I’ts amazing how pictures can travel on the internet. The guy on the left was married to my cousin. My uncle (cousin’s dad) had sent me prints of this. He works for the National Fish and Wildlife Service.

I like to make a few comments. I’m not trying to answer anything, just throwing out some info. When fawns are born in the spring, the ratio is 51% doe fawns, 49% buck fawns. The only way to really change that ratio is for hunters to shoot a lot of small bucks. As far a the gene pool issue goes, letting larger rack bucks go to do the breeding doesn’t accomplish alot since the genes of the does have as much to do with future rack size and maybe more, than the buck. If you hunt for meat, why not shoot a doe. The meat is the same, and a small buck gets to grow. That being said, I hope regardless of what people decide to shoot, have a fun and SAFE season. There is no deer alive worth getting hurt or hurting someone over. Good Luck everyone.

Who are we kidding. I don’t care if its minerals, corn, liquid scent, water, food plots, or whatever. If you put it out in the woods, hang a stand over it and hunt there you are baiting. You may not be breaking the law, but you are baiting. I’m not saying its wrong, but lets call a spade a spade.

I’m sure this will make me unpopular, but I have to play devil’s advocate here. I hunted a lot of coon growing up, and I just have a couple of points to make. Dogs can’t read. This guy is hunting on public property that ajoins yours. The dogs don’t know where the property lines are.In minnesota you can WALK in and retreave your dog off of private property. You don’t need permission. You can’t use an ATV, and you can’t shoot the coon, but you can get your dog back. I’m not sure what the law is if you have been told to stay off though. I don’t know if this guy has good dogs, or not, but if the dogs don’t run deer, and he does it a lot, It will not bother the deer. Back when I hunted a lot, I watched deer in a field keep eating, while the dogs ran acoss the other end of the field. The resident deer were used to dogs, and payed little attention to them. My other comment is to anyone who joking or otherwise makes comments about shooting, or setting traps for this guys dogs. What do you say when people talk of banning guns. I’ts not the guns fault, it’s the people with the guns. Well it’s the same thing here. Bad behavior by this guy is not the dogs fault. They are just doing what they are bred to do. Just like a good bird dog, a good coon dog is a very valuble, and hurting them, only exposes you to legal problems. If you do something to injure or kill these dogs remember this. You are not the Local, who’s side are the local sherrif, and local warden going to take. I am not saying this guy is in the right, Just trying to show the other side. Best of luck, I hope things turn out for you.

Great photo. I saw one when I was a kid. It was a fawn, and it was right under my deerstand. I let it walk, and I never saw it again. Thanks for sharing.

I think I need to clarify my question. I realize I would not find fresh sign. What suprised me was the lack of old sign, from last fall during the hunting season. From what I have read, it is recommended to scout early in the spring, when the snow melts. That way the woods are still like they were last fall. Since I saw so many bucks, last fall I though I would find a lot of old sign. Don’t get me wrong. I would way rather see the bucks, than sign of bucks, I just was thought I would find more evidence of them.

I know this is not a real scientific test, but it is interesting to read about. Of course I have found it more effective to shoot them in the lungs.
