I use to run beagle in Pa…the limit here is 4 per day and getting four is not that hard. I now hunt birds only but on our trip to Iowa I was thinking how much fun it would have been to have a beagle or two along. There were so many bunnies that they were bumping off our legs as we walked through some of the fields…I can understand why Iowa has the ten per day limit…Doesn’t anyone out there hunt em????

RYAN,
nice picture of the flying hen….Thats tough to get. One time I managed to snap a shot of a bird just as it was hit by the guy shooting at it but most often I end up with a picture with a blur on it or just a landscape picture.
We had a ball out there this past year. We bagged a bunch of birds and had great success on both the public lands and the few secret spots you took us to. I highly reccomend some of the small places we tried in Osceola and Emmett county…MAN were there birds there. That partial albino bird was cool! If you get a good mount I’d love to see a picture of the mount.
Well I got one more week around here before I can go out for birds. I still have one more Saturday to fill a deer tag. Nearly got one on Tuesday (a nice 10 point) but another guy shot it before I cuaght up with it.
Don’t work too hard ryan! talk to you soon.

I have a hard time answering this one…I’ve only pheasant hunted in two states…PA and Iowa…..I have hunted here in PA since I was knee high to a rooster and last season I took somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 pheasant here in PA. Most of those were stockies or game farm birds, as we only have isolated pockets of wild birds now-a-days. Hunting pheasants in Iowa was a new and exciting experience and was so enjoyable that we are making the 21 hour drive back out there to do it again this year. I guess Iowa would be my favorite “real” pheasant state BUT I have not experienced pheasants in any other mid-western state yet.

a box of shells in a weekend???? GEEESHH….
Maybe a few rounds of clay target practice during the offseason would save you in the long run…
Jeremy, the .410 is a great gun for hunting preserve birds over a pointing dog but you would have to pass up a lot of shots if using it to hunt wild birds. As long as you stay within the gun/and your limits there is no reason it won’t work just fine. You have to have a dog that likes to run down cripples though.
There is a big discussion in the PA hunting websites regarding use of the .410 for bigger birds like pheasants and even turkey.

Brittany’s and cockers the my dog choices and a remington 11-87 in 12 guage or my Sig arms 28guage are my upland guns of choice…For waterfowl and turkeys I use a winchester 1300 or a mosberg model 500 in 12 guage.
