Nope, headed to green bay fri-sun. Will see what happens if I am heading that way for closer or back to the bay. Been a hit or miss oct. for me too. Had a couple of good diver hunts but mallards seemed to leave early this year.
March 19, 2009 at 4:14 pm #760328My daughter will be 2 in a month. all last fall she was in the woods whenever I was checking stands or checking out new places. So much for them to explore and see. As long as you keep it fun she will stay out for hours.
February 18, 2009 at 4:10 pm #47751Ilove to hunt the dark of the moon on clear nights. Seems the will come out into the open more than with a full moon where they tend to skirt cover. With snow cover you can see them coming and then hit the light and kill’em. Last full me and buddy had one sneak in from the wrong way (the way we came in) and get really close but he cut our tracks and headed out. Thought the 870 was gonna get to talk to him but that’s the way it goes. Called it a night at 2am. Hope to get after them this weekend
February 18, 2009 at 3:50 pm #47750I have had one for a few years and use it for yotes. I have the folding stock for it and love how compact it is when making long walks in. If your gonna put a scope on it get the scope mount that replaces the rear sight instead of the one that screws on the side. Mine came with that and the scope would move around so it wouldn’t sight in. Other than that enjoy
November 10, 2008 at 8:39 pm #42558I have a .223 and a .204. I end up taking the 204 way more than my 223. The 204 has a better range and does less damage in my mind.
October 16, 2008 at 8:16 pm #40372Duck numbers are on the rise in northern wisconsin. Blue wings and woodies are moving out with a few flocks still hanging around. Mallards and green wings showing up in great numbers. Scouted monday and tuesday and saw over 500 lards and 300 teal. Looking good for this weekend with high temps of 52 and cold nights 25-35 and north winds things are looking good.
March 30, 2008 at 4:22 am #669253Are you going to paint the letters?? If so I would get some mdf and use that. Great stuff to work with and takes paint great. No plugs, voids, and no plys to see on the edges. I use it alot in the woodshop for alot of things that I am going to paint. Just my 2 cents.
February 20, 2008 at 3:22 pm #34674I make a few wood sets every now and then, but this is big timber next to cedar swamps. Can be tough and you always have to watch for them coming in from behind. Thats when it’s nice to have a 2nd guy. I mainly hunt fresh clear cuts and powerline right of ways. By now they are paired up so be on the lookout for the second one lagging behind.
Good luck and put some fur on the ground.February 20, 2008 at 3:12 pm #34673Nice job I need to get out again but have been busy around the house Now I have a nasty cold and can hardly talk. Maybe tonight or tomorrow I will try to get out.
February 6, 2008 at 3:49 pm #6236I agree with wats. Most cheaper e callers will sound robotic. I love my hand calls, no sequence sounds the same and they are alot lighter to carry.
February 4, 2008 at 8:20 pm #6566Best gun you can ever use is a 22/410. It’s the best of both worlds. If ya see one sitting there you can shoot him with the 22 and if they are running use the 410. I have one and love it to death. Only gun to have if ya hunt rabbits.
January 29, 2008 at 3:21 am #6589I have shot way more yotes just as the sun is breaking in the morning than in the evening. I really don’t know why that is but anytime ya knock one down is a good thing.
January 26, 2008 at 5:39 am #6907I got a 49# last year, they just look fake when they get that big. Been a dry year for me so far, 16 days of sub zero weather and over 25 hours of hunting and nothing. What gives Back out when I get the chance.
January 26, 2008 at 5:33 am #6905I would look for a 223. They are all over the place at gun shows and the ammo is very affordable plus you can get tracer rounds . I have a ruger mini 14 shooting 2″ groups at 250. Great gun for the money and very light for those long hikes back in the sticks.
January 22, 2008 at 5:14 pm #646240Only if I could get a good drift.
That’s what I was thinking too.
January 22, 2008 at 3:48 am #7061In this sub-zero weather I wear a pair of brown jersey gloves inside my chopper mitts. When I sit down to call I slip off the choppers. Hands are alot warmer than those kind of gloves. I have tried them all and this is what I found to work the best.
January 19, 2008 at 3:54 am #7012Headed out tomorrow morning Checked out a fresh clear cut and it looks awsome. They should be hungry tomorrow with a low of -22
January 19, 2008 at 3:52 am #7011I have been a traditional archer for 3 years now. I started with a recurve switched to a compound and now I am back with a long bow. 62″ Rudder long bow @ 55# shooting port oxford arrows. I love the challenge of getting them close made bowhunting fun again.
What are you shooting?
January 17, 2008 at 9:19 pm #644617I might be able to take that off your hands. I have one and I am looking for a parts sled. Where are you located at???
January 14, 2008 at 3:31 am #642983You guys are bickering about football???? I would rather talk about Jessica Simpson Much better material I think than boring Football.
January 12, 2008 at 2:12 am #32366It’s a fun sport to get into. Once the bug gets you though your in trouble. Pretty soon you’ll be wishing for below zero weather. I prefer hand calls becouse they are lighter when you make long walks. Plus your sounds never sound the same as with a ele. caller.
Any more ? feel free to ask.January 7, 2008 at 4:49 am #32804The fox population around here is quite low this year it seems. I have only called in one which is now cased out and drying. I haven’t seen that many tracks around like I did last year. Had 4 around the house last year that I haven’t seen this year. (and no I didn’t shoot them, could have but didn’t) Are you mainly running your dogs in MN or WI? Gonna try to head that way here sometime and hit up some of my old spots around La Crosse.
Good luck and keep at U’mJanuary 4, 2008 at 5:00 am #639524Those people are just plain lazy, why work for my fish when I can go by that guy. He must be on fish becouse he put a shack there. That is too many fishing show that tell you ya gotta catch fish to have a good outing. I saw one fishing show where the host said “Fish by other people to cut down on searching time” I turned the channel and haven’t watched that show again.
It stinks to have to worry about people butting in because they see you catch one. Stealth fishing is no fun but now days it’s how you have to do it. I took all the flags off my tip ups and hide the fish in my pocket on the way back to the shack becouse I know people are watching with bino’s. But there is nothing I can do to change it.January 4, 2008 at 4:32 am #639514I hate to be the devil here but the lakes are public waters. (They even drove on our personal road – paid for in our fee through the resort) As long as they got on the lake legally you can’t stop them from driving on the road. Sure you can say if it wasn’t for the resorts roads nobody could get out there blah blah blah. Nobody plows roads on the big lakes up here and there are lots of guys out on the water. Once somebody blazes a trail more will come. It’s the resorts decision to plow roads if they didn’t I’m sure people would still fish the lake. I work hard to get to out of the way spots. I get stuck alot and do alot of shoveling. I even go a different way home just so I don’t make a beaten trail to a spot, becouse if there is a beaten trail people are gonna follow it.
I for one don’t crowd people, as a matter of fact I am the guy off in the distance by himself. If there is someone close to where I was fishing the day before I go look for another spot. But that is just me and my thoughts.December 18, 2007 at 2:37 pm #16986Yep, nailed that fox. It is now cased and hanging in the basement. Maybe this weekend I can get out for a few sets and get a yote on the ground.
December 15, 2007 at 7:42 pm #633763Votes are in. Bookmarked it and do it every day. Be interesting to see who wins.
December 10, 2007 at 3:01 pm #7570The 17 is a good fox gun but I wouldn’t shoot a yote with one. Sure you can kill one with it but I think you will wound more with it. 223,204, 243 and the 22-250 are great guns. I have both the 223 mini 14 and the ruger 204. I prefer the 204 over them all. A 270 with a 90gr bullet works great too. Here in northern wisconsin I have a hard time getting a shot over 150 yards, most are around 50 and under since I hunt the timber and swamp bottoms.
December 10, 2007 at 2:53 pm #7569Nice looking dog Now that season is open in northern wisconsin it’s time to hit the woods and put some hair on the ground.
