What is wrong with grilling a 15lb cat?

Nothing. Enjoy your mercury induced health problems.

You should also make a special video presentation on how to net the floaters 4 at a time. They’re fresher that way when you fillet ’em.

Well, be serious now, that big’ol bass you picked off the river floating dead and stuffed for a tree topper must come close?

Sorry that was a touchy subject, but maybe it’ll make one or two people think twice next time.

I’ve angered some people, so I think I’ll walk away and let you guys enjoy the forum without my input.

    Take care.

That’s a rather extreme opinion. I don’t sense any anger at all. What I do sense is people finally stepping off a second and looking at what they have done in the past that may give them reason to pause before going on and trying to talk with a size 12 foot in their mouth.

Ralph, I personally thought it was a good point.

    EDIT:

Quoting myself, now this won’t be pretty…

Then again, after some, ahem, insight, I can see where the anger comes from. Cheap shots in the form of PM’s should be directly reported to an Admin or Mod.

    Some of you suck.

So if rules can’t be enforced why create another rule?

Oh give me a break. Patronizing me with that isn’t much fun. You know what my point was.

And yes, I agree that getting two states DNR depts. to work on this would be an uphill battle.

However… if enough of us hollered, yelled, and stomped feet to get enforcement improved to enforce the law that is already in place, these fish can be protected

Doubtful that will work because of one very limiting reason. Money. Without shelling out another truckload of money, supplied by guys like you and me, they do not have the resources to do this. Manpower is very short because of this reason, and this reason alone. It isn’t because they wouldn’t have enough qualified people to do it.

Read this link to the bobber shop registration form under rules. bobber shop catfishing contest entry form Well thanks to that video we can see that the rules were definatly broken and many flats harmed or killed.

We should all call bobber shop and the DNR both to tell them about this abuse of our resources.

Erm, that wasn’t the Bobber Shop tourney where the fish were belly up. It was the Belle Plaine one as clearly stated.

EDIT: And this goes to show that clear and level-headed thinking needs to be in place before pointing fingers at anyone. You won’t get much response from rule makers either without some solid and well planned statements. Hot heads never get far, but they do get ignored.

    A few things…

Define “small” streams. Twenty to thirty foot across – max?

And what do you use for bait when trotlining? Could be the reason flats avoid them.

So much for relativity, eh? Well the TX. boys don’t seem too worried about it yet. Maybe things are different down there. Still, this feed the <insert local villa> mentality will take its toll some day.

Then they’ll move up here and discover we have a whole lotta bigger fish waiting to feed the neighborhood….

I think I’m gonna go bullhead fishing. I need bait.

    PS: Tim_

I did get the fantasy thing you were mentioning. But the fact remains, that unless those two fish (flatheads now) are disposed of in a manner within the confines of the law (no wanton waste like turning into rose food), you simply cannot take another limit of fish until they are gone. Or rather, you can add as long as you do not exceed. That was my point.

So what’s the ratio of trotliners to polebender types there?

I don’t think a seal eats that much fish.

The posession limit for flatheads in Minnesota is 2 with one over 24″. I’d have my limit every night if I kept fish.

You’d also be busted with the way you worded that. Possesion. Not daily limit. Is two. Unless your are eating 40 pounds of flatty a night, you are in the wrong.

I honestly don’t think we’ll ever see it get as “popular”..

Sorry to burst your bubble, Wade. But catfish are one of the most fished for species in the US. Though most catfishers *probably* don’t give a rats *** about whether they are popular or not.

EDIT: Unless I misread that for the regional viewpoint.

Kid caught a decent channel on cut bullhead lastnight. Head like a cement block but kind of skinny yet. Looked post spawn. And I had a sneaky SOB wait until literally the last second to take a poke at my bullhead. I was done loading boat and getting rod out of holder. Engaged the reel and KABLAM! Rod almost went swimming. Lucky I have cat-like reflexes.

Anyway, same thing that happened to you, Larry, happened to me. Hook popped out. I had a rather large 12/0 Daiichi circle on and it sure felt like it buried. Oh well, try again tonight and see what my luck will be like then.

    Nice fish btw.

Probably is common, just not many are in the right place at the right time to witness.

I had channels picking off mayfiles right beside the boat a week or so ago and they would NOT touch anything but them. Figures. I have fish surrounding me and not one willing to bite.

My first flathead was a little fella about 4-5 lbs. from the Minnesota river right at the bridge in Chaska. I was trying to catch a walleye when this thing smashed the bejebus out of a spinner/leech three way rig. Don’t recall year, but it was before I had any kids.

I remember thinking to myself that the pattern on its body was one of the best camo patterns I had ever seen (duck hunter in me was taking note at that moment).

The reason bullheads are so good is their tenacity. They kick for hours with little input from you, and stay that way for a long time vs. say a sucker or some other victim.

My favorite flathead line: Hey baby, wanna see my bullhead? ba da boomp

Other than that, PP #65. Haven’t had issues with it yet.

    Brian,

Some day your FW will be doing this.

You can count on many nights of harrrrhahahahrhaaaahhhahaha when she gets bold enough to do so. Mine rarely lets me forget…

Though I did get last laugh when the fish sort of smacked her up (reason fish is a little dusty).

    Larry,

I did some more digging at DNR site and found .pdf’s of the river online here.

Also can request this guide thru DNR information services and they will send out a printed copy. Check here.

The pdf files are sort of a pain because they do not show up altogether as one. But, it beats waiting for a map via snail mail.

I use a plastic storage tub at home (*currently) with an over the edge aquarium filter. Filter material has been replaced with open cell type foam on intake tube. aka: artificial sponge.

In the boat it is close to what is mentioned here. Though I modified my pump a bit. I axed the silly screen on the bottom of the pump altogether and removed/replaced uplift tube with a few pieces of pvc and garden hose for more flow and less clog. Bullheads, and even suckers, will survive in ambient temps for several hours this way. However, like mentioned before, cooling water will improve odds of victims survival greatly.

    * Next plan of attack for the home situation is to get a 150 gallon Rubbermaid water tank (farm stores) for in the garage and a commercial style bubbler. They’re out there, you just need to look for one. And then I believe most of the critters tossed in will survive for a week or two without much attention.

Currently I can keep bullheads in the garage for two weeks without much loss. It does pretty good this way.
