Where is Deer Island? I’ve never heard of it and don’t see it on my map.

It doesn’t sound like I’m going to make it now, going up to Pool 9 looking for some slabs. Make sure you guys post what happens, I’ll be looking for it and good luck!

I’ve never considered myself much of a walleye fisherman but a person would think that if you put enough time in at least a little torpedo would show up? The res isn’t a favorite place of mine but recently I have hit it a couple times fishing exclusively for walleyes. I know they’re in there but so far no luck. No radios here but I like the idea and will be in touch.

I knew Joe would see this! I’m going to talk to Steve but I’m guessing he’s game, hard to say though. Hopefully we make it and see ya down there. If not good luck at Twain. Though if you want some nice crappies you should be going up to the river buddy. Steve and I were up there last weekend and ended up mostly crappie fishing. Those were nice fish indeed, I was impressed. If I can catch big crappies it’s hard to say what someone that actually knew what they were doing could do.

It sounds like you’ve got Desoto Bay down right. If your map shows mile marks it’s pretty much directly east of 668 and then goes up from there. RR Tracks, rock bank, hard to miss. The downstream island point comes out a ways so just don’t go to 668 and turn east because that would a problem. When I was fishing Winneshiek we just put in by the bridge and never went up. With the water levels it’s a safe guess that the only way in from the main channel is the entrance at marker 667, there’s a closing dam there and you’ll no doubt see that. Good luck!

My brother and I were up there just this last weekend. Don’t know about the gills but we got into some very nice crappies. We were fishing the east side of Winneshiek Slough down from the bridge. Most of the fish were around 11+” and we had a bunch that exceeded the 12” mark. I snapped my long rod trying to lift one in the boat, that was pretty stupid and my brother forgot his so we ended up mostly just doing the bobber thing. Most of the fish came out of about 10 feet of water and were from mid depth down. I don’t do much crappie fishing but that was a blast and I was really impressed with the size of the fish.

Hit MacBride again today from 7-1:30 and caught a few bass. Not a lot by any means but after the front it could have been worse, I’m thinking I got maybe seven or eight? The biggest was 17”, also had a 15.5” and a 14”, the rest were dinks. So I was fairly pleased with at least the two larger fish. All came off plastic except for the 14” on a spinnerbait. Stopped by Cleppe’s for minnows just in case the bass bite was dead. After seeing the walleye in his tank that came out of MacBride some time had to be spent on that. All that time only produced a dink catfish, should have just kept bass fishing!

I was using 9.5” plastic worms with a 4/0 hook so I didn’t actually catch any of the bluegills. They were just nipping off tails and trashing plastic. The water was stained more so than usual I thought so there wasn’t much to see. The bluegills that I did see were just little guys. Hard to say though, a few tail nippers smacked me pretty good so there might be some nice ones in there?

Hey G, I believe you and I are from the same neighborhood. This is my first post here but since I read yours and appreciate the input it seems only right that I should return the gesture. Haven’t fished MacBride since May but hit it this morning and that was pretty disappointing except for one fish. Fished from 7-1 and only caught four bass total, two of which were dinks. One was 18.5” though so that brightened things up a little. For the most part plastic was the only thing getting hit and rocks didn’t produce crap. The bluegills were tearing up my plastic, went through a lot of that today.
