Here’s a link to the list of surplus liscense for available for each area. Looks like there is still opportunity for a guy to get a liscense if he was not drawn in the lottery.

That is AWESOME!!! I definitely have to get me a new trail cam!! Those pictures are awesome. Not that I would catch a bobcat on it, but you never know what is going to show up on it.

When out pheasant hunting the last 2 weekends – I noticed there were a lot more tree’s rubbed up than there were the last weekend of muzzy season.

Got him in the woods
My dads place is about 5 miles North of Rock Dell and yes that is a very good area , Your dad owns it and YOU can’t hunt it ? UMMMM I would get that changed !
Not to say I “can’t” hunt it. It was my grandparents land and is split between my dad and 2 uncles. 1 Uncle still farms it and he hunts it. I have never tried to hook up with his party but have always known it is a great area. They are successful every year. I have plenty of area to hunt back over here by Dodge Center and my hunting buddies hunt zone 4 for shotgun season. Plus it is nice being able to walk out my garage to my stand about 1/4 mile away. This is my first year hunting with the smoke pole. Since the corn has been gone here though, the deer have headed to thicker cover. Just thinking that in the future I might need to get deeper into some woods.
Again congratulations!!! That is an awesome deer!!

Congratulations and thanks for the awesome story. Way to hang in there for 2 hours. I would have had a hard time not trying to get a closer peak/shot at it. Did you get him around the Byron area? Don’t need GPS coordinates or anything, but my dad has some land down around Rock Dell and which I have always had my eye on, but my uncle has a party that has laid claim to that land so I have stuck closer to home.

True albinism is due to a recessive gene. There are two genes that control this condition. A deer that has two dominant genes will be normal color, a deer with one dominant and one recessive (carrier) would also be normal in color, but a deer with both recessive genes would be an albino. Possible combinations and percents of albino offspring: If both deer contain a dominant and a recessive gene – 25% chance the offspring would be albino. If a deer with one dominant gene and one recessive mated a deer with both recessive genes (albino) the albino offspring would result 50% of the time. If two albino deer (both contain two recessive genes) mate, 100% of the offspring would be albinos. Now everyone is confused, right?
Excellent explenation. Although it gave me a flashback to my college gentics course.
As far as “would I shoot” – not a chance. Mother nature gives us some pretty spetacular specimens and we should all do our part to make sure that this diversity continues.

Thanks for all the input. It is nice to get all this advice, but in the end I chose the CVA Kodiak. A buddy has one and has had no trouble with it at all. The Kodiak has the 28″ barrel and metal sites but still retails for less than $200 for the blue on black. Plus has a limited lifetime warranty. Another question – the Cabela’s guy suggested that it needs to have 100 rounds run through it to season the barrel. He sold me a box of round balls for this which is not going to cost much, but I was wondering if 100 rounds is really necessary. I did plan on spending some time on the range with it this week, but wanted to get some input on how many rounds I should put through it.

Been a few years since we have had nice snow cover for 1st or 2nd season of shotgun season in zone 4. Can’t wait!! Beats the 65 degree’s and sunny that we had last weekend.

Great Buck!!
Totally agree with you about the full moon and the warm temps. Sat. did not see much until after 5 pm. Sunday did not even hear any shots until after 5:15. I think that some were even liberal with there 1/2 hour after sunset interpretation. I heard more shots after 5:40 than I had heard total between 2-5 pm. With the rising moon there was still lots of light, but I always go by the clock! From everyone I have spoke with, the deer were hanging very tight all weekend. Hopefully this upcoming weather maker gets them moving for this coming weekend.
