About 3 years ago a buddies shorthair pointed a skunk and I was the one on point first and got “it” from about 4 ft away. My outer garments were quickly shed and burned on site (works great!). When we returned to the hotel the dogs were left in the truck while we investigated what we should do (yes I got dressed first). We stopped in the hotel bar for some advise and ended up getting some great ideas from some local farmers and the bartender. After about 6 hours of listening we decided to walk the dog into the hotel and throw her favorite ball into the pool (at 2:30am). The chlorine did a wonderful job at knocking down the overpowering smell but this stunt did not sit very well with hotel mngmnt. Needless to say our trip was cut a day short (due to no place to sleep), but the dog smelled great when we got home. So this leads me to ask, does your neighbor have a pool?

    Good Luck!!

Last fall my Explorer came in contact with an unlucky hen south and west of Desmet,SD. Took the grill, headlight mounting panel, both pieces of the drivers side headlamp and marker assembly and curled the hood under then bounced into the power mirror that happened to also be heated. Boy did she taste good!!

On my way to the Huron area on Friday night. I grew up there and my family owns some fantastic habitat that I’ve hunted for 25 years (ever since I could carry a BB gun). We used to run a pay to hunt and guide service for some years, but that gets old in a hurry. The hunting is so good we have never bought birds EVER and we’ll have an 18 man limit on Sat and Sun by 3pm. I can’t remember the last time we killed less than 50 birds a day on opening weekend. Its really great this year because my 5 year old gets to go with and be part of the “guy” crowd this year instead of staying back at the house with the womenfolk! Hope everyone has great luck!!

Our family has a cabin on the Miss. where it exits Cass Lake. We usually find this time of year that Winnie produces better numbers and quality so we drive to the campground on the west side to load and fish from there all the way up to Stony. I’ll probably have a handheld marine band with me all weekend through Monday. Channel?

By the way, I did have a camera with and have some great shots I’m just not very ‘puter savvy. I don’t have the first clue how to get them from my phone to the ‘puter?

She’s still swimming around up there. I let her go and told her I’d catch up with her again next year, same time same place! I am very thankful that the Lord blessed me on Wed. evening with that wonderful experience. That happens to be my personal best to date. I caught a 7lb’er when I was 15 years old but since then have put alot of limits together but never run across really big ones. Remember, you can’t catch ’em sitting at your desk so keep your line wet and your rod bent!!!

The fellow that caught that fish went to high scool w/ my little brother. That muskie has been on display at Blue Ribbon Bait in Oakdale since it came back from the taxidermist. He worked there for years and may still (I have moved 45 miles north and rarley stop in there now). Its a sight to behold. If you ever get a chance to swing by, stop in there it may still be on the back wall.

Thanks very much for the report! I’ve only been up 1 time so far this year (1st week of June), but I usually almost live on the west side of Winnie and the north side of Cass (Pug Hole and McDonald Lake shoreline). Getting really excited to get up there. Thanks again.

Don’t forget the most overlooked crappie hole on Big Winnie is the 3rd River Flowage. Along the north side there is a cabbage bed that runs the length of the shore from Stony Point up to where the reeds and rushes start. Sometimes the fish are up in the old weeds in 5-7ft and sometimes they are harder to find if they are off the weed edge in 7-10ft. When I have found them in the past I haven’t caught any small ones, they all seem to be 13″ plus!!

Sounds like a good plan! I’ve never been on Leech before. Call me when it gets closer and we can fine tune the details! Cell 6127501124

I fished the GNWC tourney on Sunday and I didn’t hear of anyone fishing on tourney day there. I pre-fished there on Thursday morning for about 3.5hrs and got a big 0. I stuck it out for what I thought was along time because I really thought I should have come across some fish. I pulled #9 orange husky jerks on three-ways, fire tiger Grappler Shads, blue and chrome Grappler Shads and same colors in original #5 Shad Raps and had no luck. Last weekend teams fished from the dam to Wabasha and the live bait on three-ways outfished plugs by probably 3-1 for numbers of fish and overall size average.
I wish you all the luck in the world pulling fish from Maiden Rock!

The buzz is the St. Croix around the Kinni on live bait. I haven’t gone yet, but thats what I heard down at Red Wing last weekend at the landing.

I fished in the GNWC tourney on Sunday and the guys that did good fished w/ a minnow or a leech w/ a three-way using the electric to go reallllly slooooww around any visable current breaks. Go a couple miles down from Colville Park and stay left through the little current cut and come around to the left up the other channel about 3/4 to 1 mile to a wide opening to find really slack water to use that live bait rig. I beleive they call that area “5th cut.” Stop somewhere local and confirm. Good Luck!!

I’ve been fishing pool 4 since I was in high school (’85-’86) and there doesn’t seem to be anymore pressure from a weekend standpoint now versus then. There is alot more mid-week pressure from pre-fishing tournament anglers then there was back then. In my opinion the quality and numbers of fish has increased since then. Some might disagree, but we had a fantastic day on 4-5 in my boat. 12 fish by noon and 4 over 4lbs. A good friend pulled plugs in the main channel and had 12 fish by 11am and 5 were over 7lbs. The important factor here is that all the fish over 20″ from both boats are still in the river!!! Catch and release is the name of the game if you want your kids to be able to do this in 20 years. I want to provide the best fishery for my kids that I can, just like my dad did for me. thanks guys!

See your jig on the bottom!!
