Been looking at this myself, by the time you buy a Genz box
and everything you need, cost is pretty close to a wash and
the Humminbird case is worth the difference in my opinion.

Have 7 custom rods on order. 3 from TUC and 4 from DH. All will have 4″ carbon fiber handle, both fiberglass and carbon rod blanks. Used a carbon fiber handle last winter and would be tough for me to get away from it. Looking forward to using all of them this winter.

I’m liken’ those carbon handles too, use them on summer rods also.

I’ll admit $5 per is steep but I’m betting that Pink/Gold
will be a killer on LOW this winter.

I’ll stick with my Slender Spoons, although I wish they’d
offer a Fire Tiger and a couple other glow colors like Hot
Pink and Flo Orange or Flo Red.

Was up Friday,,, what an arse buster! Never worked so hard a
dozen perch in my life. Wasn’t too bad getting out as it was
froze in the AM but got stuck in the slush coming off. Trying
to walk in the snow and slush just wears you out.

I don’t have a split grip, but I can say that I do feel the bite on my 32″ TUC.

    FDR

If there’s ONE thing I see about ice fishermen, on this site
especially, they want to be on top of the new gimmick. How
can you use a split grip in a rod holder? It’s called
    MARKETING guys!

    X2

I don’t have a split grip but I keep my finger on the blank and feel the bite a lot of the time. Mid-winter when the panfish aren’t as agressive I watch the tip but early and late you can feel the bite for sure.

Haven’t fished Wini in years but do fish Leech, where there
are a lot of Perch but you’ll catch 10-15 8″-9ers for every
10″-11″er. Just sayin be prepared to cull, and yes do buy the
    xtra scoop of minners.

I am starting to consider moving up from my Otter to a unit like the “Zack Shack”, any opinions on these or other brands would be much appreciated. Looking to stay in 5 to 6k range.

Ridgeline makes a 6X10 all aluminum wheeler that’s really
a sweet little house. Similar setup to Zack Shack, dealer
in Deerwood MN has them for $5750.00

I use masking tape underneath my electrical tape. I simply place and lineup my reel exactly where i want it. I then grab a piece of masking tape and lay the top edge of that where the top of the reel is. Do the same for the bottom. Put the reel on and use the electrical tape. Works good for me.

That’s what Thorne Bros. suggest doing with their rods, works
    well IMO.

Then you’d really crap when you saw people standing on piers on the Gulf Of Mexico in Florida fishing bait with little ice rod combos that are sold in convenience stores all over down there. The ones I saw were either pink or blue. $10. I have a picture of them in a gas station somewhere. I’ll look for it.

Yep they sell ’em in Wal Mart down there also. You shoulda seen the look on the workers face at Wal Mart in Florida when I asked if they had any ice fishing rods in stock as I was looking at the “bait fish” rods. Priceless !!!

On a road trip to Texas in my younger years, just for fun we stopped at a bait shop in Oklahoma and asked if they had any augers in stock. Once they figured out where we were from and what was going on all they could say was ” Y’alls crazy, y’all crack the ice”

Best one I ever heard was when a guy had his walleye rig at
a gas station and the attendant(looking at his Wave Wackers)
asked to know “Why Y’all put yer windshield on da back of
    da boat?”

To each there own, I have two of the TUC 36 inch precisions and absolutely love them for jigging as well as dead sticking. The rod had the right action so the tip can dance some with a little play, but the action is made so after the first 6 fast inches you got alot of backbone to drill the hook home. As far as handle length I like the newer split grip style handles on some of my jigging rods in that I like to sit the butt of my hand down on the blank. Feeling the slightest light bites on those days when fish are extra finicky, just my two cents. – Q

Not sayin’ ANYTHINGS wrong with the TUC rods,,,just don’t
get the short handles or the split grip. They are offered
    with the “standard” handles. JMO

I like my Aldente noodle rod as a dead stick but I would recommend a longer handle if you plan on putting it into a standard bucket style rod holder. I have the shorter handle and wish I would have gotten the 6″ style. The smaller handle is to small for my hands and isn’t long enough to fit into the rod holder when the reel is balanced on the rod.

I just don’t understand these short handles or the split
grip either. You can’t use either in a rod holder, I just
had 2 custom walleye rods made for my son and I with the 6″
handles and I have no problem holding them in the “pencil”
grip with my finger on the rod you can feel everything. The
other thing I see with the split grip is the handle has to be moved further up the rod thereby loosing the length you
    are trying to gain.

Shappell FX100 is a nice 1 man with a wide mouth feature at

Personally I think the graphite handles are great, I need all
the help I can get. I’ve been using them on summer and winter
spinning rods for more than 10 years and plan to continue.
Recoil guides,,, I have them on a Quiver Stick and Al Dente
noodle, I fish outside with these rods and yes they’re worth
    it IMO

There we go again with the damn tape…I’m all for function over form for the most part but certainly there has to be a more, dare I say it, elegant way to meld winch to stick, yes? ;-)

Here’s what I’m gonna be using this winter. The band is much stronger than what you’ll find anywhere. Easy on and Easy off if you want to switch reels quickly.
    Cold Snap Reel Wrap
We’ll see if it lives up to its good looks.

I meant to comment on this early but forgot. I have to say this is a pretty slick product. Not being stuck in my ways, I picked up a couple of new sticks recently without real seats and have used these little goat bands to attach the reels. They feel very, very solid; offering little to no movement of the reel. I hope to try them out under a load this weekend. Thanks for the recommendation. A much more “elegant” (had to get that word in again just for James. ;-))solution than tape…unless of course you start thinking about the purpose for which the bands were made. ;-)

AHHHH! the elegance of scrotum bands,,, just can’t get any
    better’n that!

People who owned that place back in the 70’s had a VERY hard
time making ends meet. The property has always had sewer
issues, now that they have a public (tribal) sewer system the
cost to hook up are too exorbitant to be able to cash flow.
Lot of businesses on the west side are in the same boat.

Enjoyed the show James. Those TUC rods looked like they did
a great job, nice backbone on the Northerns.

Ok here is the thing… If your planning on staying over night or for weekends or longer in the shack, VENTED is a must.. unless you want to feel like @&*^# for a couple days after you get home…

vent less are fine for day trips since the door will get opened a few times and plenty of air exchange will accrue.. but at night that just isnt the case.. Ive found that although it take a little more space a vented threw the roof heater is the way to go.. Its a nice dry heat without any harmful side effects.. also with the pipe threw roof there is no problems with wind…

    good luck

Been using the carbon fiber tubes with carbon bushings for
years, can’t imagine how you get more sensitivity transfer
than carbon fiber on carbon fiber. Never have figured out
why they’ve never taken off, they’re extremely light weight
don’t get cold don’t deteriorate like cork, what more could
    you ask for?

I’d say they’re more about catching fishermen than catching
fish. Some just gotta be trendy no matter what the cost. I’m
still trying to figure out why people EVER wanted 20″ wheels
    on their vehicles
