second weekend in June.

There is NO reason to kill a big muskie. They do not make great table fare and graphite replicas shoot the mounting idea out of the water.
I do not know how anybody who’s had the privilege of catching a magnificent beast like that could club it over the head and stick it on a stringer.
I very rarely keep any fish. Certainly not against keeping a few for the frying pan, being they are panfish, walleye, northern or sauger. IMHO there’s no reason to kill bass either. LM or SM.
bucktails in asst’d colors. 5 or 6 of them. Suicks, at least 9 inchers. I like the Bucher Top Raiders. Propeller bait. just for a start.
I fish Hayward all the time. I even had a 6 fish day out of one of the lakes mentioned. those will end quickly if big
fish like that are continued to be killed. I’m glad the child caught a big muskie. However, by killing it
they’re taking away a chance for somebody else’s son/daughter to get the thrill of a big fish like that.
I could go on and on. If it’s legal they have the right to kill it. Just really, really sad. I’m sure the guy releases alot of fish.
Muskie kill shots REALLY depress me.
Cortland Spectron is the line I use. 18 to 24″ wire leader. cross lock snaps on the swivel
looks like the one his son was cradling in his arms was probably not going to make it either.
actually the boys want to go after bass and panfish. not a bunch of hardcores. just looking for a decent place to pick up a few fish and rent a pontoon for a day. Steve, any tips I’ve got from you have been good ones. How about Birchwood area? These are all guys I grew up with in the Ettrick area so south of Hayward would be cool .
why ruin it? it’s been my experience that there is always great fishing around beaver dams. they provide current breaks and lots of structure. if there are rocks, you pretty much have fish heaven..
Kid, let’s try the Yellow this year. I’ve been wanting to try it but have no knowledge.
that’s a pretty sad story. you know how long it takes a fish to get that big? a real shame
I have to agree with Chris. I think the next record will come out of Leech or Mille Lacs. Something to do with the strain of fish they are growing over there. I heard they transplanted some Leech fish over to ‘Tonka and those fish are getting huge! somebody caught a huge one throught the ice last year. Bass fisherman are starting to get mad about all the muskie over there.
Kid,
you, me and some muskie action next June. Got some other photos that I’ll scan and get up here. Bigger ones.
I know of a couple of spots up by Hayward.
consider me standing. I fish muskies thoughout the year, but always hire my favorite muskie guide for a full/new moon hunt in August. Fish the Hayward WI lakes. Put 6 in the boat last year on August 22nd (full moon). smallest was 39″ and the largest was 44″. fished from 2 PM ’til dark. best muskie day I’ve had in my life. 4 on figure 8 bucktails and two on quick strikes.
Jon J, Cady put you on some sweet equipment.
lures?
bucktails (any color as long as they’re black!)
Bucher Top Raider
9″ Suick
Maina quick-strike sucker rig. best there is IMHO
Big plastic sucker colored Bull-Dawg lure
ouch!
that cold fron that moved through on 9/20 sure shut things down up in Hayward. 12 hours on the 21st netted 2 small largemouth, 6″ walleye and a rock bass. My buddy caught a 32″ muskie on a jig and a twister tail the night before. slow, slow, slow.
Kid , let’s try to find out where they’ve been poppin’ the ‘skies on the ‘Croix. I’m fishin’ this weekend with a buddy and his son. going to see if the sauger are goin’ down by Prescott. we’ll probably fish up to the Kinni. Beanies tourney is this weekend so there will be a few boats out I’m sure. If we get a decent evening let’s go. maybe Wednesday? Sounds like the weather is going to be sort of lousy. I put a couple of Scotty’s rod holders on. we can try some long lining.
This is the ol’ SteveO. Kid, I got some awesome pictures to show you from Hayward last month.
Going to be chasin’ the skies all over Hayward this weekend.
St Croix the next.
October is looking pretty open though.
anybody wanna go? let me know.
I made the same mistake of fishing Nelson in Sept. 3 years ago. This time of the year is tough on that lake. The only thing I’ve caught on that lake is LM Bass. I hear it’s really good in the Spring.
Walleyes?
Try Lost Land, LCO, Grindstone, Black, or Moose Lake. I also hear there are some walleyes in Sand Lake.
Going to be fishing Black and Moose this weekend, but are going to be targeting strictly Muskie. Fished Lost Land last weekend and did well on hand size or better Crappie.
Kid,
If you standing up by the lot and look down the right hand side of the launch, that’s where this guys truck was! You told me to back down there and try to stay to the left and that’s what I’ve been doing. His trailer was still attached and the boat was floating over the top of it. He had a real small boat so I don’t know what his thinking was. I asked him if this was the first time he’s fished the lake. His reply was “No, I’ve fished here all my life!!??
weird stuff. there was a guy there with a F350 Ford and he yanked him out. Stuff you see at landings!!
Bite was good that night. Blowin’ up all over the place on that Chug-Bug
can anyone recommend a nice resort over there that takes pets? Wife and I want to go up 4th of July wekend.
thanks
going to try Bass tomorrow morning. Hopefully we’ll beat the crowd. I’ll post if I do any good. I still swear there was an algae bloom Memorial Day.
I should be visiting this thing more. seem to always get caught up on FTR. I really like the Hayward area and fish it whenever I can. I know a couple of guides in the Mercer WI area that may be interested in contributing. They fish the Turtle Flambeau Flowage exclusively. I’ll contact them to see if they are interested.
Pax,
thanks for the tip! Sounds perfect. We’ll definitely try it out. I checked it out on Lake-Link. com. Sounds interesting.
well Kid,
my buddy from dallas would probably love to catch some largemouth (I would too). Squaw? I’ve heard of that. Anything up Northwest of Somerset?
leinieman,
that sounds great. I’m SteveO on the FTR board. don’t know why I changed my name. This cold snap sucks, but hopefully things will warm up and we can hang a few ‘eyes. I’m open most weekends as my wife sells real estate. That fish you lost sounds pretty exciting.
That’s pretty country you live in over there. I fish the Flambeau River 3 or 4 times a year out of the Fifield/Park Falls area. Never know what’s tugging on your line! I would definitley like to get out before the Memorial day wekend. PM me on this or the FTR board when the water warms up a little.
Thanks and looking forward to wetting a line with you. Always like to gain knowledge on smaller rivers.
I live over in Hudson about 40? miles from the the bridge that we’re talkin about. I’d like to come over and canoe that sometime. or take your 12’flatbottom. I buy the Leinies and food you show me where and maybe we can get on some fish!!! I’d like to do it after Mem. day. Like a chance at Mr. Muskie.
leiniedude,
I’ve got a 17 ft Crestliner (fishawk) with a 90 horse on it.
Damn, I love fishing smaller rivers. How far down the river can you go past the lake. Interstate bridge area?
leinieman,
how’s thje Red Cedar? I drive over it every time I’m on my way to visit my mom. Looks like a pretty decent stretch of water. Is there anywhere to rent canoes around there? Doesn’t look big enough for my boat.
that makes sense. I thought it was odd that there was no one ice fishing on it.
Hey Jim,
This is SteveO from the FTR board. I fish the flowage in the summertime. try this
