wrote me an unattended line citation for $186. (the regulations state that you have to immediately tend to the line). He gives 5 minutes to be standing next to it. It took me longer to get to it with my 6 and 9 yr old boys…he has a zero tolerance policy. He told me he could write me a $186 fine for each of the 12 tip ups I had in for myself, wife and two boys… (if one is unattended, they all are)

I invested in the Vulture system that week and sent him a text with a 27.5″ walleye laying next to a sensor at 3:10 in the morning the following weekend. By the way I love the vulture system!

I can not say enough positive things about the Vulture ice system. I bought 12 of them and was nervous about syncing them with the remote. Out of the box they were already synced with the remote from 1 to 6. So, I have two of each number and simply wrote on the transmitters the number they are. I didn’t test the range out past 125yds from my cabin so I can’t say much about how far they work. Being able to test them with the remote to see that they are working and within range is a great feature. I could stand in the cabin and hit #1 on the remote and watch both #1’s light up. I watched a flag pop and within 1-2 seconds the remote was beeping. I was also fortunate enough to hear the alarm go off at 3:05 am sunday and pulled my largest WI walleye through the ice! Very happy with this product!! The lights are bright, the magnets worked great even at -15 and its an incredibly easy system to set up and use.

    wardcst,
I wont need them to work 200 yds, none of my tip ups are that far from our lake house. I looked at the strike alerts but 200 yds was about their max range. All of my tip ups are set with 100 to 125 yds, nice thing about having good fishing out your front door ;-)

    Craig,

thanks for you opinion on my etiquette. Quick question…How is my sitting in my house looking out my window (on the lake) any different then me having my ice castle on the lake looking out that window? If you want to argue distance from said window that’s fine. Anyone fishing with a tip up out of shack can easily go a few minutes without looking out their window..playing a card game, eating some food, telling a story… Ironically my tip ups are usually further from my ice castle than they are from my bedroom window. How many people in sleeper shacks put out tip ups and leave them in during the night without alarms on them. How many people fish at night without lights or alarms on their tip ups?? Thanks for the judgemental comment though waytogo

I run the extra batter pack on the back of the go pro with the extended cage. I watched a video where the guy drilled holes and plugged his mic into the side of the GoPro and plugged the battery pack into the larger back battery. Looked like a great setup…

Thanks guys, I decided to run it off an external power bank rather than the 12v. Power bank is much lighter and fits in my jacket pocket. We’ll see how well it holds up in -10 to -25 temps on big windy next week. I think I’ll be in my legend Xl with the heater on 99% of the time so that should help with battery life. I run my hero3 silver on a five minute loop and when something good happens I stop it and start again. Works great for musky fishing where there is a lot of down time between moments that I want to keep.

I take these meals on back country hunts out west and now use them for meals in the ice castle as well. They have great flavor and decent nutritional value. Just add boiling water and let sit for 10 minutes….I highly recommend them!

I go up and fish with 6-8 guys each year. I’ve stayed at the canalta and the Hamilton house in past years. I prefer the canalta because of the central location, nice rooms, and having food and beverages close along with anything else you might need is nice. I fish with Blackwater cats so we get a discount on the rooms. If you have questions send me a pm.

I just ran a comparison between the clam xl legend and the otter hideout. the cottage seams to me to have the dimensions and weight (80lbs) of a two person rather than a true one person pull behind run and gun type shelter.

    positives for clam XL
    7″ taller (67 vs 60 setup)
    5″ wider (44 vs 39 setup)
    5″ narrower ( 33 vs 38 collapsed)
    16″ shorter (44 vs 60 collapsed)
has more fishable area ( 16 sq ft vs 12.6 sq ft
    both weigh 60lbs

    positives for the otter
4″ shorter height when collapsed (17 vs 21)

appears based on other measurements it must have a longer sled to store more gear. has 108″ length setup vs the 92″ of the clam, yet it has less fishable square footage.

I might just wait until the ice show in st paul next winter to pick one out where I can compare them and actually sit in them before purchasing. I wont need it until early ice next season and my next trip to Winnipeg in feb ’19 anyways. If I had to pick one now I think I would still lean towards the clam XL legend thermal based on dimensions.

thanks for the feedback, Im pretty set on the 1 man. There will be a few of us but the thought process is to each have our own to cover more water. I have an eskimo 949 that we used this year but the wind made it difficult so we’d end up having anchoring it down. This shack will pretty much only be used for lake Winnipeg so it needs to be built well and be able to stand up to harsh conditions.

I just got back from my second trip to LW, and it did not disappoint. We decided to go guided again this year. Its not necessary IMO but I wanted to be on the bite from the time we got there until we left, which we were. Literally 30 seconds into our trip my buddy iced a 32″ monster and that was the start to a very special couple of days. Our final count had 5 fish over 30″, with another 20 fish between 27′ and 28.5. The 27’s were by far the most common size fish we caught. This is a great thread with a ton of great information. The best advice I can give is GO, JUST GO! This bite wont last forever just like the red lake crappie bite. We did release all of our big fish and didn’t keep anything other than “eater” size fish to eat. The quantity of big walleyes is simply amazing. We caught two 30″s, two 28.5″s, a 27″, and lost two other big fish in a spot out of two holes no bigger than a pickup truck in 15 minutes during the middle of the day!

have fun and take good pics!

I had a hard time deciding between the marxum LX-7 and the Helix 7 a couple weeks ago. I decided to go with the helix and tried it out this past weekend for the first time. I’m not regretting that decision one bit! I haven’t fished with the Marcum but I am very happy with the unit and love having the mapping, flasher, and sonar on one unit

    Jamin,

Are you going to send us individual messages with the coupon code when its time to order our batteries and chargers?

    thanks,

    Aaron

Thanks for the feedback guys. I bought the HB today. I’m so used to the menus, maps and sonar with them I feel like it’s a better choice for me as a guy who only targets walleyes and usually in 25′ or less. I believe the new screens and chirp sonar will be more than sufficient for seeing larger game fish and give me the target separation I need. Not too mention I love the lakemaster maps…

Good news is my guy at Scheels told me to try it for a while and if I don’t like it to just bring it back and they’ll swap for a marcum at any time. Not sure if they do that for everyone or just guys that spend the redicilous amounts of money I do there but it’s a nice plan B!

So beyond the weight savings this battery will run longer as well? I just bought the new G2 helix 7 and I’d like a battery and charger if this works with the new unit…

    Thanks!

Big advantage other than weight is the flat discharge rate/curve lithiums provide. More usable voltage for a longer period than a typical SLA.

Awesome, thanks Jamin! Put me down for 1 battery and 1 charger!!

Anyone have any feedback on the difference in sonar, chirp vs marcum 2d? It would seem the chirp might have the advantage in that view compared to the flasher view…

Ski, that’s the hard part, the G2 seems to be a significant improvement over the G1. I plan to use the chirp/sonar screen more than the flasher screen and the detail on that seems fantastic but very few people have experience with it… can you provide some insight into the 8-20 degree cones on the LX7 and the 20-60 degree on the HB? Most of my fishing is 10′-25′ for walleyes. Do you know if it takes full size SD cards or just the micro? My lake master chips are the full size and I’d rather not have to buy more chips just for this unit…
