    Mallard,

Honestly I don’t fish them. The guys that I know that fish them use a ABU 7000 and crank them as fast as they can. That’s too much like work for me….

Funny i was just reading a study on lateral line and hearing and certain sounds scare fish away, certain sounds attract. I have never fished a chatterbait and other than some southern spring fish I haven’t heard of anything caught on them. Same goes for the big Rat L Traps…. Only n the spring in the south. Can’t imagine throwing one out on a super clear lake…But on the dark water of the south… bouncing a Rattle bait off someone’s old washer works I guess.

    Rootski,

I don’t think you are second guessing at all! In fact with what you say i agree. If you have ever fished the north end of the aquarium (Mille Lacs) when the fish are up on the sand… those stupid things will look at very little if anything. But when I have had success (and others I know) it has been with top water or large bladed bucktails BURNED as quick as possible. Both of these lures create sound/vibration.

Same goes with the zoo (Big V)you can go view the nice pretty fishes sitting up on the rocks. Hit them in the head with something and they won’t eat. But make a ruckus and….

As far as the deeper “feeding” fish they are just too easy! kidding but I believe the same to be true. If you have ever seen any of the Badfish Outdoors boys in Muskie Tournaments or in the videos they are fishing countdown Depth raiders and Bulldawgs deep. But the difference is they are working the heck out of the baits. To see them on the water you wonder if you need to call 911 cause it looks like they are having fits! But in a state that supposedly doesn’t have any big fish these guys are not only putting up huge numbers of fish but multiple fish over 50″ each year. Why? Again in my opinion the sounds/vibration of how they are working the lures they throw.

On pressured fish such as the Mille Lacs fish where you have thousands of the same lure going overhead time after time I think muskies just get used to it. I have a hard time saying conditioned because I don’t think they are that smart.. But add in the same profile but change the sound and they WILL explore. Getting them to eat… see the triggering thread….yelling always works…

    Kid,

O.K. I will bite… In reading what happened with you I’m not so sure that you could do more more except maybe set the hook when “the lure itself feels momentarily abnormal” ahhahahaha!

Seriously it looks like all is right in what you are doing in my opinion. Something to try would be extreme speed/erratic retrieves. Baby depth raiders/Bulldawgs/even a bucktail really really worked hard and fast can be the ticket. Seems I remember some top water bait a few years back that did really well as a slow throwback lure did real well…. Think it was called a Beagle? try a slow topwater after all that is done and nothing else has worked. Take any walk the dog style lure and work as slow as you can. The above mentioned Weagle/ A Super huge Zara spook or a Doc work well. Pop it slowly with a second or two pause in between. This should work in even windy conditions. You will have one of the most violent strikes of your life. And the last key I can think of is yell “You spotted piece of %$^&! Your mama is a carp and your sister is doing a bullhead!” That ALWAYS makes them bite.

    Good luck!

No matter what when they do strike make sure that they didn’t get off when you think they did….right Agent?

    hahaha!

A few things you can try on every cast… Change speed and direction of your lure. Do it every cast if you can. Small burst of speeds or even a slight direction change can trigger a fish. After the follow don’t give up. You might have just made her “horny” (hahhaha hi PK) enough to eat. If you are throwing a bucktail throw it back cept this time burn it as fast as you can. Then try a topwater and vice versa. So often I think people have been preached to leave a fish alone after it follows. I disagree most of the time I will pester it to eat! With the amount of pressure on most lakes these days that fish is gonna see more lures anyways. Figure out what to do to make her eat now.

Muskies are river fish. Current can play a huge factor. Lakes have current. Where is the wind? If no wind where WAS the wind? If the wind is blowing into a spot so is current. That Musky may be waiting for food to be blown into it. So you may want to try different angles. Casting along a weedline versus to a weedline can be a huge trigger. If you know the weedline well enough try casting from on top of it to the outside.

And lastly they are stupid stupid fish and not smart one darn bit no matter what anyone says. Keep casting they will eat. It’s about all they do.

    Time on the water.

What do you need a camera for?

50″ in MN – Not all that Rare. Take a look at the tournaments and the percentages of fish over 50″ Even the metro tournament… 200 acre lake?

    50″ in WI – Rare

Canada – No fish in Canada at all.

The real rare fishermen is the one that doesn’t care the size. They are all rare.

Long story about why the melt down but let’s just say that was his second over 50 in a few days and he caught it on my rod and bait when I set it down to answer a phone call and I picked up the camera and took a break….

Some studies point to stress from hot water can be deadly. One report done by the MN DNR showed that proper handling and release were of the highest importance during this time. Playing the fish to a absolute minimum, absolute minimum time out of water (zero time out is best) water temps at midnight aren’t much different than at noon. 80 and up can be deadly. treat them right and they should be fine.

For more info on stress and Muskies send me a PM for some links.

It is true muskies are in Gull but in very very small numbers.

As Mr. Wellman has said recently French was opened to spearing. One of the reasons was that people didn’t get involved. A meeting is going to held in Brainerd concerning this issue. A hope everyone participates regardless of your stance.

Holy moly you all are acting like Musky fishermen!

Holst has it correct. Real fish but caught in the Netherlands in 2005. Look at the rain suit! Also that is why it looks a bit different as it is a different “strain” of Northern Pike. I have a buddy in Denmark that fishes for them and knows the story I asked him to drop by.

Red Lake would be the place for something like that anyways not LOTW or the Rain…

I saw this on another site and thought it to be very appropriate for this thread.

    “DO NOT FORGET ”
I sat in a movie theater watching “Schindler’s List,” asked myself, “why didn’t the Jews fight back?”

    Now I know why.

I sat in a movie theater, watching “Pearl Harbor” and asked myself, “Why weren’t we prepared?”

    Now I know why.

Civilized people cannot fathom, much less predict, the actions of evil people.

On September 11, dozens of capable airplane passengers allowed themselves to be overpowered by a handful of poorly armed terrorists because they did not comprehend the depth of hatred that motivated their captors.

On September 11, thousands of innocent people were murdered because too many Americans naively reject the reality that some nations are dedicated to the dominance of others. Many political pundits, pacifists and media personnel want us to forget the carnage. They say we must focus on the bravery of the rescuers and ignore the cowardice of the killers. They implore us to understand the motivation of the perpetrators. Major television stations have announced they will assist the healing process by not replaying devastating footage of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers.

    I will not be manipulated.

I will not pretend to understand.

    I will not forget.

I will not forget the liberal media who abused freedom of the press to kick our country when it was vulnerable and hurting.

I will not forget that CBS anchor Dan Rather preceded President Bush’s address to the nation with the snide remark, “No matter how you feel about him, he is still our president.”

I will not forget that ABC TV anchor Peter Jennings questioned President Bush’s motives for not returning immediately to Washington, DC and commented, “We’re all pretty skeptical and cynical about Washington.”

And I will not forget that ABC’s Mark Halperin warned if reporters weren’t informed of every little detail of this war, they aren’t “likely — nor should they be expected — to show deference.”

I will not isolate myself from my fellow Americans by pretending an attack on the USS Cole in Yemen was not an attack on the United States of America.

I will not forget the Clinton administration equipped Islamic terrorists and their supporters with the world’s most sophisticated telecommunications equipment and encryption technology, thereby compromising America’s ability to trace terrorist radio, cell phone, land lines, faxes and modem communications.

I will not be appeased with pointless, quick retaliatory strikes like those perfected by the previous administration.

I will not be comforted by “feel-good, do nothing” regulations like the silly “Have your bags been under your control?” question at the airport.

I will not be influenced by so called, “antiwar demonstrators” who exploit the right of _expression to chant anti-American obscenities.

I will not forget the moral victory handed the North Vietnamese by American war protesters who reviled and spat upon the returning Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines.

I will not be softened by the wishful thinking of pacifists who chose reassurance over reality.

I will embrace the wise words of Prime Minister Tony Blair who told Labor Party conference, “They have no moral inhibition on the slaughter of the innocent If they could have murdered not 7,000 but 70,000, does anyone doubt they would have done so and rejoiced in it?

There is no compromise possible with such people, no meeting of minds, no point of understanding with such terror. Just a choice: defeat it or be defeated by it. And defeat it we must!”

    I will force myself to:

    -hear the weeping
    -feel the helplessness
    -imagine the terror
    -sense the panic
    -smell the burning flesh
    – experience the loss
    – remember the hatred.

I sat in a movie theater, watching “Private Ryan” and asked myself, “Where did they find the courage?”

    Now I know.

We have no choice. Living without liberty is not living.
