Every year a new moron! He should have to have a special license plate stating he’s a dumba$$ like whiskey plates

Be careful what you wish for. You may be the next one with the plates, for a lot of different reasons. ‘Nice'(tongue in cheek), to see the underwhelming abundance of compassion for the guy, in this thread. Folks who live in glass houses, shouldn’t be throwing stones. Just sayin’.

I would look at the mustang brand they seem to make a superior product. We talking about you safety so don’t be to cheep. My jacket was under $400 I would think you life is worth that if you are looking down this route.

I hear you on that. My Mustang suit cost around $350, but the MSRP was much higher. It’s a chunk of cash, but worth it for me, if I have to go out on the ice when the pucker factor is up a bit. Even a regular pfd vest is better than nothing, although there is bulkiness to deal with.

Yep, get the propack. Good selection of baits in the propack to keep a guy busy on the ice. It is worth the price paid for it.

I agree it’s more personal preference than anything else. I have a red nylon braid line for the tip ups that will get used this year. I have a spool of pink fireline, which won’t get used for ice fishing, but will get used for open water trolling. Again, it’s personal preference.

I have the FL-18. Don’t have a Showdown to compare to. I am almost addicted to my Vexilars, so I have to say the FL-18.

Spend more time on the ice. I’ve got all the gear I need, and have plenty of new stuff from last year to try out still. More time. That’s it.

I have two different bib/parka sets, and a suit, to wear on the ice. I have a set of the camo Artic Armor, a set of the Striker Ice Hardwater wear, and a Mustang Survival Suit. I have sweated more in the AA wear, vs. the Sriker Ice wear, because the Striker set is vented better. It’s that simple. The Mustang suit is not really for moderate to heavy activity use, because you will sweat in it, no question. But it’s floatation properties beat the other two bibs/parkas sets, without question. I use the Mustang suit when the pucker factor goes up under certain conditions, on the ice. I stay warmer in the Striker Hardwater set vs. the AA wear, and noticed it more when it is windy. There is nothing wrong with Artic Armor wear. It was all that was available when it first came onto the market. It does make for great waterfowl hunting clothing. The Striker Ice is my preferred set for the ice. Better features, and venting. Take it for what it’s worth. YMMV.

If anyone has walkable, safe ice to fish on by Thanksgiving, it really is a bonus, compared to most years. If the current weather pattern sticks around for a few weeks, and we keep getting the cold air from the Polar regions, and Siberia, we will have a long season. Point is ice by turkey day means we have a nice long ice season, so don’t push it past the point of being safe, only because you need be the first on the ice. There will be plenty of time to drill holes, and go fishing until the end of the ice season. I’m definitely looking forward to it. Be safe, everyone.

Of the gun/bow/rod cases many of you have posted about, do any of these accomodate long rods such as 42″-45″ rods for lakers and big pike? I have a couple of ideas for a case to fit long rods, but curious as to what others have used.

is 2hp enough to turn a 10″ effectively? I thought I heard somewhere that 3hp was minimum for a 10″.

I read the same thing somewhere. A 10″ will work on a 2 hp powerhead for awhile, but the gears/gear box will wear out faster. That is what I read.

I left the lake today when the vexilar with a battery in it, shifted about 3-4 inches over from the hole during a wind gust. I was not fishing in the portable. It was brutal just being out there in the open.

Yep, had the ‘The Ballad of John Henry’, from the Royal Albert Hall CD, cranked when I was workin’ on the house. Can’t wait to see Joe and his band, next April, at the State Theater.

I came here because the atmosphere seems pretty good. I was a mod at one of those two sites a number of years ago, and left due to a problem(s) with the ownership. Another of the two sites I left was because a sponsor on the site screwed me on an order I made, I posted about it, and got thrashed for their mistake. I said screw it, and left. I guess I am not much of a ‘good ‘ole boy’. Not too many forums left for upper midwest ice fishing, that are more even keeled. Glad to see how things are here.

Got a roll of Reflectix from Menard’s last year, and had already insulated my one man Fishtrap, and had plenty left over to do the Yukon. No pics yet. May post some up later. I had to cut a strip from the roll to add to the main sheet for the Yukon. The big roll of Reflectix is 48 in., and the Yukon is wider than that. Used the aluminum tape on both houses for taping the seams, anchoring the the insulation to the sled, etc. Worked out ok, not super pretty, but got it done. Should hold in some heat while on the ice.
