    Watcha talkin’ about Willis?

Ha Ha Just kidding. I think I understand what you are saying. I tried to figure out different ways to measure but I think the best way to do it is to fish like crazy and try to catch her again and measure her.

I seen a few boats on this lake now and they are pounding the water pretty heavy. It dismays me because I heard one group talking to the other how they each got a “ten” pound fish. That makes three fish. Then I heard how great they tasted but there was so much they fed the rest to the dog. Now here they are out again trying to get some more meat.

I just hope they enjoy the fishing because it isn’t going to last on this lake. It’s a mile wide and 2 miles long. It can only hold so many fish and a big reason why catch and release is so vital.

    Thanks.

My first and formost thought was to hurry and get a few pictures and get her back into the water. Just want to note also that I never use a net on these fish. I use heavy enough gear (15 pound fusion with a 10 pound mono leader about 8 feet long) so the fight isn’t to strenuous on the fish. I don’t want to split their fins. It’s really nice to know she lives right out in front of the house and maybe I’ll have another crack at her.

It’s amazing when you learn a lake. I have been here 11 years and pretty much know where they will be in different seasons and water temps. But they are walleye and will confuse ya every now and then.

The big sucker minnow bite is pretty much over and I think it’s time to go a little deeper and start with the jumbo leeches. Problem is that the big small mouth like those to! (I like smallies also!)

I think the lettering on the dime says it all about this style of jig. Very basic design that appears to do well in current and still waters. Looks easy enough to bulk up with plastic or live bait. Looks like it can be used for anything.

I therefore dub this jig. The Liberty Jig.

    Thanks Riverfan,

I knew the impact on water fowl, I was just wondering the impact on the tackle manufacturers there.

    Anyone know?

    Hi Jack,

Yes it’s been awfully cold up here! No snow but good for ice. Right now you can skate for miles and miles! Never seen it like this before. Can’t even run a sled without burning out the sliders on it. Fishing has been pretty good. There is an awsome brook trout bite going on and also some large walleye (9-11 lbs) being reported. I just have to get one like that! My biggest is only 8 lbs so far this winter.

    Thanks again all!

I just came back from Whitefish Lake. A good solid six inches of black ice and little snow made the walk out easy. I got out there late so I tried for walleye. Best first ice trip I ever had on this lake. All walleye (28) were between 16 and 22 inches long. I had a hard time finding threee walleye under 18 inches. (only allowed one over 18 inches).

    T’was a great night.

All I gotta say is a slug at 200 yards? At 89 and he hit the horse at 200 yards with a slug and he thought the horse was a deer? If he could hit it at 200 yards with a 12g slug I would assume that he could identify the animal with a rider on it!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi DaveB,

You are on the right track. I hear hunters calling in elk that were mistaken for moose during the proper hunting season. (Ontario) The hunters get fined and are suspended from hunting the rest of the season and possibly the next years season also.

Now I know that calling in and being honest is the moral thing to do but the Wardens fine them anyways. Main reason being is first to be sure of your shot and animal identification.

The above is why a lot of game up here goes to waste. Accidents happen but people realize that if they report themselves they will lose the priviledge of hunting.

I’m not sure what I would do if it happened to me……….

    Ahhh Ya gotta love it!

I called Tinman today and he was using 80 lb test and still took him an hour to reel his in. After a quick picture he let her go. Did the gentlemen let there’s go? Also I noticed they had a nice eater on the stringer….I gotta get a walleye fix soon myself!

    Hello Mr. Willowcat,

Yes I have fished Kashabowie. I used to have my camper on that lake for five years in a row!

I think I still have a map of it around here somewhere.

    Do you fish that lake?

You gotta get out and try it Rivereyes. The one I got took 40 minutes on 24 pound fusion line with a large spinning reel with a 9 1/2 foot rod. It was jumping all over the place. Great fight.

    Sore back and arms to!

I had one heck of a year fishing.

I don’t know how many walleye I have caught over 30 inches. It was a year of pigs.

I also caught the biggest fresh water fish of my life! Do you guys have sturgeon in the big M?

Here it is! We were fishing for smallies. He just kept reeling in his jig and worm and dropping it to the bottom and reeling it back up. Just repeated the process. Then the rod just doubled over! My house is the next house to the right of the dock in the pic.!!!

    Hi Guys,

    Glad you liked the cartoon.

I read all the posts and was thinking that in light of all of the P.C. people that are out there I would like to apologize for the likeness of an Muslim looking person being chased down by an American Eagle.

Now the reason for the Muslim looking person looking the way he is…………IT’S BECAUSE TERRORISTS ARE COWARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They will not dress in uniform so they will blend in and cannot be easily recognized in a field of battle! The can shoot, plant a bomb or anything and walk away and stand in the crowd to watch! It freaks me out that they claim that they are stout believers in their religion and will shave their beards and take off the turban to walk un-noticed in a crowd.

On side note………..maybe the character in the cartoon is Bin Laden…….he ain’t found yet and with enough money…or holding a gun to a plastic surgeon’s head changed his appearance.

On a fishing note…I’m going for lake trout this morning…..

My best memory was when my two year old boy drove the boat for his first time. I didn’t know it at the time but a friend in the front of the boat snapped a picture of it. He blew it up and framed it really nice and gave it to me for Cristmas.

Maybe I’ll scan it to show it to you guys.

Is this the kind that you have to create pressure by hand just like a coleman stove?

How does the powder paint work? Just dip the jig in? Does the jig have to be hot first? I have looked at the powder paint but there was no instructions on how to use it.

    Thanks for the tips kreading.

I try to keep my costs down. I’m not selling them. I’ll use the tire weights but I do have access to some quality lead. I have my system set up on a wood work bench with a grate and sheet metal in between to avoid the flare ups.

What kind of paint do you use?

I use a coleman stove and a cast iron ladle. I just put the weights in there and melt them. I pick out the steel crimps and then I use a brass rod. The junk left on top of the lead sticks to the brass like a magnet. Just give the rod a tap and the junk falls into a can.

I used to have some lead pipe but I ran out of that.

I use a lot of tube jigs so I don’t paint the heads. I was looking at that powder paint stuff. Have any exprience with that or other types of paint?

Hey no problem Steve! Kinda figured you were.

Those fish were all caught within 100 feet of my dock. The lake is very deep. Average depth is 90 feet. Main forage is cisco. These walleye were caught on yamamato tube jigs. I always match the color of the jig to the bottom of the lake. I just go into shallow water, drop the jig to the bottom and look away. I look back and if I have to search for it then I know I have the color to use. Most all forage will camoflage itself to the type of water/bottom of the lake.

The lake is used for recreational boating and everyone figures it’s fished out. I love it when people give up and move on! It’s really nice that when my kids are old enough to reel they will get a fish of a life time.
