I am gonna hit some central Iowa waters in the next couple of weeks because there isnt a season this far south. I havent had any luck getting a follow or anything. My guess is I need to downsize the presentation. I hear about bass tournament guys getting follows and catching some every year. I figure I will run som bass baits and just a bit larger and hopefully this works.

I dont own a 7 yet. I think I am gonna hold out another year and just use my 5 still. It never fails me. I do love the new features the 7 offers so maybe next year if the money is available. I am dumping about 3200.00 into an generation 2 HDS10 with structurescan onto the boat this year.

MCNASTY: I have a diawa saltist that I would be willing to trade. Its one season old and full of line. It has a a bit more or less than 40 inch per turn ratio on it. I have casted some big blades on it but I am looking for a slightly slower reel to cast my glide baits and twitchers. My cell is 641-840-6283. I can send a pic message off my phone when I get home if you like. I should have the reciept as well as the box. I ordered it from the musky shop. Leave me a message or text.

Photos posted. I went out for a few hours on saturday but cant open it up yet. I have 10 hours of break in time first. I trolled for a few hours till storms came in. I caught a 18″ white bass on a flicker shad and my friend Brandon caught a crappie and a smaller whit bass on a red eye shad. Good first day and already put fish in the boat. It ran very smooth on Lake Red Rock Reservior. The waves were hardly noticed and crossing wakes it barely moved as well. I am very pleased. The hull has a lifetime warranty on all welds, 5 years on motor. The guy at bass pro was pretty cool. He was like if something ever happens as long as I amstraight with him telling the truth let him create the lie to get it fixed.

So far I am hearing some good options from the members here. I will definately be hitting Rush lake and one other smaller lake just north of minneapolis for like 3 days then I may be heading north or east to wisconsin. I only have a 14 foot tracker super guide boat so really big water is out. I passed up a trip to canada based mostly on the money its gonna cost to get up there. I will make it up there eventually. Any small lake options that are a good place. I dont mind pike or tiger muskies either.

I dont know about pond fishin for walleyes…lol
I do know they are catching a lot of them below the Red Rock dam in Iowa. I went last saturday and the girl that was with me hit a nice pan fryer. The cats are hittin now as well on jigs. A guy that works at the Bass Pro here went the weekend before and they hit between 40 and 60 walleyes.

Its been around since the 70’s but its all private an nobody ever ice fished it. The same family has owned it the whole time. Its a private campground in the summertime that people can go to and fish. My dad has caught 10-12 pound albino channel cats in it during the summer but they all went back in. He has a bass mounted from there that went 8-9 pounds. I do have the pics as soon as I locate them. I had a hard drive fail and lost a ton of fishing pics and I am still trying to recover them.

Sign up for the fishing report sent to your email through the DNR page. They put out a new report weekly on thursdays on just about all of the major bodies of water and ther is even some smaller water reported on as well.

I like to start with Frostee spoons and genz worm jigs by Lindy and after a few fish if they slow down I go smaller like the rafinkee and scud bug. Drill plenty of holes and when they stop biting move around or have a few buddies along so you can keep locating them as they move. Marcum would be really handy or any sonar for that matter. I will not go out without one anymore. Good Luck and welcome to the scene.

Thats great. I got access last winter to a pond just a few miles from my house here in iowa that has monster hybrids and big perch. I even caught a channel cat through the ice there last year. I fished it during the open water and the perch and gills are all big and healthy still. I also put in 13 small channel cats and 1 little flathead. It is supposed to have walleyes in it. The guy who owns it, his wife caught one around 22 inches on a crawler on the bottom but I dont know how to locate them or catch them through the ice any ideas?

There was a guy and his son wading in the water and fishing for smallies and they were catching a bunch of small 1/2 to 1 pounders so I have them to thank for this fish. I gave them space and stayed off the rock so they could fish and I caught it on slightly deeper rocks in the water.

Nice results at pleasant creek. I have been to MN one time to try so far. Fished Forrest and Rush Lake. The guy that took me out hooked up 2 while I was there but both got away. I have been spending my winter making my own lures and leaders for the first time as well as Ice fishing. I have a new lure idea that I made now I just need to test it out. Thanks for the input on where to go this year in Iowa.

I just got a Diawa Saltist from the Musky Shop and I cant wait to use it this year. It has a 47.2″ line retrieval per turn. Its just a bit faster than the Shimano Trinidad 16N but I like the fact that there is a levelwind on it and its about 150.00 cheaper.

I had the same problem with my LX 5. I noticed it after moving to a few different bodies of water and it always appeared at the same one. I figured out you get some of this when the battey is low. I always ended the day or night at the same place cuz it was close to home. I started there once and it was gone so I came to the conclusion that it was just a low battery. I drain it pretty low everytime before I charge it just to extend the ussage a bit. You may try this as well.

I was wondering if someone has compared these two products and could give me the pros and cons of each. I am looking to purchase one or the other. Any info would be appreciated.

Any reason you’ve eliminated The MarCum line of flashers. Its well worth your time to compare price to feature; and a ton of other things for that matter.

I can give you a review of the ice 45 and Fl-18/20, but its nowhere near complete until you atleast see MarCum’s features along side.

I don’t mind it getting so off topic and all. Some stuff is entertaining to read. After doing plenty of reading and research on all the flashers for a few days I made my decision. I called all of the companies directly and asked questions as well. I went to Scheels because they carry all 3 units and could look at all of the fetures. I talked to the sales guy at scheels and got his opinion and it was pretty clear from looking at the shelves that I was getting a Marcum LX5. They sold more often over the other brands and seemed very reliable. The salesman never had a return come in that he had seen.He told me I was pretty lucky when I called them first and had him hold one of each so they were not sold out. They had 4 LX5’s when I called and a few hours later I came in and the only one left was the one I had held. They had just sold the last one 5 minutes prior to me arriving. Some will be dissapointed and others may be glad on my choice nut I did plenty in research and am happy with what I got. I can’t wait to get on the ice now that I am done with all the christmas gathering I had to attend. Thank you to everybody who posted on this topic. Maybe we will see each other on the water.

I caught my first cat through the ice last season on small live minnows. After I caught it all the fish shut down. A day or so later on same water my brother in law caught one and same thing happened. Anybody know why this is? I have read an article a few years back in the Iowa Fish and Game magazine about a guy from Illinois that makes a catfish dip bait called WD3. The whole article was using it throught the ice with the foam covered trebles they sell and they caught a ton over a day span. I think it can be purchased at gander mtn. around the Iowa and Illinois area. Through my experiance, I bought some years ago at a fishing show. and used it in the summertime and never caught a thing on it. I moved around a year later and must have left it behind. I never got to try it in the winter or on very many different bodies of water. I guess if you wanted to try it and test it yourself if you can find it, its up to you. Good Luck

Thanks for all of the information you guys have posted. It has definately helped. I can get a Hunninbird at the new Bass Pro in altoona iowa. Scheels has the vexilars and I think sportsmans has the marcum. I will just have to go in and view them all to really make my choice.

I have used an FL 8 that is my dads and it works great. I am a little curious as to how useful the zoom feature is and how the interferance is between the two as well. If he uses his vexilar and i were to use a humminbird in close proximity would they affect one another.
