A co-worker said he was up there and never seen it so empty. Maybe people are finally getting it,but I don’t believe that.

I agree with Paul H.The fish still spawn, but the sucess isn’t there[Don’t tell the female fish!].I always start looking for areas a fish might spawn and then progress to food sources.

The problem seems to be that of forage consumption.
A 6 pound walleye eats more forage than two 3 pound walleyes.

I disagree with this statement,1 fish only has 1 system to keep functioning properly,so it doesn’t need to eat as much as 2 fish. A 6 pound walleye will generally try to eat a larger fish for a meal than 2 smaller fish can eat.

As an example I caught and harvested a 21″ walleye that had eaten a 11″ northern pike,if a fish that size eats another fish that big wouldn’t a 26″ fish even eat a bigger meal?

Do they continue to open them up after the close of the game fish season for pannies only? I noticed that on the lakes already listed liberalized fishing ended on the 23rd. Does anyone know? I’m not planning on participating either way but I am curious.

Most of the time lakes are only open for a short time period, the thinking is that the fish are generally dead after that time or they have found a place with enough oxygen to make it until spring.

Putting it in the absolute nicest terms that I can, it is because their arguement was misguided at best… People are not keeping any more SMB than they do on any other body of water

We stayed at Father Hennipen State park for 5 days around the 4th of July, and there were more smallmouth bass in the fishcleaning shack than there were walleyes.

As far as the smallies chasing all the walleyes off the rocks, that is b.s.,we caught all off our walleyes on shallow rocks, except for the walleyes we caught in 8 feet of water in the weeds.

For instance wouldn’t it be silly for the DNR to change the walleye regulations to allow only 1 fish over 28″ to be kept? That’s essentially what the regulations for smallmouth were set as before… Now they are on equal ground with walleyes allowing for some harvest but still requiring release once they reach their prime breeding age.

If the walleye and smallmouth regulation is on equal ground as you state; How come one fishes’ limit is 6 and the other fishes’ limit is 2?????????????????

Due to a lack of appropriate habitat and forage to sustain viable populations of tiger muskies, as well as limited angling pressure and fish cost and availability, fisheries staff recommended dropping tiger muskie stocking on these five lakes.

    Hmmmmm . . .

    +1

Everytime I fished a couple of these tiger lakes there were others also targeting tigers.Limited angling pressure comes from the very small parking lots, imho.

Mine did that last year at the end of the season. I called Marcum, my brother dropped the unit off on his lunchbreak and sat in the parking lot,20 minutes later they brought the unit out to his car.It works great this year,so far.

Kooty, I have a map that shows the water level of Pelican lake at two different time periods and there is quite a difference. If people do not believe the lake is holding more water than historical, can someone explain why trees grew in that lake at one time but not in other lakes?

I have not seen this point brought up yet. I can not believe a guide would kill as many fish on what could be called scouting trips as RD does, legal yes,but I would think a guide would want to protect the resource that is putting money in his pocket and food on his table more than that.

Is there a good reason I cant musky fish in the winter? I release them anyways. Dumb law

The reason is because; people who were not “muskie fishermen” would catch and kill muskies in the winter so “muskie fishermen” got the rule changed so the season ends before ice fishing season begins.

I put a slip float on the line[no stopper] and then tie a drop shot rig. The float helps keep it vertical and aids in locating the line. The drop shot part keep the bait near the bottom.Works decent from shore when the depth varies quite a bit.

I have been at Mille Lacs the last 2 years the last weekend of September and nets have been set same spots both years. I am sure that unless the weather would affect the time frame they try to keep the dates the same.
The water temp. was only 1 degree warmer this year so I would not think that would have affected anything.

Five of us,in two boats, fished Friday night and Saturday night. The bite was better for both boats on Friday[and less other boats to avoid]. In my boat my daughter and I had 11 fish boatside,8 from 16″-19″ and the other 3 were 21″-23″. Saturday we had 8 fish an 18″,19″, 4 between 20″ and 21″ a 23″ and my daughters PB a 26.5″

I arrived home from work at 1am and went down to the garden and the grass already had ice on it. It is going to freeze hard out here in s.w. Wright Co.

The problem with the tagging{besides many] is there are lots of lakes that have invasives in them that the D.N.R. are not aware of yet.I have been on many small bodies of water that have milfoil in them, but they are not on any list anywhere.

Yes, there is several lakes in the area that were on the news today, “no wake anywhere on the lake”.
They said people will be ticketed if they are going faster than “idle speed”.
It sucks, but is supposed to be lifted in 5 days.

It’s to bad the MNDNR is shutdown (except enforcement). Record would not have counted regardless. Congrats to the angler and the release.

RangerSki, why do you say it would not count because of state shutdown, there is not a time limit to get a fish certified. A fish must be weighed on a certified scale,[like at a meat market if it that big] witnessed, and then taken to a fisheries office to have the species verified and get the offical form to register it.

I know quite a few years back when I had a 15 horse on the back of a 14′ Lund going at half throttle I caught quite a few walleyes. The first time I tried that, I was at a lake that everybody but one guy was livebait riggin,so this guy is flying along and netting fish often. I figured he was getting pike but figured that was better than nothing.I stayed out in the lake a long ways away to get the speed down than put on a Rapala and was really surprized as I caught one walleye after another.I have know way of knowing the actual speed but I am preety sure I had to be in the 5-6 mph area.

Oh yeah, the Wi.D.N.R. upped the walleye limit from 2 to 3 not quite to 4 or 6 yet.

I am not sure I get the logic of some people.
Is fishing such a terrible past time that you must be in a hurry to get a limit?
Can we not enjoy being outdoors without making it a race to a limit? I could be just doing it wrong ,but then I would have been done in less than 2 hours this morning, instead of watching the night turn to day and the wildlife wake up.[by the way I still only kept 5 walleyes]
Yes, rarely do I deep hook a walleye trolling cranks, but pike on the other hand.
Also, on a lake such as Mille Lacs 2 lines and delayed mortality factors the slot would get quite small which would be very hard on tourism!
