I bowhunt in this area and have been aware of this deer for the past couple of years. There are a lot of rumors going around about this deer. But according to what the locals are say not much truth in most of it.
First- the deer has scored 247…a real monster, but not in the Albia Buck class, which had a gross score of over 300.
Second the DNR was on the spot within the hour and investigated the shoot. The kill was determined to be clean at the time. The shooter, apparantely has had some trouble in the past, so the convicted felon part with the shotgun wouldn’t shock me.

March 16, 2007 at 3:17 pm #549650I’m a Matthews guy, but the new Bowtech’s are definitely impressive. All of the new bows are unbelievable. The progress that these bow companies have made in the past 10 years is phenominal. The inexpensive stuff you can buy at the supercenters are many times better than what I used to kill deer with.

March 8, 2007 at 5:51 pm #546457I kind of like my rods to look like an old war horse. Lots of miles and lots of stories. Some of my rods look like they’ve about had it. I think there just getting broke in, got a little experience. I have a buddy that it just drives crazy; so I think I might keep them as rough looking as possible to watch him shake his head.
Anyway it looks like it works real well.
March 6, 2007 at 4:47 pm #545283I’ve got a few rods that I like for pitching jigs. Right now I prefer a 7ft Rogue rod in the medium light action. It’s got good feel and a ton of backbone. For vertical jigging there is only one rod for me. I have a custom built G-Loomis IMX, medium wt, fast tip. Loomis doesn’t make the Hollywood handle anymore, but that’s what I prefer so they have to come custom built.
March 1, 2007 at 7:17 pm #543410My goto jig has been the Marmuska for many years. I really like the wedgies or nuggies on the Marmuska head. The thing I have found to be the most important when fishing the horizontal jig with plastic is that it is really important to keep the presentation as close to perfectly horizontal as possible. You may have to rethread plastic and push knots around, but to me it makes a huge difference.
February 2, 2007 at 8:02 pm #531927Yeah, you can fish lost lake- there’s no doubt you’ll catch some fish. I don’t fish that area much, I like to get out on the lake. The D.N.R. drew the lake down a few years ago and put a lot of brush piles and rock piles. Its got some good structure, but can be really tough at times, but then again red hot at times. She’s a moody one.
January 31, 2007 at 5:18 pm #530682I got to agree with Craig. Hopefully the walking bacwards while encouraging the dog will do it, but you may have to force break or do a portion of force breaking the retrieve. The dog definitely needs to learn hold and be corrected when she does not. I have found putting the dog on the table is the best way to teach hold.
What I have said about for breaking or force fetching I believe to be true. I believe very strongly in this method, but keep in mind this is a puppy. Many trainers won’t even start to force fetch until a dog is a year old. It is a great method (I feel the best) for training a dog to reliably retrieve, but it takes patience and a lot of time. Many 6 month old dogs can not handle this at that age.
January 29, 2007 at 10:01 pm #529619I had to break an old roomates dog of this habit one time. It was as easy as putting newspaper on the couch. He or she, I don’t remember which would not lie on the newspaper and if the dog started to get on the couch I could hear it and holler. I know it sounds to easy to be true but it actually worked well.
January 29, 2007 at 6:21 pm #529427Thanks for the responses. I knew it was time for a new one when I got saddled between to ol boys this weekend and I was freezing my butt off and they were enjoying tropical like weather in their Fish Traps.
