Thats a very nice fish, congrats. Farm ponds are definately your best bet for trophy bass in Iowa. My biggest largemouth to at 22 inches 6.5 pounds came out of a pond too. Also, good job releasing the fish. Its very important to release trophys so they can spawn and I wish more people would.

Hey Husky. I guess I haven’t fished it recently but I got a chance to go out there for an hour on April 23 with a friend. My friend stayed there longer then I did and ended up catching a nice crappie and some small eyes around 12 inches. The only fish I caught was an 8.7 pound carp on a light pole and 6lb line. Not exactly what I was going for but it took almost 4 min. to land and the fight was fun. We were fishing from shore on the East side.

I got the PM sent with no problems so thats good. Your completely right about that smallie too Ryan. There will definately be a lot of smallie fishing going on this summer. I would like to get out more this spring as I think the fishing would be better for a larger fish. I’m still looking to top 20″ since last year the best I did was 18″ but it felt like a monster on ultra light so thats always fun. I might try Spirit Lake more this year too even though I love all of West Okoboji’s structure and clear water. Maybe if you have some free time this spring we could go chase some smallies again Ryan. Anyway I better get going. Take it easy guys.

Thanks for the info guys. I figured the best fishing would be in the river but I like fishing lakes so much better I was hoping to find a decent one. Basically they are all terrible though. I have a friend up here who knows someone with some private ponds which would be awesome if I could get a chance to fish some of those but I dont know if its going to happen. If I can figure it out I’ll send ya a PM bigesox and if it doesn’t work I’ll drop ya an e-mail or somethin. Anyway, thanks again for the info guys. Take it easy.

Thanks for showing the pics Ryan. It’s pretty cool that they open the Hatchery up to the public like that. Its always awesome seeing large fish up close like that. I always liked the exhibits and fish tanks at Cabelas and BassPro Shops etc.
