I’d say we’re lucky to only be down by 1 right now. If we can somehow pull one off here that would be huge!

Imagine that, he says shutout twice and they score twice. I’m not extremely superstitious but you just don’t say the s word while a goalie has a shutout going!

Seriously no call? That would be a penalty in men’s hockey!

I feel like we’re making a lot of simple mistakes as well.

I feel like the US team has a lot of talent, but it appears to me that Canada understands the game a lot better. The refs are in the way of the play so much that it’s fairly embarrassing, and I do not understand the inconsistency of calls. The body contact rule makes no sense to me, we get a penalty for a check on the boards, but a Canada player completely blows up on of our girls behind the net without the puck and it’s no call. To me it seems like they can’t decide whether they want to let them play or call everything.

I don’t watch a lot of women’s hockey so maybe that is the reason, but this is extremely frustrating to watch.

11:10 ET, I’m staying up for it here in Michigan. It’s going to be an early morning but hopefully worth it unlike the men’s game last night!

I have had both the Ion and Ion X and I don’t think you can go wrong with either. I have never had the drill setup but I know a lot of guys seem to like it. I run the X currently and I don’t think I will ever own a different auger. I have two batteries, but have never run out of the first one and I like to punch a lot of holes. I am from Fargo but now live in Michigan, and I think it would be smart to have two batteries if you like to punch a lot of holes and live in North Dakota, Minnesota, or Wisconsin, but it’s definitely not necessary in Michigan even with punching a lot of holes. I have used the Ions quite a bit so let me know if you have any questions!

I do A LOT of running and gunning and wanted to know roughly how many holes I could pop @18 inches of ice with 1 lb tank. or do I need to take multiple out with me .

I think it’s hard to gauge how many holes from one propane canister, but I don’t ever remember running out with my HC40, and I haven’t used the P1 enough yet to really have a good estimate. I like to punch a lot of holes, so I would always bring 2 or 3 canisters but I don’t remember ever running out of the first one. They don’t take up that much room and don’t weigh a ton so it’s better to be safe than sorry I would say.

Would you want to be judged for the rest of your life for something you did when you were in college? I’m pretty sure almost everyone did stupid things in college, but then you learn from it and grow up.

I used to have an Ion and now have an Ion X, and I can’t say enough about these augers. They are light, easy to use, and drill fast enough for me at least. I just recently tried out the Eskimo P1 Propane, and I did a comparison between the two for speed. The Ion X cuts just a bit slower, but by the time you pick up the P1 and start it, you would be halfway through the hole with the Ion. I had each auger sitting on the ground, and I started the timer, picked up the auger, drilled two holes, and then stopped the timer, repeating with each auger. They were both right around 30 seconds, the Ion actually being a bit faster. This was only through about 10″ of ice, so if the ice were thicker I think the P1 would end up being faster, especially after a series of holes, but it really isn’t different enough to make a big difference I don’t think. I know I personally drill way more holes now because it is so easy to pick up the Ion and punch a few holes by just pressing a button. I don’t think I will ever switch back to a power auger because I just don’t see the need! Please let me know if you have any questions about the Ion/Ion X as I have used them quite a bit. I can’t speak for the Strikemaster or Cordless Drill setups, but I have heard good things about both.

    @slabhunter

The problem with this argument is that the NHL is probably the tightest among the professional sports leagues, and everybody obviously wants to win. There can only be one winner, and in a league where pretty much any team can be good on any given night, it is tough to be that one champion. I think it is borderline ridiculous for hockey fans to expect their team to win the Stanley Cup. As a Wild fan, I would obviously love to see them win a cup, but I don’t think it is something that you can expect. The “I don’t care what has to happen, we just need to be better” mindset doesn’t hold a ton of weight in my opinion, because we could tank and get a high 1st round draft pick and that guy could not turn out, or we could make trades that don’t work out, we could fire our GM and end up with someone worse, etc. Obviously sometimes changes need to be made, but I think it is okay to be a little patient, especially since we have a solid coach and what really should be a great hockey team. I understand the frustration of watching our team and thinking, “man, we really should be better”, but you never know what will happen. Maybe we figure it out and have a really good second half, or maybe it takes until next year, but I think the bottom line is that when you are a fan you have to take the good with the bad. I’m sure I will take some flak for this, but I would personally rather enjoy watching the best sport on earth and if my team wins that is obviously a major bonus, but it just doesn’t seem worth the stress to always be angry that we are not better.

If anyone has ever done any hiring they would know how much of a crap shoot it really is when you’re dealing with people.

    This is spot on.

I think you make some really good points. Definitely can’t be proven, and I meant to say something about taking it with a grain of salt, but I got off track haha. I definitely understand the money thing, but it still sucks. The guy that comes into the fly shop was a head coach for the Pens when they won the cup a few years back, and it was pretty interesting to ask him about Crosby because it’s a completely reverse situation. Lots of people don’t like the guy and call him a whiner, but he said that he is absolutely not a whiner and a great guy in the locker room. It’s hard for me to get over Suter potentially being on his high horse when the best player in the league is not even like that, ya know?

I would like to chime in on the whole Suter thing. I probably would not post this anywhere but here, but I feel like we have a small enough group that view this form that it is probably okay. I also want to make it clear that I am not trying to toot my own horn or anything of the sort, I just think that this information is interesting and I think you guys will think so as well.

I have two connections to the NHL, a former coach who now coaches for a team with a coach that coached Suter and Parise for the Wild, and a former NHL coach that won a Stanley Cup within the last 5 years that comes into the fly shop that I work for. We usually end up talking hockey for at least an hour every time he comes in, which is pretty sweet! Anyways, all I have heard from both of these people is that both Suter and Parise have attitude problems, and they have even gone as far as to say that Suter is a cancer in the locker room. Both coaches have told me that the former Wild coach who now coaches with my former coach was fired because he asked Suter if he would play fewer minutes. Both Suter and Parise went over his head to the GM and asked that that coach be let go. I may not have believed it as I am not a Suter hater and to me it seems like Parise has a great attitude, but this has come from both sources. I want to preface this by saying that I think Suter is one of the best defenceman in the NHL, but according to these sources he is known around the league as “second-gear Suter” because he plays so many minutes and is never trying his hardest. I do agree with the people who said that he is an effortless skater, but it is hard to ignore two NHL coaches saying these things. I have always felt that he would be more effective if he played fewer minutes, and this was replicated by the two sources.

As others have mentioned, there has been something weird going on in the locker room, and many, including these two coaches, believe that it has to do with Suter and possibly Parise being cancers in the locker room. To me, this really sucks because I was extremely excited when we signed them, and they did not seem to have holier than thou attitudes like some athletes do. I’d love to know what people think of this as I found it very interesting.

I’ve owned the Eskimo HC40 Propane, the Ion, and currently have the Ion X, and just got the Eskimo P1 in the mail yesterday. I have nothing bad to say about the 3 I’ve used, and can give you an update on the P1 after I use it Sunday or Monday. All have been 8″. Let me know if you have any specific questions!

I moved from Fargo to Big Rapids almost three years ago and I have unfortunately not found any evidence that the inland fisheries around here come even close to Minnesota. I would love to be proved wrong this year!

What would you guys think of a Wild gtg? Pun intended.

You guys can arm wrestle, thumb wrestle, paper-rock-scissors or whatever to solve your arguments.

Only requirement is that you need to have a 3 wise men before it starts. You can drink grape soda or whatever you want after that.

Haha! I live in Michigan right now and I would definitely make the drive if I could guarantee everyone would be there.

Thanks for all of the information! The fishing in Aberlour wasn’t planned, so I didn’t have my Spey rod with me. I live in Michigan so I swing for steelhead all the time with switch and Spey rods. I like to tie the traditional flies just because they are fun to tie and I like the history of it. If I ever get to go back I will definitely be hitting you up for some information! I would love to get out to Highland Park! What’s your current favorite malt?

What section of the Spey did you fish? I was there this fall but only fished for a few minutes with a single hand rod because that’s all I had time for. I was in Aberlour. Did you tour any distilleries? I can’t wait to go back and hire a ghillie, Scotland is an amazing country, especially if you love whisky and traditional fly fishing. I’m going to try and attach a picture of some of the Scottish salmon flies I’ve tied.

Nice looking patterns. You’ll have to take a stab at the Green Highlander as well. Salmon in Scotland on a hand tied Green Highlander. Make sure to bring your tweed.

The Green Highlander is a great fly, I just don’t have all of the materials yet to tie it. Some of those intricate traditional flies are pretty crazy to tie!

Well, that section of the Itchen is so heavily fished that I couldn’t have caught a cold there. So there is that.

Still a beautiful place to blank.

As a die hard walleye fisherman that grew up fishing the lakes in Minnesota near Fargo, I never thought I would fly fish, but my wife and I moved to Michigan two years ago for her Optometry school and that is basically all I have done since. I went from not knowing how to cast to owning 5 fly rods and reels and I also tie my own flies now. It is extremely addicting! I barely ever even think about walleye fishing anymore, but that could be because the trout fishing around me is amazing and there are hardly any Walleyes to be found.
