The bite on Devils Lake is usually hot the entire season. The difference is they move deep in the mid season (jan-feb) Come March they tend to move a little shallower. When I say deep i mean it can range from 30-50 fow. March is usually a good time for perch as the become more and more aggressive. The walleye bite is usually red hot as well in March. If you are going to target perch all I can say is be ready to drill and move to find them but once found. It is a BLAST. Dont be afraid to try right in the flooded timber in March. I have had really good luck fishing flooded timber in March.

Just to add a few points. Like mentioned before. LW is a huge body of water. Be prepared. Structure is pretty much not existant up there. One thing to try is fish pressure ridges. I have caught my biggest fish on LW right around pressure ridges.

LW is a “stained water” lake. If you want to fish by the mouth. That usually means 3+ miles at least out from it. If you can find the transition point from the stained water to clearer water you will have beeter luck. Water clarity/pressure ridges is what I call LW structure.

The idea of being mobile and drilling holes can not be stressed enough. Move, Drill, Move, Drill…and move some more. you will have way more success this way.

Alcohal…..NOT LEAGAL on any Manitoba waters. Leave it in the truck or at the room! You will get ticketed and they are strict on alcohal violations of any sort.

Like mentioned before. Your first fish might be a 28″ and you may think its “the one”….measure it. Take lots of pictures and release it. The opportunity to catch a bigger one is very good. Replicas are GREAT. TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES. The coloring of these walleyes are something you wont see again outside of LW. If it was dark, you’d think they would glow. they are something else.

It is a trip you will do year after year from here on out. It is a TRUE world class fishery.

Devils lake has been GREAT so far this season. Ice conditions seem to be pretty steady in the 10-12″ range. Most small bays have 14″+. Perch as well as walleyes have been quite “friendly and hungry” As far as walleye. I almost always start with a rippin rap and rairly have to change from that. Perch, I typically start with a small slender spoon and if that doesn’t work or they look but cdont commit I switch to a plastic and usually that’s the ticket.. Just about any small spoon with a minnow head seams to be working for the perch recently. Good luck and enjoy.

I purchased the Honda earlier this fall. I used it all week this week in the well below zero temps. (coldest -15*) After priming it 2 times with choke on….two pulls. It has never taken more than 3 pulls to start this baby. It does take a couple minutes to warm up but dont they all. Im at least 200-300 holes with this auger and I have not one bad thing to say about it. I would recomend it to anyone!
