With predicted ice for Ohio this coming week Vib’e sales will be skyrocketing!!!

The guys here in ohio do like their vib’es. I had never even heard of a vib’e till I moved here. It’s nice having a real winter again. The last couple years have been a real let down and has really taken its toll on the lakes.

I was able to get on the ice yesterday. I drove just a little north to my hometown in Michigan. Saturday dumped about 7″ of snow on us, so conditions were a bit slushy. I had to work for them but, ended the day with 18 gills/sunfish and 5 perch.

Being new to the site, I really don’t know anything about it. What’s the deal with the fish bucks? Not that it matters that much, since they’ll be gone once the new site starts up.

Well thanks for being generous with the cold weather, this year. Many ice fishermen from my neck of the woods thank you.

Its a great fishery with great ecology. Not only that, but a big body of water like that has less chance of being affected by fishing pressure.

Thank goodness for the term “eater size” walleye. That will help the fisheries everywhere for years to come.

The whole “eater size” thing hasn’t seemed to quite catch on here though. You should see the looks people get when they release 7-10lb fish. Many guys think you’re out of your mind. Last year I let a few 5’s go because I already had a few smaller fish on my stringer. The guys next to me thought I was nuts. Keep in mind, fishing the walleye run on the Maumee river, we’re wading in the river and you’re almost shoulder to shoulder with other fisherman. It makes for an interesting experience.

The fish on Erie grow faster. Forage base is one factor.

Exactly. Those 5-7 pound fish taken in a small Mn lake are old fish. Not the best eaters. Most here prefer eating fish in that 15-20 inch range.

Completly different world. You would get funny looks here in Mn fileting out a limit of 7 pounders just like we would get funny looks out there fileting up a limit of 18 inchers.

I still usually only keep the smaller eye for the dinner table. If it’s just over 15″ (minimum size on Erie) it goes to the table. There is a bit bigger range for the “eaters” here though. I’ll take mostly fish from 15″- 25″ for the table. Fish in the 5lb class are usually about 3 years old. As far as fish larger than 10lbs, the only ones I’ve ever seen were caught during the spawning runs on the Maumee river. It seems to be about the only time you can catch those monsters.
Thanks for the clarification guys. I wasn’t sure if our eye here run big, or if guys like James Holst and Jason Mitchell just make the fish look small because their so big. It’s kinda hard to tell sizes on TV.

Thanks for the great show! These ice fishing videos have me jumping with excitement for ice to come. I hope our waters here in Ohio lock up soon, we’re due for a good ice season.

I like my black Betty quite a bit. Spinning reels still have their place, like when jigging spoons and rattle baits. I use the inline reels more for jigging panfish with plastics or spikes.

I don’t know about the rest of Minnesotans but all I catch is 10-12# walleyes too.

    Show off

Now now…. Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not trying to rag on MN eyes. I personally have never caught one in the 10-12 pound class, but know plenty of guys and girls that have. My biggest was a little over 6lbs, and here what would be considered a smaller female. I guess I just thought Lake Erie was more about the quantity of fish than the larger size of the fish. I suppose, growing up near Lake Erie has caused me to take it for granted to a certain degree and not quite realize how great of a fishery it really is.

Thanks for another great episode. It was a pleasant surprise to watch it on YouTube Sunday morning while cooking breakfast. Can’t wait for next week.

Just be glad you guys aren’t getting the rain that we’re getting here in ohio. We’ve had fairly cold ice making weather for about a week, then the last couple days have been in the 40’s. We got rain today and it will be in the 50’s tomorrow with a chance of more rain. It won’t get cold again till Friday, but after that we should be making ice. I’m still holding on to the hope that I can be on ice before Christmas.

In my family, we have both on the table. Unfortunately for me, in my wife’s family, a lot of times it’s not a part of dinner at all. Same thing with the gizzard and heart from the bird, they throw it away. I had to call and beg my wife’s aunt to save them this year.

I do or have all of the above, but don’t get all the emails or notifications. When I do, it’s usually a week after I’ve watches the newly added video(s).

The ice breaking shot was part of the season 8 intro. (Looked like White Bear Lake) The show opener was pretty sweet. Loading truck and boat on a ferry to get out to an island on Lake Michigan to fish smallies.

But when will it be on YouTube?

It hasn’t been added to YouTube yet. I don’t get to watch it on tv, because I’m in ohio. I’ll be watching for the update all day today.

If he’s so worried about gas mileage an a boat he should just get a kayak. Far more fun fighting a musky from a kayak vs a carola. It is pretty funny though.

The give away Facebook page doesn’t seem to be working. I enter my email address and it seems to just lock up. No entry form pops up.

When might I be able to watch the new episodes on YouTube. Living here in ohio, I don’t get Fox Sports North.

I definitely DON’T feel sad about winter and ice coming around the corner. For me, living in Ohio, the last two winters have been dreadful. Almost NO ice at all, which makes for a very crappy ice fishing season. I was able to get out once last year and the very next day it was all open water. The year before that there wasn’t any ice to speak of. As I tell everyone I talk to about ice fishing, you can be a warm as you want to be out on the ice. Sitting in a shanty with a heater, you might just find yourself peeling off layers.
