Drop shotting is one of my favorites also. I like to use a small octopus hook and a gulp 1″ minnow nose hooked. I may try this strategy with a few of the plastics I bought for ice fishing also…mustache worm etc…Have had good luck off of weed edges with this technique.

I have 4 fenwick hmm rods including a 6’6″ ml. It is my go to rod for fishing walleyes and smallies in central iowa On the rivers. Everything from cranks to jigs to rigging. Really great versatile rod. Nice and sensitive with braid.

I have 2 Fenwick HMX 6′ Light spinning rods that I like for crappies. I also have fished with them for perch, trout, and small stream walleye fishing. Paired with a Pflueger president they are a pretty sweet combo for less than $150.

I really like the fenwick rods. I have a handful of the HMG series in 2 peice and love them. My personal favorite for walleyes is my HMXS 66ML-2. Just a great all around rod for sensitivity and strength.

Received my LX3 TC yesterday from Reeds…Too bad all our ice is shady down here in central Iowa now! Have to wait a couple of weeks to head north and use it. I didn’t pay the $399 either but intend on sending in the $50 rebate. That was one reason I went with the LX3 over a few other units.

Thanks. What I found is that if you click on the image of the LX5/LX3 the old rebate form appears. If you click on the link at the bottom of the page, the new form is linked there.

I have 3 of these. 1 for jigs. 1 for plastics. 1 for spoons, darters, etc…Plano 1070 Side by Sides (Fly boxes-Cheap)

I have them labeled and store them in a 3 compartment spinner bait box.

Works for me. Compact. Can take the cases with me in my pocket if I want to.

Fished 8-1 today at the Croix near Stillwater. Pulled cranks until about 10:30. Then jigged with gulp and crappie minnows. Ended up with 2 whites, 2 short walleyes, 1 crappie, 1 nice smallmouth, and 1 drum. Not fast action but enough to keep us interested.

I will be a newbie to the St. Croix this weekend. Where would you suggest launching around Stillwater? How is the fishing in that area? Any particular techniques we should use?

    Thank you.

Reporting from pool 8 from the weekend> Didn’t do very well. Fished hard for a few northerns, a few small walleyes and saugers, and a few panfish over the weekend. Was a good learning experience. The river is definitely a different fishing experience than I’ve ever had before. Fun experience and can’t wait to go back even though the fishing was tough.

I thought about that and reasoned that if I were fishing in Minnesota as a non resident and transported fish across the border, I am still legal because I caught the fish in Minnesota. I’m not sure this is any different. I just need to follow Minnesota law. I saw something about a special harvest regulation for bluegills. Is that the case for pool 8?

Any word on the Walleye bite? Pike? Panfish?

I have a number of Fenwick HMX rods and really like them. Nice sticks for 75-90 bucks.

20 pound vanish fluoro and a circle hook. Like a few beads or a small spinner for a little extra flash/attraction. Not cut offs yet and have landed a few around 10 lbs on that set up. Every once in a while re-tie because of frays in the line, but not too often.

I like to fish it with a jig head as well as on a drop shot rig. I would think both would serve you well fishing for perch. I too have caught some nice crappies with the 2.5 inch minnows and during the winter, had one hundred perch day with the 1 inch gulp minnows. I think it is a good alternative to minnows.

I do not hunt with one, but my buddy does. He really likes it, particularly while duck hunting in the early morning. He did have a problem with his first one. I guess some how he bent the fiber do hicky and his shots were WAY off. At least that is what he claims. He gets kinda pevish when I out shoot him from the boat.

Remington is also offering a mail in rebate of $50.00 for the CDL I think.

Way to stick with it Dunn, glad you got a couple. Ive got two tags left to fill until the 10th of Janurary.

If I were you, I would head over to 600 Acres by Coralville. Head towards Mac Bride St Park. On the north side of the road there is a golf course. Back up in there on the West end is all public hunting. It is Fed land so it is not marked like normal. There are some big does running in there and they have had very very little pressure. I guy with a ML could sneak in there and pop one… that is if your sights are on I know there are atleast 7 of them in there, and some big yotes.

You may want to look at putting on a Limbsaver Recoil pad. They are a bit spendy at $30.00 or so, but we put one on a 20ga for a young man who is afraid of recoil and he shoots everything out of it up 3in slugs. I tried his 870 and it kicked less then my Ithica 51. I bet on a auto loader like yours you could put an egg between the stock and your shoulder. (You Tube that if you do) good luck and speedy recovery.

I’d put money down that they are called Brush Wolves. It is a cross between Coyote and Timber Wolf. They are pretty common around here. They are bigger than Yote but not as tough as wolves.
