Crap, Ive been away for a while and just got in an email today. I was afraid of that….deleted.
April 26, 2010 at 5:17 pm #866943With a little help from James, I took some guys out and we dragged jigs with crawlers. Actually did quite well. Ended up catching 15 walleyes…nothing big, but between those and sheepies, the people were happy with the fishing.
April 6, 2010 at 3:19 pm #79401My hunting partner of 15 years that I had to put to sleep in November.
March 30, 2010 at 4:25 pm #79167Did you add someone to your group that this was their first time applying? If you were on your own, you should have been preference level 2 this year, since you didn’t get drawn last year, and a 3 next year, which would pretty much guarantee you a license. IF you added a first time applier to your group, then you would be a one. Make sense?
I won’t mention anything about QDM either.
February 25, 2010 at 7:01 pm #846243I’ve stayed at the Ash Trail Lodge before. Nice place…only draw back is that it’s on the Ash River so it’s a 20 minute boat ride to get out to the lake. Other than that, it was great!! (We didn’t mind the boat ride, as it’s kind of relaxing)
February 25, 2010 at 5:59 pm #77690I posted this same type of question a couple of years ago and got this reply……
My suggestion would be to go with something roundup ready the first year. It makes things so much easier, this is what I would do. You will see deer on this if you do it right.
First, get in there in May and burn it down with Round-up. Get the Generic from your Co-op, it is 1/2 the cost as brand name Round-up.
Two weeks late get in there with anything you can. An ATV and a disc, an ATV and a big log, whatever, you need to get the top of the soil disturbed a little. You do not need to work it deep.
After you have the soil worked up, plant some Round-up Ready beans. Just throw the things out by hand and use something to drag over the top after they are broadcast. They are cheap and will grow. The beans don’t need to be fertilized because they make their own nitrogen (basically).
Keep an eye on the plot and let the weeds start to take over the beans. When they do, burn it down with Round-up. If they get to bad, you may need to burn it down twice since it is a new plot. Don’t spray the beans after August 1st because the Rape will get planted to late.
Towards the end of July, one week after your last Round-up Spraying, go in and broadcast Dwarf Essex Rapeseed over the top of the plot. 5lbs per acre is plenty. I use a little more when brodcasting and not dragging it in. Just use your hand and throw it around the plot. The seed is tiny and vigorous, it will take after the first rain. The biggest mistake people make with food Rape is they plant it to thick.
Sit back and watch the deer come. You are set. You have a great summer food and one of the best hunting plots you can make.
If you want to put some extra money into the plot, you can add some 30-30-30 fertilizer when you plant the rape. Although if you do this, you may bring in to many deer
February 24, 2010 at 8:58 pm #77643I got my instructor certificate a couple of months ago and will be doing my first class at the end of March in Eagan. I figured since I have 2 boys going through it, I may as well teach it. Any pointers on the teaching side of it?
I did receive a box full of goodies from the DNR after I registered the class and asked for everything they offer!!We have a class of 27 kids, all signed up with one email to the EAA football coaches from last year.
January 15, 2010 at 6:38 pm #832616Zoomer, I emailed the instructor that I just took the instructor course from…here is what he said in reply..
I haven’t read the link yet….Kevin, the ST Paul newspaper article information was from some general information mentioned at the recent Roundtable discussions and “picked up” by the media.
All Day Field and Range day instructor certification will not be automatically done with our existing traditional classroom instructors. The All Day Field and Range day instructor certification will be forthcoming and be tied to the actual field and range day site capability and facilities and commitment of the sites instructor to hold 4-6 one day “classes” throughout the year. Not all of current field and range day sites will be approved for the All Day Field and range day program.
The article explaining the upcoming program is found on the last page of the Fall 2008 PDF file at:
January 14, 2010 at 6:53 pm #832206I sent out one email to all the 5th/6th grade football coaches from last year in Eagan and we have 28 kids signed up. We are going to stop there…especially for our first time.
January 14, 2010 at 6:08 pm #832186We are going to do it in Eagan at the PD’s gun range. I agree with you on the classroom setting as well. Hard to learn by reading about it.
The instructor at the class I took to become an instructor said that they will be offering it on line in the spring. Then, someone told me they read it in the Pioneer Press on Sunday that they were offering it at the beginning of March.
With the busy schedules everyone has going on these days, I highly doubt people will sign their kids up for a 12+ hour course when they can do it online and only take up one Sat to do the field test. Not the correct way to do it in my opion…but that’s where it’s headed.
January 14, 2010 at 4:11 pm #832138I believe he is asking about getting your firearm safety certificate..not the instructor one. I just did the instructor class….We/I had heard they will be offering the firearm safety class on line starting in March…then the kids just do a one day field day to get their certificate.
January 14, 2010 at 3:48 pm #832129Zoomer, I heard about it too…and would like to know where the info is. I just became a firearm safety instructor and was going to do a class in March, but if they are offering it on line with only a field day, I’d set it up to do only that then. If you hear anything, let me know…
November 19, 2009 at 7:01 pm #69318It’s probably too late…but we have used roofing rubber on the outside of all our stands. It works great and holds up for years.
November 16, 2009 at 7:52 pm #68527Quote:
Fireman1217: What type of camera did you use? When I hung my stands about 1 month ago, I mounted a camera arm near the main one. I don’t have a fancy – made for TV shows – type camera. Just the average one you’d see a guy filming his kids playing basketball with. Handheld, barely bigger than my hand. It does have a screw to mount to camera arm. I’m in thick woods and won’t be shooting beyond 50 yards, if that.
Think I’ll be ok?
Thanks,
Eric
Eric, I’m far from the right one to ask… I just take my little digital camera out with me and flip it to video mode. Nothing fancy. The video is terrible on TV, but on the camera it’s ok….it was ok on the photo bucket as well, but if it gets any bigger it’s not good. You sound like you have a much better set up than I. It’s a Nikon Coolpix….but it fits in my pocket!!
November 16, 2009 at 7:25 pm #68510hahaha, too funny.
Thanks Rooster…much appreciated. Same goes to you as well. FF
November 16, 2009 at 7:12 pm #68503I guess it won’t end?? Actually, do you know the guy? Did you talk to him? Just an FYI, I did and was happy for him. It really wasn’t that big of a deal to him, he said “just another deer”. He really didn’t care what size it was, he hunts for the meat. We talked about QDM and stuff like that and after explaining how it works, he actually said “That makes total sense”. Sounds like another “Bad guy” is on board. I’ll pass along your congratulations to him as well though!!
The above was response to Rooster….Steve, we do the same thing in our group.
November 16, 2009 at 6:54 pm #68496Where did I say I blamed him for the lack of my success, which you have no clue on, or him being in the wrong for shooting it. I made a factual statement that it WOULD have been bigger if it was not shot. Talk about reading into things….sheesh
This is not at all where I intended this to go…I edited the wording of the original post. Everyone should be happy now.
November 16, 2009 at 5:55 pm #68479Rooster and Suzuki…I didn’t post this to cause any controversy. I was posting because I thought it was a cool video of a deer. Yes, we’d like to do QDM, but also realize we are in the minority. I wasn’t “mad” nor am I holding it against him or anything like that. He’s a great guy and is truely hunting for the meat which I totally get….Would I have liked him to shoot the “doe that was just as big running with him” instead of the buck? Sure I would have, but I understand it’s his choice. We’ll keep letting the small bucks go, the neighbors can keep shooting them if they so chose, eventually it will pay off.
Now I’ve figured out why I don’t post on here that much.
June 4, 2009 at 1:58 am #781347YOu can go to Stokes Bay Resort. They are up the Canadian channel out of Kettle Falls. Dan Houle is the guys name. Here is his email if you want to send the question to him.
[email protected]
We will be staying at KFH starting on the 17th of June….the countdown is on. Let me know how you guys do.April 27, 2009 at 5:52 pm #50743I rented a walk behind sickle mower last year for the weeds, with alot of thistle, that grew up around our pole barn. It worked great. It had big tires on it so it went across the ground well. Basically, engaged it in gear, then held on….
April 27, 2009 at 5:29 pm #771562Funny…I’m doing the same thing and was wondering on the EXACT question. I WAS planning on going the tile route, but the cultured granite is an idea as well. Where did you get that at?
March 11, 2009 at 3:03 am #757170If that doesn’t work out, a buddy of mine works in Rochester, so he is back and forth to Eagan everyday…let me know.
March 2, 2009 at 3:34 pm #754040Great post!! and Congrats!! BBshot, see if you can fire one across the room at some point….and THEN look at your parents faces. Hopefully they won’t be in the way!!
February 12, 2009 at 8:59 pm #747731Here are 3 pictures I took up on our land near Wadena…the beginning, middle and end of a rainbow. Was too dang close to get it all in one shot. Reference the road sign…
There was no dang pot of gold either. I did see a Leprechaun though…but that was coming home that night from the bar.
February 5, 2009 at 9:31 pm #47367Great question Prieser…I was going to ask the same thing. I take it the bucks are still hitting their rubbing trees? or making new ones? Do you go to an area, or a tree, that they were rubbing in the fall?
