Sorry, this off topic but I’d like try Oahe next winter late ice for pike on tip ups. Almost no info out there so I’m thinking it’s not that crowded like lake of the woods. Thinking of a trip the first few days in March. What section of the lake would be best for big pike? I found a place to rent down by cow creek. Looks like a good area with a few big creek arms but wasn’t sure how it froze being closer to the dam on the south end by Pierre. Does it freeze better north?

Pustol,
Use to fish there in high school through the ice. Would catch a ton of snakes. Run out of bait kind of fishing. Then people found out there were nice gills in there. The lake turned into a zoo for a couple years with 20-30 guys out there. With the size of the lake, fishing went to heck real quick. Even the northern fishing died quite a bit. Suprised you caught crappies. The best panfishing was always right in the middle straight out from the lone house
February 23, 2012 at 12:51 am #1041898Stopped again yesterday. Can’t get over the bait. Great size! I lived in northern MN for 2 years and we used 8-10 inch suckers for Pike on quick strike rigs. Didn’t think I’d ever be able to find bait big enough in WI to use those rigs again…let alone shiners! It’s a great way to deter those snakes when looking for the big females this time of year.
February 21, 2012 at 12:46 am #1041114Well I guess the days of buying it frozen without preservatives are over. If anyone else is looking for big pike bait stop in Alma. I went out of my way today to stop at Schreiner’s on the south end of town. He has a great selection of all live bait for panfish, walleye, and pike. Picked up some of the biggest bait I’ve been able to find in WI in a long time. Big suckers and shiners.
February 14, 2012 at 1:17 am #1038622Was fishing April 10th last year with an ATV and even saw a truck yet! Had two feet of ice yet, but of course it was garbage ice. If you are running ATVs or willing to walk out even you would be suprised how late you can fish.
February 4, 2012 at 1:47 am #1035270Was just at Agate. I believe they open at 6 or 630. I imagine most open around that time. The road there only goes out a mile or so with houses from 18ft to 33ft with most the houses piled up in 26-27ft. Road was in good shape though. Found some good fishing away from the crowds.
February 3, 2012 at 1:27 am #1034872Just need a light on the camera. I have an old one that has a built in light and does a decent job
January 31, 2012 at 1:54 am #1033639Fish move deeper this time of year. Clear water lakes fish good at night and darker lakes better during the day. Both fish good right at sunrise/sunset. I have found that deeper and clearer lakes typically have a better bite in mid/late winter when other lakes slow down. Keep soaking tip-ups in new areas a foot off the bottom and spread them out until you find them. Not sure if that helps at all…
January 23, 2012 at 1:55 am #1031031Awesome looking house! The fold down door is key, yet it limits floor plans. You did a great job working it all in. How much $ do you have in it and what size house is it?
January 17, 2012 at 11:12 pm #1029135Send it back. I took 2 back to Scheels this fall. I was hoping they would exchange on the spot as they do with their Scheels brand rods. Anyways, they sent them back to St. Croix at no charge (either direction) and no proof of purchase. They didn’t know what St. Croix would do if anything, fix them, or send new ones. A couple weeks later Scheels called and said I had 2 new rods waiting. Great customer service on Scheel’s and St. Croix’s end. That’s why you spend the extra buck and buy good brand names. Luepold is the same way with all their optics. No questions asked.
January 10, 2011 at 2:46 pm #924643Mark your trail with a gps so you can come back the same way. The breakers may move and change throughout the day, but you’ll be ok with a sled. Haven’t been across myself, but I have talked to some folks that have. You could also run east and get on the staked snowmobile trail that comes over Pine Island and go that way…..lot of extra miles though coming from Long Point.
January 4, 2011 at 11:14 pm #922613The pucks suck. At least they have for me. Maybe it’s always too cold. I’d shovel the snow off or use a roof rake and get as much of it as you can. Then pound the ice on the edges with a hammer. It’s hard work and you need to stay ahead of it before the ice gets too thick. Getting the snow off will help more ice from forming though.
December 16, 2010 at 12:30 am #917558Size wise. L or XL. Quality wise, I would say they are as good as any. I know the set is nearly identically to the clam suit. I do agree the pant legs need an elastic snow band. I don’t know what other brands have it though. I know the clam suit doesn’t, or at least they didn’t in the past. I had the elastic band sewn in mine. The jacket is awesome. Warm and a million pockets.
December 7, 2010 at 12:48 am #914982Depends on the house weight. 8″ should be golden for most set-ups. I’d go on 7″…
November 30, 2010 at 10:52 pm #913500Some lakes are shiner lakes and some are sucker lakes. Some it doesn’t matter. That’s my opinion anyways
November 29, 2010 at 2:10 am #912954Drilled 50 holes? Needed an auger to drill through all 2 inches of ice? Ha. Was out on Friday. Ice still wasn’t thick enough for me. About 1.5 inches. 1 punch with the spud anywhere there was snow. A couple of the cracks had let water on top of the ice and then refroze. That was the only “safe” ice with about 2.5″.
November 26, 2010 at 12:08 am #912365Well Pustol…how much ice? 1.5″? Maybe see you out there Saturday. But it will probably be a zoo by then since you posted this pic. Haha
November 18, 2010 at 8:15 pm #910711Second weekend of deer season back in the cemetery bay. Feeling pretty confident about that one.
September 1, 2010 at 4:54 am #896821Get out in 30-34 FOW and drift with a spinner rig & crawler. You’ll find ’em!
August 15, 2010 at 6:22 pm #893455The river is at an average flow right now. Clarity is good. We haven’t had all the rain up here. Cold front moving through today though. Was 90 degrees a few days ago….today’s high is 59. We’ll see how that effects fishing. Fishing has been phenominal out on LOW. Drifting with a spinner & a crawler or downrigging has been the way to go. The deep mud in 30-34′ has been hot. Haven’t heard much on the river. Pike action has been okay, Sturgeon slow. Still too soon for the Walleye action to be heating up
April 20, 2010 at 7:40 pm #865484Was out there the 4/10. Also, extremely slow. Tried a few areas and ended up fishing with a small group of boats to end the day. Fishing was no different there.
