Phone books still get used – a lot! I know a lot of guys have said they throw all their phone books away as soon as they get them here, but think about how many people still don’t own computers and aren’t able to “google” everything they want to find. (I have friends in their 20’s that don’t own or use computers!)

When someone opens up the phone book to a listing – boom there are ads and numbers to call. Think about it, – it’s still easier and faster to look in the phone book than to even type it into the computer and scroll and click to look at someones website for information on what types of work they do.

If you have a good presence on an ad in the phone book (larger ads typically get first placement on the page) you will get calls. Statistics show 83% of the people who are looking for services in the phone book look at and read the ads by a heading first. Of course by having the largest ad on the page you will get the first phone calls (first chance to make an impression to a potential customer), the best calls (the customers who are willing to spend the most and soon) and of course the most calls.

On average people look at 4 ads before making a decision, so you don’t necessarily have to be the biggest on the page if your budget doesn’t allow it.

The next question is which phone books to be in?

There are so many now that it get’s rediculous! There are of course the Yellow Book, Dex, and a pluthera of indepent phone books as well as your local hometown Telephone providor.

A guy could go broke trying to advertise in all of them. Be sure to get in your local area service providers directory as this is usually directly mailed out to the area customers of the Tel co and people really like to use their home directory over some of the other large commercial directories that cover a wider area. By that I mean Yellow book. The Yellow book is obvoiusly well known and if you want to advertise to a larger out lying area around you that may be a good investment of your advertising dollar. They are of course online for those who use yellowbook.com. Be wary of some of the other independent phone books in your area. They will tell you they print X amount of books, but the real question is how do the people get those books? Hire some guy from downtown to go deliver them door to door and instead they get thrown in a dumpster so he can collect his check and get back to the bar???

When people don’t recognize the book that shows up on their door step, they get tossed as most folks only keep one or two in the house that they know and recognize.

Which lakes do you target muskies??
We usually fish in Big and Little Fox and a little up into Indian lakes, have thrown at some very nice looking structure, but have never seen a ski. I know they are in there somewhere – any tips would be appreciated!

Also anyone target smallies in mid August?? We have fished them hard in the past only to turn up a few here and there. I know the system is noted for a tremendous smallie fishery, but haven’t seemed to find anything of size or any sort of numbers.

Any report on the water levels? I know at one time the water was way up in that area, but curious if that has changed with the recent lack of precip?

The Release…

I’m going to guess the 27th. I hope it’s before that, but what will be, will be… Scatteres t-thowers now in the forecast this weekend and wind – that warm rain will help lots!

I’m heading north next weekend for some sturgs either way. But am definately geting the urge to hit some small local lakes for some gills and craps as soon as the ice leaves!

I can imagine after the last few years up there, they are just plain burned out. Jerry and Joani are great folks. I have always gone out of Rogers when up there.

I think Jerry just wants more time to cruise in his new toy!!

Oh yeah – don’t forget to get the new 2007 Lakemaster chip, get an anchor big enough for your boat, upgrade the bow mount if necessary, install new speakers, wax the boat, get some sweet Scenic Tackle stickers for the side of the boat, put the new tags on the boat, go put nearly 50 gallon of gas in the boat at nearly $2.50 a gallon, armor-all the seats, install marine band radio and antenna… oh wait… thats MY list!! lol

Final cost…. priceless…!!

I can’t believe how fast winter came this year!! Even Bemidji had some ice on it on the west side by college when I drove by at around 6:30am. I suppose I should winterize my boat on my next day off – but I am still hoping to get one more chance to get out there and land some piggies!

ooh – I can see it now – glow in the dark boats!! Thats the next big craze. We won’t need boat lights anymore – just charge that baby up and go night fishing!
