Live target either blade bait or jiggin rap type bait. These baits will cover you if the fish are looking for a horizontal presentation. The LT is for aggresive fish or calling them in. The blade bait or jiggin rap is for a more subtle horizontal presentation.

A 6″ thin salmon spoon for a reaction bit and a small flutter spoon or buckshot type spoon for a more subtle verticle presentation.

These 4 types of presentations will cover you on Lake Winnipeg.

as always it was great seeing you guys again. You might want to lookl at a Red River and Lake Winnipeg trip in Dec. For big fish

One tip that works for me with the Rap’s is to cut off the front hook. It gets caught on the ice in the hole and you will lose fish because of it.

Fishing barbless will not cost you a fish. Steady preasure is the key. You will lose fish by bumping their heads on the bottom of the hole with 4ft. of ice though.

Lake Winnipeg is shaping up to have a great ice season this year. Lots of bait in the south Basin of the lake. I should be ice fishing in a couple of weeks or so, and will post reports.

I would leave after 10 minutes if no takers. I carry a number of rods rigged different and they would get a 2 minutes each. If no biters I’m out of there. I will even leave biting fish if they aren’t big enough or active enough. I will keep the spot in mind and may come back if I can’t do better. I always thought that “to acheive excelence you have to leave mediocrity behind”.

The Red produces large fish in Dec. Lake Winnipeg produces large Walleye from Dec. to mid-March. We don’t have much for laker fising close by. I would suggest NW Ontario for lakers. I would talk to Calvin Svihel from this site. If you search the ice fishing reports he did one on Lake Winnipeg last March.

My web site for ice fishing is http://www.indigodestinations.com
you can also check out “Lake Winnipeg Ice Fishing” on Facebook for updates.

If your going to the St. Paul Ice Fishing show I will be there in Booth #406.

yes I guess I am spoiled. Not to many days I can’t catch at least 25 walleyes that average 4 lb’s. On a good day you can catch 100. Real good chance of catching a fish over 10lb’s and we do catch a few over 15lb. every year.

The bite on the lake is good early. The Red produces some big fish early and is easy to fish. It is possible to fish both in the same day. The Red was not too good this fall. Water was very high and dirty.

We have great laker fishing at Gods and lots of my guests use fly fishing equipment especially for our brook trout.

I don’t think you can beat Lake winnipeg for numbers and trophy potential. Our fishing stays consistant from Dec. till the end of March as well.

I usually fish Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba Canada. Sometimes the Red river in Dec.
