I’m a big time big water hunter and we usaully put around 14 dozen dekes out and no matter what time of the year it is we use all of our dekes and we have woodys, mallard, pintail, red head, bluebills, teal, and even coot decoys.( I got the coot dekes free from some friend and they work great because the coot go right to them and then you have live dekes for other ducks.) So I think it’s more on up to you to decide what you like to put out. You just have to remember that when you see those raffs of ducks out on those lakes, there is always more then one brand of duck in them, so they natually mix together too!

September 4, 2004 at 8:59 pm #320049Hey 99 really isn’t all that bad but I’ve seen alot better at herders. I hunt the snow geese every year and I think there isn’t no better bird to hunt because they are a very smart goose and are alot more challenging.

October 22, 2003 at 11:21 pm #792My group switched to open water about 3 years ago and have learned alot about it already! The most important thing to remember about open water hunting is there is never to many decoys! Now when it comes to decoy set up we found that a big J formation seems to work the best. Just make sure to leave a pocket for them to land in. We put our lucky duck in the middle of the J but just closer to land about 15 yards from us! And trust me if you catch on to the open water you will love it and never go back to those puddles!

October 1, 2003 at 3:12 pm #402Gator I’m sorry, I have no way to post any pictures of the goose! I don’t have any digetal camras to use. (sorry) But I don’t blame you for wanting to see it it’s really cool. I couldn’t beleave I shot it untill I got up to it. I always see them in North Dakota in the spring every where you look but you can’t shoot them then!

October 1, 2003 at 3:04 pm #401I have a spot I go to for Woodies in Harisville WI. But I just get alot more ducks in Green Bay, so I go there insted. Green Bay is really fun as soon as the Blue bills come down.

September 25, 2003 at 4:38 pm #158What Yellow dog said about finding a big pond with alot of ducks on it works good, you just get your things and walk down there like you setting up and all the ducks will get up and leave, but after about 10 minutes you’ll have duck after duck flying in and it makes a real fun day for hunting. The next day you can even set back up there agian and have as good of luck agian, but if not you just go out and find a new pond!

September 24, 2003 at 8:54 pm #180Hey, one thing to also try is last time out there we found where the ducks were working by a refuge coming in and out so we found what ever land around it that had water and we only put about 12 duck decoys out and 1 lucky duck, and then we took a camoed up burlap and laid it over us and layed on or backs in a field nest to the pond and the ducks would either land or fly over and take a look and more then low enough to shoot that the first 2 days out there we hunted a total of 2 hours tops!

September 24, 2003 at 8:49 pm #179It’s kind of funny but I have 9 ducks getting mounted right now and to be honest, When I shot a nice on I just set him off to the side away from the others so I can wrap him in plastic wrap, which you’ll have along any ways if you guys field dress you birds. The biggest thing you really have to worry about is some how pulling feathers out, but don’t worry about them not being straight or anything because I seen how they mount ducks and the last thing i’d worry about is how it looks. Also don’t worry if you shoot the beak, because the use fake ones too.
You said some thing about a three curl mallard, well I have on getting mounted right now that is a 5 curl mallard .
Beleave it it’s true, and you should have seen the bird, it had a head like a canadian goose.
Another thing is you can either wrap the duck with the head straight out or tucked under it’s wing. I tuck it under the wing because it’s just more pretection.September 24, 2003 at 8:49 pm #258338It’s kind of funny but I have 9 ducks getting mounted right now and to be honest, When I shot a nice on I just set him off to the side away from the others so I can wrap him in plastic wrap, which you’ll have along any ways if you guys field dress you birds.
