I will also say Thorne Bros Sweetheart rod. I have two and wouldn’t fish for walleyes with anything else. They are usually 10% off at the Ice Fishing Show in St Paul in December.

We just canceled our reservation on Winni this morning. The owner allowed us to keep our spot for next year, without loss of any money. I think they know there is really nothing to do up there is the lake is frozen.
What’s a centimeter????
I would recommend using the Bombers-they are great and should get to the depth you need pitching and retrieving.
50 feet over the centerline is pretty far over, isn’t it? The river isn’t that wide up there. We saw most people getting stopped who were obviously well onto the Canadian side. If you apply for a RABC pass do you have to have check into Canada or could you just put your boat into the water on US side and fish the Canadian side? Can you also apply for a fishing license through mail/online?
That video was shot on Saturday it looks like? You should have seen Friday!! Three hour wait to launch-woke up to 7 degree temps. Boats were frozen to trailers and there was only one ramp open on the river that morning!!
Mike,
Let’s say you have to decide by tomorrow cause you have to take a day off work and beg your wife to let you go!!!
Neither one-they are going to win or lose based on their run game and defense. Winfield is the heart of that D. He’s the toughest guy on the field everytime he steps foot.
OK-Another question along the lines of this thread. If you had to peg a weekend right now to plan a trip what weekend would you pick based on current conditions and current forecasts (don’t worry I know you can’t predict the future-I won’t get mad at anyone).
Weekend of March 30th?
Weekend of April 6th?
Weekend of April 13th?
Just your guess/gut feeling.
How about hiring a guide on the particular body of water you wish to target and be specific that you want to target big fish. Might be a little more expensive but much faster.
Is there a link on this site of guides for the River?
An apology is in order from me. I had hastily tried to make a tax joke having just read a startribune article about Gov. Dayton and his desire to start taxing more and more especially online items as well as our President always reminding us that we must ‘pay our fair share’. I realize now that I should not have tried to use sarcasm without making it blatantly more obvious. I mean this site no harm-I enjoy it thoroughly and have found guides, sold/bought items and look forward to using it more. I mean jolly ann no harm-I have done business with them in the past and look forward to doing more business with them in the future. I apologize for being the guy that instigated some fury here-that was never my intention and I hate being ‘that guy’ or hi-jacking a thread. I would have posted sooner but was unable to. I am sorry. Thank you for your consideration guys and for being a great source of local fishing information.
So is jolly Ann and this site promoting that you shouldn’t pay sales tax on online purchases despite the fact that the law states differently? You should really be paying your fair share!
Have the 20 gage for the last two years. I would say very accurate gun. Had some major problems with it last year misfiring on me and lost a good buck due to it. I did shoot a nicer buck at 175 yards this year though and didn’t have any misfiring problems. Tried to keep it much cleaner this year. I wouldn’t hesitate on buying it. Also consider the Savage 220-cabelas has them with 3×9 scope for a decent price. My dad got one this year and is happy with it
Anyone else contact their legislators? In case you live in District 50-this should be eye opening. My legislator voted against it for ‘tourism and wolves’. Spread the word.
Senator Barb Goodwin (DFL) District 50 Votes Against Fee Increase
If you are in (St. Paul) District 50-Vote Against Barb Goodwin in upcoming elections and make sure to email her to let her know so. Here is her email to me:
“I agree with you and feel that we do need to fund our natural resources and recreational activities but I voted against the bill due to the size of some of the increases. I’m concerned that the increased fees for both residents and non-residents will take a big bite out of our tourism, the main economic engine for much of the state. I also voted against it because of the wolf hunting provision. I have had an enormous amount of opposition to this provision due to the fact that the wolves have just been taken off the endangered species list.”
Apparently wolves are more important than slightly increasing fees for our natural habitat.

First time in this new stand that I put up about a month earlier. Later saw several videos of this deer chasing does on the moultrie about 40 yards from the stand. In south Koochaching County, MN. Like it was said earlier-not too many big boys up there from high wolf population. The first nice buck that I have seen in many years of hard hunting. My nicest buck ever. I don’t know how big but it is going on the wall.
So, if you are driving 80MPH in a 55MPH road in the middle of the night and no one is around, it is ok? I would say that their job is to enforce the law, not to interpret it. You are wrong, let it go.
I stayed at McKinnley Park last year on Labor Day wkd. Good area, also near there is Hoodoo Point Campground which is nice also. I can’t speak too much for resorts though.
I know there are alot of reefs around arneson’s. Where are the bridges, knight, reefs, flats, etc?
I’m going to say yes. The auger hung up a bit in 24″ of ice right at the end of the hole. But, I know that the blade wasn’t really sharp either. I know it hasn’t happened in the past.
Do you find the software usefull? I have been thinking of purchasing but always think that i might not use it.
Did well last weekend. We were deeper. The fish were very tight lipped, but seemed to bight mid-day. jigging only induced the aggressive fish, which were few and far between.
Don’t say there is no night bite. We caught a couple nice walleyes after 7:00 pm last weekend. It certainly shuts down, and some will think it is not worth it, but you can sometimes entice an ‘eye to bite if you’re jigging at night. Something to think about if you are in a sleeper. They are usually nicer ‘eyes too.
I haul a really old pull behind camper used for ice fishing (4500#+) and use 18″ minimum as a rule of thumb. Had no problem up on lake of the woods three-four weeks ago. I haul with a Tahoe-no problems (yet).
The only thing I don’t like about my rod is the electrical tape-doesn’t feel right on the handle.
We actually went between those dates and were fishing the 30 and 31st.
Ended up going out of Morris Point last weekend with a wheel house and had in the neighborhood of 18-20″ of ice. Set up in 21ish feet and had good success. Seems like most people were having the same luck.
Thanks guys, I was able to find the location of the different maps you were refering to. I haven’t looked at the contours or detail yet, but that looks like what I needed to do. Thanks again, Josh. Good fishing everyone.
Looking to bring a wheel house out in a week or so. Sounds like that might be a possibility. Good to hear the fishing has been solid.
