According to the DNR, if we took fish over 17″ we would more than double our take – from 52,000 to over 112,000….does that sound reasonable ?

Interesting Read?? More like disgusting, debilitating, depressing,. So much for trying to eek out a living up here. We are alreading fighting the DNR and now this, the public perception alone is going to keep untold numbers of people away. Nice to see everything is so rosy on the rez, since they are getting so much free money thrown at them, why do they need to exploit the lake? I’ll hold my toungue just a bit longer on this subject until the details are set, such as pond nets or gill nets. Now pond nets will be fine if they release everything in the slot unharmed, They could do huge public relations improvement if they publicize it will be pond nets. Hard to understand their mentality in that article.
Right now ,all of the above, froze solid ,offroad is easy with trucks and wheelers with the hard pack, sleds work good too, plenty of snow. But remember past results are no gaurantee of future results.
Hey cateyes, I relieved your brother of some of his stale golden light tonight , they had 5 keepers this afternoon, not too bad for a beginner

…. Not sure what you were thinking Jeff when you let the roads melt like that. ..
Well, I do have some uncanny abilities, but turning ice into water on such a grand scale,aw…shucks, I humbly accept your , after all women have called out to me oh god, oh god on many occasions
Okay, Russ. Everyone got their limit in 30 minutes….Until next time.,that’s the report…………………………..he,he,he,
The fish are still biting ,still not much for crappie though. Seems to be a lot more smaller northerns being caught this year, in that 20 -25 inch range. We finally can go offroading again, now that the snow has froze back tight. What a weekend ,though, a real mess, water freezing with a crust that you break through and get stuck. Several times over the weekend I got to listen to some guy chew me out when I came to help them out, some even when they did not listen and took a wrong road. I guess they figure I make those conditions on purpose just for fun. Some people have no patience and yet they call themselves fishermen. And then there is the complete opposite fellow, apologizing profusely for taking the wrong road and having to ask me to help him out. You can guess which guy I want back as a customer. I had one road blocked off with a van and big frozen ice/snow balls 2 feet high. The guy moves the ice balls ,drives down the road 1/4 mile and breaks through. Wow, was he red, but at least he was still of good cheer. So now it is all froze up again, the side roads are rough but passable. I still have my houses 9 miles out, less than a week now for walleyes, so hurry up here and get you some!
Just a quicky here, last night (Sunday) was excellant out on the mud flats at 9 miles, several houses out there all reported 15-20 walleyes between 5 and 7 pm. Hurry up , only 13 days left to get some of these scrumptious, delectably exquisit, world famous walleyes for the dinner table.
What great weather! Northerns are really starting to go here lately, way out on the deep mud. That’s a good sign , the pike is the top predator in the lake… he won’t be where there is no food! Walleyes are doing pretty good out there too, Some places are reporting a pretty slow bite, but I have definately found this year especially you really need to keep plowing more areas to move into, a heck of a lot of work on the back and the old plow truck, but it is paying off as everyone out there at the end of the world is certainly having satisfactory angling . Don’t skimp on bait, the fish know a cheapskate and shy away from those minnows that have been in the same brown smelly water for a week or two. Model and color of lure are not as much of a factor as is being in the right place at the right time. These fish are a little more lethargic this year due to the snow cover slowing down the whole metabolism of the food chain. That being said, there are areas of the lake where the bugs and squirmies emerge from the muck and thus start the cycle. This is what I look for and being successful, I’ll stick to that theory for now
Today was a good day for northerns, 1 house had a 34 and a 41 incher and the other house had a 34 and a 36 incher, alll caught on a fathead and small ice jig. Tipups haven’t been that productive this winter on the pike as of yet. The 4 inch suckers being used targeting the slimers have been producing good walleye #’s though. I would use the largest bait you can find, Agassiz Bait has some heavy northern suckers. And way out on the mud flats is where the best action has been lately.
ANOTHER interesting weekend was had by all up here in the far reaches of the universe! Fishing was fair to good with all my houses iceing from a low of a dozen to some going home with the limit of walleyes. I’ll be moving a few houses to a hot spot where a wheel house plopped down and caught 42 walleyes from sat. at 5 thirty pm to sun.morn at 10 am. Yesterday around 2 pm I was checking on some customers when the tip up sounded off and the fight was on. A nice fat 38incher squeezed through the hole some minutes later for some quick photo’s and congratulatory back slaps/handshakes. Dat’s what it all bout ,man! Oh, yeah there was a crappie or two caught also, with a portable taking the prize with 3 crappies right outside one of my houses.
And in other breaking news, Tom Daschle, was found to not have paid his taxes on a gift of limousine service, well, maybe that isn’t news, but I just want to do my part and keep all the con stitch you ants informed. So the lesson to be learned from that little tidbit of political-pork-bull is, do not pay your taxes and you too could be chauffered from your 5 star hotel to your high rise office penthouse on Pennsylvania Avenue on a daily basis.
And that’s what’s going down here in the great white north, have a nice day you all
Punched some new side roads this a.m., parallel to the rez line, which seems to be where the best bite is happening, road is in great shape , still some open houses for this weekend, call me for a deal, fishing has GOT to be more important than watching some overpaid spoiled brats on T.V.!, in tight pants chasing each other around on a rectangle shaped piece of grass……fake grass at that!. Anyway, the perch are definately biting better and big northerns and walleyes….What’s in a crappie anyway….WAY overrated fish,I heard somebody caught one last weekend about 4 miles to the northeast …..
Well Nate and his comrades got settled in their house just before noon today, I put him practically within spittin’ distance of the rez line, when I checked on them at sundown they were doing quite well, several keepers and close to a dozen throwbacks already…either too big or too small..they wanted to keep the guide happy ,so with a little arm twisting I succumbed and obliged by taking two beers off thier hands … , just enough nourishment to get me back to shore
We had excellent walleye action out there at 8 to nine miles, especially on thurs., and friday in the hardhouses, portables on the outside edges of the city hammerd em on saturday.I had 11 boyscouts from the Rice area over the weekend, they had a lot of fun, those young whippersnappers Several crappies and some nice perch thrown in along with the usual story of the “all lines in the water taking pike and wrap em all up in a nice mess!” Looking forward to another good week for the next batch of fishing customers starting with some new recruits on monday. I lost my rear driveshaft on the plow yesterday ,so it is to the junk yard for me in the early am .
Still no slush, wow! we be living right I guess! Bring your wheelhouses we’ll get you a nice parking spot right on top of a swarm of wallys
Jack, are you the famous taxidermist with minn valley fishermen, coming to stay at Agassiz Fishhouses on the 23rd? Glad to meet you.
And the fish are biting best 11am to dark and then again on and off throughout the night after 8pm. Another couple crappies caught, but no #’S YET.
Ice still in great shape, no slush, 20 plus inches, best bite is whenever you can make it out on the ice! We missed the latest dump that central MN got ,so we’re thanKful for that !

Well, I won’t be melting anytime soon, that’s a fact! Walleyes are still hitting, best bite is noon to 3 pm all season thus far, with the typical bewitching hour proceeding sunset a surprisingly lackluster affair. Still a crappie straggling through at the 3 mile range which always makes the smile on the catcher catching. I have all the bait you need and the road is in great shape. Cookie and I aim to be the freindliest, funniest, funnest, and in Cookie’s case furriest guides on the lake!
Fishing was great yesterday, best bite for eaters was noon to 4 pm, the overs bit best after dark, I had two houses out yesterday, both limited.
I put a house out at 2.2 miles yesterday, and there is more fishermen scattered around, so should have a good report soon, everyone has to have there own “safety feel okay about it” zone, as far as driving on the ice, personally I would not drive around on the lake with a wheeler in the back, that’s just some extra weight not needed. Either drive it out from shore or leave it home, is what I would do.
We are now driving full size vehicles as of this morning, 13 to 14 inches of ice, the fish are hitting best in 8 feet of water further off the first break, about 1/2 mile from shore, I’ll get some houses out about a mile tomorrow. P.S. the walleyes are hitting best on 4 inch suckers, they want a big bait.
