We had 6″ + in Guttenburg last weekend, looked like you could walk across the river, with all the junk going down river. Never seen that much in 25 years on the river.
The real question will be where to find some slow water this weekend. L/D 10 at 106,000 + and I’m out of 1/2lb sinkers , not sure where, but I’ll be there ! Any suggestions, anyone ??
May 17, 2004 at 8:18 pm #305091Well, no new boat, we didn’t like the condition. Did take 52 to 90 then down 35 at LaCrosse. Stopped in Desoto for Pizza at the Great River roadhose That was worth the trip. Sunday morning north of L/D 10 we managed a couple eyes off a W/D. Stll a lot of current. Thanks all!
May 14, 2004 at 3:21 pm #304822Thanks,everyone for the input, as much as I would like to take the river road I’m trying to get up there and back to Guttenburg in as short a day as possible. Going to one of the Marinas in Afton to look at a new houseboat. Plan to be on the water early Sunday, back down river, for some eyes.
H’mmmm this still means I haven’t decided which way???.February 13, 2004 at 8:16 pm #292600Looked at the Lund and Alumicraft side by side 2 yrs ago, wife picked the Lund, so I decided to keep her . Love my 1700SS, dry boat, great to fish out of,single console(keeps my wife’s mouth shut)Love My Lund . Merc 115 w/SS prop tops out at 45mph with 1 person ,gear, gas. Fishing partner bought Alumicraft w/50 Honda, in 2 1/2 mos boat started leaking water, had to strip boat and take to the factory so they could rebuild hull. Factory guys told him they had been fixing a boat a day with the same problem. Love my Lund.
Good Luck !
March 26, 2003 at 3:12 pm #255540Sorry to hear about your experience at Stark’s. Bought a new Lund rig from them last spring and Bill had everything as promised. I think we all have had problems from one source or another, I know there are alot of dealers out there and some are better than others, I think the key is too let ‘whom ever’ you tryed to deal with ‘know your displeasure’ and see what they would do to correct the issue, if they won’t- maybe don’t go back. I’m a contractor dealing with the public everyday and I try my #%*& to please everyone and I (we) make mistakes. I will do my utmost to make it right(sometimes impossible). If, I have a problem with something/someone, I go higher on the ladder-owner/manager ? 99% of the time things get resolved. Not sure this helps your situation- just my slant on life, and sometimes it goes by too fast.
March 13, 2003 at 6:58 pm #254474Just checked Cabela’s site and they have 6″ er’s, never used them, but now I’ll have to add another couple 100 to the boat.
March 7, 2003 at 5:02 pm #253871I find that there are days when about any color combo will work. And I have gone to complete opposites jig/tail color when nothing else will work. As for jig color-I keep as many unpainted as painted. I like to keep an open mind, when everything is slow, I’ll put on the weirdest color combo I can dig out of the tackle box and throw it at them. I don’t write down any results but, light pink w/flakes (I think it may be close to crawdad) works well, as does pumkin. The biggest problem I have-there are tooo many colors in my tackle box, but that’s the fun of try’in.
November 12, 2002 at 7:02 pm #247926We were up at Genoa from Sat to last Sat. The bite was on and off, early the flow was above 45,000cfs and had to use alittle heavier jig to work, hair jigs w/minnows seemed the best(green) took alot of big fish 3+lbs-one 6+(all were Kodak moments). Many smaller greenies and sauger-should be great in the up coming years. Found most of the fish scattered above W/D’s in the flats. Tuesday the bite was good in the snow, as soon as the snow stopped so did the bite. Thursday the flow was starting to come down and we worked the gates with good success(we had the gates to ourselves)Sat. we had our limit of nice 14′-18′ saugers in about an hour. Good luck !
October 23, 2002 at 3:48 pm #247204If, you mean the level scale ‘inside’ the chamber, then this would be the level of the water from the bottom of the chamber. Hope this helps. -John
September 23, 2002 at 7:36 pm #246378There’s a nice campground at Fairport on Hwy 22, between Muscatine and Davenport. Ramp etc., not sure if it’s county or state. Hope this helps ?
September 16, 2002 at 6:27 pm #246242We’ve been this way all summer above L/D 10, my partner and I have 2 fish in the last 6 wks. The water is up, then the water is down, worst summer for eyes in a long time. Great smallies, stripers. When they decide to turn on – fishing should be great. We did manage about 20lbs of eel grass on sat.(not bad with fresh tomatoes & Greek seasoning)
March 27, 2002 at 9:39 pm #239863West Liberty,Ia to Guttenberg(above damn) 106 one way -every weekend -Love -it!
March 18, 2002 at 4:59 pm #239143Your best bet would be L&D 10,Guttenberg, IA , good ramp south of downtown main st.(about 1 1/2 hrs from C.R.) Dubuqe,IA,L&D 11, about 1hr on hwy 151. Look at the map and you can also go over to Bellevue, depends on how much time you have. Good luck.
March 11, 2002 at 5:54 pm #238744Quick-Walleye Chowder, 1-2 cans of potato soup (depends on # of hungry souls), 1-2 cubed fillets-3/4″x3/4″ , sautee fillets and 1/2 (sliced, chopped) onion in butter 3-7mins. Add to the potato soup, simmer, 2 mins and serve(if you can wait that long!). Of course add fresh ground pepper and your done. – John

November 13, 2001 at 3:19 pm #234892OK – Steve you got me ! That top line is alittle dark and my tri-‘s just never saw the link.
November 13, 2001 at 2:59 pm #234890You might want to call Landing 615 and ask what’s going on, the water was down last wkend when I drove through. Also go to http://www.crh.noaa.gov/arx/ (La Crosse), click on hydro Main, then click latest moring stages and you will get all the flows and river stages from 10 north. I check these everyday for a week before I go to the river.615 might be closed, try Murray’s 563-252-1838 and Beth can give you scoop. Have a good one !
November 12, 2001 at 10:08 pm #234861The line at the dam was good until the front came through , then we had to move to the wing dams, but they just don’t hold that many fish. The line will be your best bet, along with the hump just off of the fishing float, also the breakline over by the false lock. Hope that helps —
November 12, 2001 at 8:25 pm #234857We were at pool 9 all last week and were catching tons(released) of nice Sauger and a few eyes, then Thursday and Friday we hit a lot of 17′-18′-19′ Walleyes. Lead head with ring worms.
Have a good one!
October 24, 2001 at 8:00 pm #234445Go to Boatus.com, they have a good selection. They range in price from $125 -$200, don’t buy a CB or one of the other FM’s, make sure it’s marine band(VHF), their 5-watt, while mounted style with a large antenna is 25watt. A friend of mine put a larger one in his boat with a fold down antenna. He would leave the antenna down and radio on while he was fishing and could monitor the radio, if he needed to transmit he would pop the antenna up. Both the handheld and base units come in waterproof stlyes. The best battery’s are NiCad.

October 24, 2001 at 4:23 pm #234438I have 2- Handhelds radios that I always keep charged- one we take out for the day and leave on channel 16 or 14 if you are near a L/D. The newer radios have weather channels w/alerts so you can keep-up with the weather. The range can vary, out in the wide out pools(lakes) you can get 3-4 mi., around the bends with the high bluffs, maybe 1-2 mi. Or, if you have an emergency you can use 16 and call for help. We don’t go out on the water without one. Hope this helps. – John oh, yes, the second radio we use if we are fishing with another boat and as a back-up.
