We hang them by the neck immediately after gutting. This let’s the juices run out. When it’s time to skin we hang them by the hamstrings. It seems like less Hair on the meat.

Thanks for the replies. I like the bottle idea. Maybe throw the bottle in the direction of your car and pick it up on the way out. Thanks again! Good luck for the rest of this season!

We head for Routt Nationl Forrest in Colorado Sept. 4. For those of you who want to hunt Wyoming, you can still purchase a preference point on line….

We go to a small town named Yampa, and hunt the Routt. Where do you hunt?

Sounds like you’re way more ready than me. We are going to colorodo for archery elk. We leave in less than a month… We hunt a national forest over the counter area. I can’t wait!

take a 12 inch long PVC cap both ends.. drill hole so a valve stem fit tight.. drill two holes for wires to go in.. put wires in so they just touch caulk them to seal from leaks..

fill valve stem with acetylene.. run a a long wire (speaker wire works good.. dig and put under stump as deep as you can.. touch wires on a 12 volt bat. be sure and stay clear of stump….$10 bucks should cover it.

    Sounds fun

    access to any blasting supplies

Maybe I should post again and ask if anyone has some dynamite they would like to get rid of? The area was clearcut 10 years ago. The oaks sprouted into bushes. Had I been on this 10 years ago I wouldn’t be asking for help now. I may try burning them. Thanks for the input.

I knew that would be the answer… Brute force or time… Time is cheaper I guess. Just thinking out loud. Thanks

Sweet. On our return from a trip to florida we stopped at a rest stop. My 6 year old pulled out the hog and let it go by the door of the truck. I wonder where he learned that?

Nice night to sit In a tree. Two buck fawns and a small 8 were brave enough to come into range. I let them live for this year. A doe was lurking but didn’t give me a chance. Turn out the lights the lights, the party’s over. I miss it already. Only 8 months until colorodo elk…

If the over/under was 300,000, I’d take the under. If the books are not cooked. Wasn’t it 315xxxish last year?

I hunt west of spooner. Two years ago and beyond I saw more than 100 deer/season. Last year it was 20 this year it was 15. Some deer on the cameras, but mostly at night. I’m guessing this will be a 20 or 30 year low in deer harvest numbers statewide. Maybe worse up nort. My dad talked about not seeing a deer at all when he was younger. Maybe those days are coming back. For the record we hunt private land. Its normally a good area for deer.

I bow hunt out of yampa near Sheriffs resivoir. The locals say its a zoo up there during rifle season. So I guess you can rule out archery unit 231(IDK what that translates to for rifle). Fun spot but busy for rifle.

I’ve been doing a little “road work”. Start to feel good and get excited. Less than 50 days untill we leave. Hopefully everyone is feeling the same.

Thanks for the pep talk Les. I may have come off like we miss the draw deadline because of ignorance but its more calculated than that. I would leave today if I could. Every year we have 10 guys ready to go untill its time to get in the truck then it drops to about 3. Some of our party aren’t willing to commit that early. I would say put up or shut up because I’m going with or without you, but some of the people are family members.
So, I’m fired up. I’ll be shooting as soon as the snow is gone. I’ll be continuing my online research throught out the year.

Are you in a draw area? We haven’t drawn a tag yet. We normally miss the deadline. We still have had action every year. We average seeing 15-20 elk in a 7 day hunt. Do you guys see similar numbers? Last year was the toughest we’ve had(7 elk in 7days). Other hunters we talked to were struggling too. I would like to try a different area but it’s tough to drive 1100+ miles and not know what youre getting into. I know thats part of the excitment but we know the area were in. Sorry if it sounds like I’m blabbering but we leave in about 165 days.
