I just got back from washington island; people are catching fish but it’s “fair” at best.

were you fishing the trough on the east side? or north side of island? any recommendations/tips on presentation, lure choices and depths would be appreciated. im going up there for the furst time in like 7-8 years so im going in blind for most part. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. Any updates on the fishing reports out of Gills Rock, Baileys Harbor? Anything positive?

Sorry but the bite is still not good. Just curious what has your charter been telling you?

PS: Thank you for the updated report!

So, i went out this morning for a bit. fished MN side just north of the railroad bridge on a big flat that juts out from the MN shore–south of bayport. slipped drifted north (south wind) at about 0.4-0.6mph. not a bite. i fished both 18-19 ft & 23-26ft. i used frozen smelt cut in half. i did put a 1/4oz barrel weight in-line in front of lead snap. will try again soon.

Cat Tip of the Day: Drifting for Channel Cats

very nice article!…Ive been pulling walleye spinners with crawlers. had some success last year–caught 5 2# cats, but wouldve never guessed on the drifting with cut suckers.

Also, im going for cats that i can eat. Will your article apply to smaller cats?…if i get a big one-bonus!

sorry, missed this…as i mentioned, they went every 45-60 minutes, but that 430-700PM timeframe seemed to pick up a bit. i bet the early early morning would be good too.

    Josh,

put in right on the side of the road just north of Garrision Sports and just south of Garrison Marina/condos. nice area.

but, as alot of people are saying, im not sure what it looks like there anymore, but if i had to guess, i would think the “break” from out in front of McDonnys and northward might still be accessible.

bring some big minnows. tipups ruled! 7-22FOW. fish roamed through every 45-60 minutes and bamm bamm bamm then done for 45-60 minutes.

good luck! let me know if you go and how you did please.

    Lars,

a very valuable report…nice to see confirmation from a week ago that they are still in there.

not sure if you saw James comments from last weekend, but he and i experienced the same inefficiency when it came to tipups. we went 9 for 19; james did just as poorly until he figured out that minnows size was the issue.

he bumped up to 6-8inch suckers and went from 1 for 6 (i think) to 100% hook-ups. i was stuck with a small minnow

would recommend to bring your large minnows next time you go.

    Bowhuntr,
dont worry so much about the ice. if it’s good ice go ice fishing. if open water, get the boat out.

Just adapt to the conditions. my good pal & i went out of Garrison today in the boat and had a great day with the 50F sunshine. No Sallys….just go fishin!

    To Red Door’s experience….

i still say prepare for the conditions, kiss your kids & wife good-bye–tell them you love them–and Go Fish (and hunt)!

Life’s short!..push it, for the reward!

my last post! appreciate the convo!

unbelievable!…this i guess is the frustrating part or maybe the alluring part of fishing that keeps a dude scratching his head, spending more time and keep coming back. thanks for the info. very useful!

    Happy New Year!

i guess i dont see it as “stirring the pot,” “ranting” or asking for “grief” when i challenge the current position of others as whats best or not best on any given topic…i think those labels are used by people who couldnt answer my original question of “why?” If that is what is to be expected, then im not sure this forum would offer me much in the form of education.

regarding Red Doors and mbenson’s explanations…Thanks! that better clarifies the “why?” and provides info that i can use in future. I can better respect your decisions on the matter. Have a happy New Years as well.
