Good talk going on here. I would like to say this if I may. Hunters -NOT ALL- expect select members of the DNR to manage the herd for big bucks, but cry when these members manage the state herd for survival. I say state because that is probably (just my opinion) how they see it. Would hunters rather see 900 or more deer shot now, or see many many more die from the disease and lose the state herd? I would guess there is some reason 900 was chosen. Must be a percentage thing. It sucks it is so close to home. I’m glad the deer aren’t going to waste though. Anymore thoughts?

Just thinking out load here. Would they be shooting these young deer/fawns to prevent the spread? We’ve all seen how curious a young deer is.(Meaning the nose-nose contact) I would guess a young animal can have it(CWD) there may be difficulty getting an acurate sample. I don’t know. Can an infected doe pass the disease to it’s fawn(fetus)? I don’t know. Or is it a case as some may think, just trigger happy guys with high powered rifles? I don’t know. I just would rather not see or hear people bashing the DNR as a whole, in general. There are alot of good guys/gals just following orders-going to work. I thank them for it. It’s the decision makers that need to be held acountable. Not the “soldiers”. Sorry I rambled. I hope some made sense.
March 10, 2011 at 2:08 pm #945809I’m really really not trying to fight here, having a opinion is a good thing, powerful. It keeps the mind working. Learning. I like to hear what people have to say. I too know many hard working DNR people.
I wish to add another opinion..With the whole fawn issue….When a I kill a “nice doe” in the fall or late season I know there’s a good chance of it already carrying a fawn. Am I evil? I guess for some, out of sight out of mind. It’s a crazy deal that’s for sure. I hope we as hunters can learn from this. What could have been done? or should be? Sparking the fire again, maybe? No finger pointing, if you can hold back. Let’s play nice.March 10, 2011 at 12:33 pm #945779The herd will return. How would you like the job to decide the fate of Minnesota’s deer herd? The tests are being done to make sure your kids kids can have the chance to deer hunt? The disease it here. It will not just go away. What they are doing is a “band-aide” I’m pretty sure they know it too. Eventually it will be everywhere. It’s almost like a cancer. They just want to know how fast it has spread. It angers me that people blame the DNR, you know what… go to school, apply for the job, do something about it. My opinoin.
June 15, 2010 at 12:45 pm #880049ORDER YOUR NEW INVISIBLE DOCK NOW!!!! COMES COMPLETE WITH DOCK CLEETS!
June 11, 2010 at 1:33 pm #879130My malibu does that. I have to turn the key to the on position for 10 or 15 minutes and wait. After that time the light goes off. It starts then. That dang light always comes on when I’m in a hurry. I’m sure it’s probably different seeing is how its a Ford product.
June 4, 2010 at 12:45 pm #877269There are two landings in the W. Newton area. What size boat do you have? You can get out with a larger boat at the older one, but…. you might polish the prop and skeg a bit. The new one is steep. Eric, where are they pumping the sand from? I see they are grubbing where the old Minnesota cove was at.
November 20, 2009 at 1:41 pm #69439Some soak it for a day, but I find it seems to come out the same if I soak or just cook it right a way. I like to boil it just like box rice. I use beef broth and a little Italian seasoning and garlic. ( 1/2 cup rice, 1/2 cup broth, 1 cup water, temp at Med.High, 2 cloves garlic chopped. Boil off water hopefully the cornel cracks). More or less season to taste. All I know is that a little wild rice goes a long way. You think that is a enough, take a little more out cause man is it filling. AND TASTEY!!!
September 17, 2009 at 12:52 pm #804839It’s amazing the amount of fish the Natural Run produces. I’ll bet that’s me in the background. I’ve caught many o fish casting 1/32 oz jig tipped with a worm all along the shore there this year. Some big cats lurk around there too. I’ve caught some good sized crappies on that tree you were sitting on too. It’s crazy the amount of bass fishermen that pound that area. One day, I counted 23 boats that went past me tied up to that tree. I’d joke with them and tell them I was the toll guy. 5 bucks a pop.
May 28, 2009 at 5:54 pm #780027My buddies and I were up that way Mem. weekend for 5 days. We stayed on White Pine. Did pretty good. A few perch and walleye. I’d just like to add to some of the replies that, while I was up there I noticed the last two days there were a few mayflies popping up. You may ( don’t hold me to this “idea”) have to deal with a hatch pending on the lakes. White Pine is quite shallow though, so you may not have to worry about it on other lakes. Good luck! Remember bug spray and rain gear. Never fails for me I forget one or both!
December 29, 2008 at 2:00 pm #732345I’ve made the trip to Alma the last two weekends hoping to crawl out and catch a few saugers, but this last weekend on Saturday, a guy could have slid a small boat out and fished all of the way to the powerlines. I hit the fingerlakes instead with little luck, “little” luck. Only caught two gills over 8 in. A guy had plenty of company there.
October 21, 2008 at 12:51 pm #40630I used it when I went to college at UW-Stevens Point. It definetly helped because I didn’t have the money due to cost of school (aka beer money ). It also let me experience hunting in new country and gave me a reason to skip class.
September 20, 2007 at 11:59 am #609648I don’t know if it counts, but I personally have caught a 20 and my dad has caught a 31 on hard water. It was 17 years ago and haven’t broke the personal records since. None even close. The slimers for some reason were stacked up in this area for about a week and POOF gone! Man did they fill up the hole though. I’ll have to see if ma kept any of the photos.
July 24, 2007 at 9:47 pm #593576From a good source of mine, I was informed that the individual that announced this issue has now been fired. The guy only wanted to help out a vastly used natural resource. It’s just that he made the wrong special interest group angry.
June 7, 2007 at 10:29 pm #578807I’m not running E85. I was just wondering why they don’t make that in an outboard motor. I would think it would be possible….or no? I mean alot of exhaust ends up in the water, so if this fuel is cleaner, why not design a motor that can run on it?
May 4, 2007 at 4:59 pm #567910I don’t like rude behavior in a man. Won’t tolerate it. Woodroe F. Call Lonesome Dove
April 30, 2007 at 5:32 pm #566269I stayed away form the WW this weekend and went more south. Trout run by Troy. Only caught 1 brown about 14 on Sat. and then 1 brown about 16 on Sunday. Man was it hot. I could see alot of fish, but they were very lethargic (spelling) . The water was very clear and there was alot of vegetation. It was pretty cool to see all of them fish milling around though. I didn’t see a single person on the stream.
April 13, 2007 at 4:57 pm #560445Thanks for the info. Gonna try and sneak out this weekend. Looks like the weather is going to hold out. Streams will be lined with people.
April 6, 2007 at 8:46 pm #558135I like to run PowerService. I too haven’t had any fuel related problems (knock on wood). They say the new diesel 15ppm is more abrassive I guess. Sure wish it were cheaper. The ol ford took 89 dollars to fill today. I still had a 1/4 tank left.
April 6, 2007 at 8:33 pm #558125He said it’s pretty amazing to see a trout smaller than the rap take it on. I suppose it’s aggression or territorial.
April 6, 2007 at 8:29 pm #558121He goes with braided line for snags. That’s his theory, bend the hook instead of lossing the lure. He says it doesn’t seem to bother the fish at all.
March 26, 2007 at 12:44 pm #553361I’m leaving it at this. To hear an airboat blowing around everytime I’m out just seems to ruin my “outdoor experience”. It’s like hearing the alarm clock on monday morning.
March 23, 2007 at 6:01 pm #552596The new landing, just north of West Newton is open. The old West Newton landing still has ice.
March 23, 2007 at 12:54 pm #552431I don’t know, it’s just that I grew up on the river. Not visited it on weekends or had a cabin. I didn’t watch TV. When I was bored I went fishing, hunting, or trapping on the river. In my time 20+ yrs, much has changed, in my opinion to the worse. I am begining to understand why kids aren’t getting into the outdoors. They won’t ever get to experience the “good ol’ days”. Technology is making things too easy-too lazy. Signing off on this topic. Thank god, Huh.
March 22, 2007 at 1:09 pm #551932I guess in my opinion,…JUST MY OPINION…the only time the should be used on the river is for rescue purposes. A 10hp and a push pole can get you anywhere you want. As for trapping I think it makes it too easy. Sooner or later you’ll trap out the rats, cause you can get too them all. Little lotus eatin’ son of a guns don’t stand a chance. Fur prices are in the dumps anyway.
March 9, 2007 at 10:14 pm #547054Yes the long walk is in reference to a place fished north of the Alma dam. Has anyone traveled to this area lately?
March 8, 2007 at 2:15 pm #546338Wouldn’t mind catchin’ a few eyes or some perch. Maybe, just maybe trout. The fellas don’t much care for the oilcans. We’ll probably be tenting it, so it’d be nice if a campsite was near.
