    @TSCTSC

Welcome back! Are you back in the States now?

I don’t think I’ll ever forget your wife shooting that .50 cal at Bills! LOL!

Unfortunately not. Hope to come back to Minnesota one day. Loved everything about it, having a boat, going fishing and ice fishing! And thanks again for arranging for us to shoot that .50 sniper rifle. That was really an experience!

Hi everyone! Its been 8 long years and so nice to read my post from so far back. Really sentimental. Thanks to google managed to find it again. Thanks to forum for not deleting it. Really had my best fishing years and perhaps even best life years in Minnesota those 3 years. I hope everyone’s doing good and I really miss my time on this forum, my boat and all the fishing I did. It’s also amazing to read the details in the post as I had forgotten nearly everything except that it was a great night. Cheers and thanks all for the friendship and advice that all of you had generously given to me which I will never be able to pay back.

You are most welcome, guys! Its been a long time since I visited the site and I thought that this would be something interesting for all to see.

My wife was the one who found the guide company and the lake thru the internet. This lake is 100% guaranteed to give a fun time for a group or a family. There are airconditioned fishing bungalows too, but they were all booked up. For the price, I think it is really value for money. You can decide how involved u are in the fishing to just reeling the fish in. In this hot and humid environment, it is really tough work. My left arm was sore and my wife’s were super sore after that. I also realized that another reason for my sore arms was from holding the fish for photography.

Nice fish, I might be heading out that way to work for three-four months next year. Maybe we can “hook” up and catch some fish together

Sure, give me a shout. I had a good guide. Just remember to leave all your ice-fishing and cold weather gear in Wisconsin. U are looking more like wearing shorts, T shirts, even singlets in this place.

Dave, for what its worth, i think i had a similar injury, did they say anything about the disk hitting your pshyatic nerve? my leg and foot hurt adtually worse than my back! they waited a week before they figured i wasnt getting any better before they did the surgery. laid in bed in traction and it hurt to watch tv.morphine helped but only for 2 hrs or so. wasnt able to even get up and go to the can….. ugggh. i guess what im trying to say is that an hour after having part of the disk removed i was able to walk outside and smoke a heater! been good for 17 yrs. it aint the end of the world if they operate. instant relief

MrFritz, u are such a bad patient….had a cigarette within an hour after surgery??!! You are very lucky u healed good. Hehe.

In any case, sorry about all your plights. But do make sure you get a good spine surgeon to look after you. Finding out from doctors (primary care etc) may be better than what you get from hearsay or word of mouth. This is because primary care doctors or other spine surgeons may have a better idea as to who is REALLY good rather than based on anecdotal experiences. In the hands of a good and experienced surgeon, there are some cases of back pain which will do predictably well after surgery. There has been a lot of advances if you go on the web. Therapeutic options are so many and they include minimally invasive, cages, gel injections etc etc etc. The best person to ask is really your spine surgeon to go thru all the options. I think any decent surgeon would not have any problems if you ask to have a second opinion. One good resource that you can get right in Rochester is Mayo Clinic itself. I am sure the spine surgeons there can advise you reasonably well. After all the orthopedic department there is ranked #1 on US News for the last 10 years??

Wow…lucky you. Good luck and have fun. Mille Lacs is a fantastic lake and has lots of memories for me. Perch in the am and huge walleyes and occasional bonus pikes at night. Do me a favour and please PLAN to fish the lake in fall!!!!!

Wow…this is really scary. I hope no one was fishing in the river or off the dam / shore when it happened. Makes you think twice nowadays when we are fishing under a bridge. Also fortunately, it was not a busy river otherwise, there would also be boat casualties. My condolenscens to all involved and indeed a great relief for all those who had near misses in this forum.

Biggest and best thing is that it has a Yammy on it. Otherwise, it really depends on your fishing style and what you want in the boat.

Do retrospective or past posts count towards the earnings?? Or do we have to start earning from now?

    James,

You wouldn’t by chance be in the market for a new truck
    would you??
    I have a 2004 (0 miles, full warranty) that I can let
go for the same price as the 2008’s. I’ll have to wait
until I get a 2008 to give you a price though.
Keep me posted, I’ll keep that 04 crated up for you!!

    Dan

I think that is provided the 08 is not a new model. For cars, there are usually minor updates every 2-3 years and major updates every 5 years.

If I may put in my 3 cents worth.

If you can afford it, you should get the VS460 or VS560. You cannot get any better value than the above. The reasons are :

    1. The only camera I know that you can use at night. You get about 1-2 feet visibility with their night lights. Most other cameras just get noisy and become unusable as soon as the sun starts to set

    2. The PAN function is really useful when you want to just scout the area. Lower the camera in with the PAN function activated and you can look all around without trying to twist your fingers off.

    3. I have heard one person tell me that cameras spook walleyes and thus Walleyes will never bite when a camera is around. I do not think that is true cos you can see videos of walleye in the Reel Weeds website. Also, I have personally seen walleyes eyeing and going for my bait using the camera. So that myth is busted.

    4. I still have not finesse my skill with the flasher, so the UW camera is still my tool that I use to catch sunfish, crappies, trout, and perch.

    5. It is easy to charge the camera. No crocodile clips. Just plug it in and you are good to go.

    6. The V560 has a remote control. I find that the remote is not so useful. But I think the PAN function in the 560 is really useful.

What did you use at the hook end of the go-devils? A fathead head? Were you jigging or just letting it sit? How far out did you have to walk to get to the target FOW? Oh, and what day were you guys out?

Yup. Would appreciate some photos of your jig and your plastic. Sounds like you did a great experiment.

I second the VS560. It is the only camera out there that I know works at night and I would not go get the motorized pod from Aqua Vue cos it is not worth the extra trouble of lugging the pod and battery and the trouble setting it up. If there is a choice, just bite the bullet and get the VS460 or VS560. Personally, I think the remote is not such a big deal, so the VS460 is quite viable. Just pop the camera into the hole and you can set the direction with the control panel on the screen. Also, you can pan with the VS560 which I actually think is quite useful.

Snobears are indeed good. One of the ultimate ice fishing vehicles. But they cost a lot more. The Wilcraft is about $10,000.

I believe that. I have been using a 5 inch hand auger I think. More than enough for my needs so far.

Thanks Derek. Any comments about the Strikemaster MAG2000 8.25 inch 2 HP for me? Like the Marcum VX-1, it appears to be the best value for the buck.

    Dean,

Good luck and all the very best for your surgery and hope you heal well and quickly!!!

BTW, does this mean that for a few weeks after the surgery he will have a weight restriction on the fish that he can catch?

I my opinion, and I am an avid but quite inexperienced ice fisherman, the flasher is the way to go. Consider this, you always need a flasher to see what is happening underneath you. But you do not always need a shelter. For example, you could rent a ice house and your shelter is not needed. Or you could fish the backwaters and a shelter is not really needed. Or if the weather is real nice, no shelter needed. But no flasher, you do not know what is going on down there. I am new to the flasher, but I think it is a sine qua non.

I guess it really depends on how much you wanna spend for one night and how far away you can afford to be. For example, you could stay at a motel in Brainerd too which is about 30-45 minutes drive. Otherwise, Derek’s suggestion sounds fine for something on the lake. Other options on the lake side include Red Door on the North End which is very clean but only has antenna TV. There is also Garrison Inn and Suites. Also nice and clean with cable TV.

Must be cool to be able to ice fish just off the frozen falls. Just wondering, how cold does it have to get to freeze a waterfall like this??
