I have a Sportfish 1850 and do a lot of drift fishing. The boat has a large amount of freeboard and a 15 mph wind on a big lake will make you start to believe that you have a sail up. I started with a Cabelas Large drift sock and found out that on Winnie or Mille Lacs, it only changed the drift attitude but I was still flying. I have a Driftcontrol large (60″) amidships on windy days and when its really blowing and they’re biting I put the big one on the bow eye and the Cabelas one on a transom eye. Don’t underestimate how big of sock you need – get one two sizes bigger than what you think you need.

Not to post the popular opinion………….
    1. With a million dollars worth of resources, the Red Lake tribe should be able to formulate a sustainable harvest system and quota simular to the Mille Lacs system. To assume that they would thoughtlessly produce another walleye disaster could be way off base.
    2. Considering the vast amount of lake that the tribe controls and the small size of the tribe, a sustainable harvest would have a major economic impact on members.
    3. Anything they can do to better their condition that does not require Federal dollars is OK by me.
    4. I’m actually pleasantly surprised to see that the Shakopee tribe is helping out another tribe. I was under the impression that the Mystic Lake dollars stayed within the tribe to the tune of a half million per. With that said, I admit that I have never left any of my hard earned dollars there and don’t intend to start. The state and county absorb the costs for supporting the casino (roads, emergency services, utility infrastructure) and the tribe gets the benefit of no taxes. Maybe a toll road leading to the casino could be voted on?
    I digress…………where was I………………….
I (we) should hope that the Red Lake band learned their lesson and this plan will work out for all involved before we start slamming them for past mistakes.

There is no logic or reason that applies here……I just could not buy or lease a Japanese truck and feel good about it.
I’ve had 8 Fords and 5 GMCs, some better than others, all good.

A policy that has been needed for quite some time
This is the first time I have checked the General Discussion in a month as I was sick of the constant political bashfest threads.
    Thank You

Having been there – having done that, watching videos such as this bring it all back. I do a mental honor roll of brothers lost and friends not in touch due to the passing of time and distance. They bring back so many strong emotions but I can’t pull myself away from watching. I watch with a tear in my eye and a feeling of pride in a job well done. I’m sure that all Marines and former Marines 18 to 80 have the same response. I have a sense of loss every time Marine casualties are announced and I don’t expect that it will ever stop. All I would ask from our country’s leadership is that they give our troops a clear mission, the tools to complete it with, and get them home.

    I’ll look for ya there!
Boat and truck are packed and the bros and I will be heading for Winni in the a.m.

We will be at Joe Thompsons 4 Seasons resort for a week and doing some fish slaying and beer consumption. Nothing like being gone for a week with the boys.
If you see a Red Crestliner Sportfish 1850 with a white Evinrude – give us a wave and any hot tips you get.

We just installed a Standard Horizon Quest from Jolly Ann Marine in my brothers Alumacraft. It is a really fine unit and is waterproof to boot. His wife ordered it for him for X-mas (fine woman there!) as a package deal with antenna and mount included. IMO this is THE way to go. It had everything but the soldering iron included. A board sponsor, free shipping, great prices.

I have a mix of Cabelas Quick Draws (for spinning rigs) and 360HTs (for bait casters). 2 flush mount bases in the bow, 2 amidships, and 2 in the stern. I have 6 bases and 8 holders – you can pick up holders without bases cheap in the Bargain Cave.

Two of my coworkers left with the Redbulls too. We should all take a moment to hope/pray for a safe return and successfull mission. Young people willing to serve their country and put life and limb on the line are getting harder to come by as this war continues. We should all thank and support our military men and women in any possible, including being there for the families left behind when our Soldiers,Sailors,Airmen, and Marines go in harms way.
Congratulations sir on raising a young man with the moral convictions and courage to serve his country in a time of need. My hopes and prayers are with you both.

Das Boot 3 – German for the boat 3
My first boat was Das Boot as it was one ugly ole Sea Nymph 14′ with a Merc 20, both of indeterminate age. The motor had a busted water jacket that I fixed with JB Weld and it just refused to give up. The boat had a minimum of 5 leaks and everything in it was second hand equipment. The trailer had at least one light working and only one rim was bent. The name das Boot just fit that old moving violation. Kinda miss her…….
The next two boats have been Das Boot2 and 3 even though both have been new boats (from LaCannes).

I had a F50 on a Crestliner Superhawk 1600 and never got past 28mph so your speed sounds right. Good motor but no speed demon.

I guess I’m with the majority here – liking my job and staying. I have 9 years left to 55 retirement with a 72.5% pension and paid health insurance. I have 6 weeks of vacation and 3 weeks of sick time per year. Sooooooooo……..I’d be crazy to quit this gig. Be nice if it paid more but we get along fine.

As a former Marine (77-87) I am in complete agreement with Jon. Firing up the draft and putting people in uniform for a couple years could be something this country needs. Selective service and ZERO deferments. Get rid of the college and my daddys rich deferments and level the playing field. Limit deferments to medical or dead only.

    What is your point???
I never said that Yamaha was under represented in the salt water market – I simply said that there is a ton of Verados in the boat show pics. There is no “apple and oranges” here.
Any reference to what is seen in a boat show or given marina is simply a snap shot of whats out there.

On the East and Gulf coasts, Honda is a minor player. The salt is dominated by Merc and Yamaha. If you want to see the land of the Verados check out the Miami Boat show pics. The boat manufacturers must have made a dent on the Merc Verado 275 supply! Lots of double and triple rig big Verados on display. The were far more Suzukis than ETEC or Honda pictured.

I beg to differ……..Go read through the current threads on the Salt Water sites. http://www.thehulltruth.com is a good example. The Merc Opti/Verado,Yamaha HPDI/4S, ETEC, and Suzuki wars are on with all contenders having their champions. There is no indication that the 4 stroke will make the modern DI 2 strokes die out soon (or ever). The gold standard for 4 strokes in the high $$ saltwater market is the Verado with the Suzuki gaining ground on Yamaha every year. The 2 vs 4 stroke threads are quite entertaining with the ETEC/Opti/HPDI guys going head to head with all comers. As you said we all win as the outboard technology evolves and improves. The future of the outboard will be decided by EPA and CARB – an emission standard for CO would lead to more tech changes possibly including catalytic converters. It would be nice if auto engine tech had improved as much in the last 10 years as outboard tech has.

    So…………
There were very few ETECs out at the time the survey ended, and the full line had not been released either.
    In addition to that, the only ETECs that were available were the 50-60HP and the Big V-6s in limited quanities. The time frame covered;
    1. Evinrude in transition to ETEC
    2. Yamaha HPDIs 250/300s with well documented growing pains
    3. No other large scale 2 stroke DFI players but Merc in the running.
I’m not saying that Merc won by default as I would be more than happy to hang an Opti on my boat. But………Please recall the marching bands and limit the chest pounding.

You forgot to mention the last place finish in the 4 stroke segment. 1- Honda, 2 – Yamaha, 3 – Suz, 4- Merc.
To be fair, the study was based on reports from May 04 to June 05. Could be that the Verado sample was too low to boost the Merc rating. It will be interesting to see next years report with a full slate of Verados included. Be nice to see the Japanese 4 strokes kicked to the curb in the ratings.

    It just proves the point that;
No matter how long you have been hunting, or how good of shot you are, or how fine your gun is……..
It takes more than a 28 gauge to reliably put down rich lawyers.

    Anyone ever heard of the Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP)? This program is split between St Peter and Moose Lake sites. The MN civil committment law allows MN to scoop up sex offenders at the prison gates when they complete their sentences (which are amazingly light). They are then committed to a “indeterminate committment” which means life or until they are ready for a nursing home. The MSOP has a list of priorities;
    1. Make sure the public is safe – zero tolerance for security breaches
2.Maintain as safe as possible enviroment for staff and patients
    3. Offer enough treatment to keep the courts from releasing them.
This program is expensive and growing. The up side is that it is keeping 250+ mostly pedophiles off the streets and away from yours and my kids and grandkids. This law has been copied by other states and it’s use in MN has been on the increase over the past 3 years. We now commit an average of eight per month with spikes of up to five per day! You can not cut off anything on a pedophile (besides his head) to stop this behaviour. Mn has had this law on the books since 1936 and has had 0 (zero) successfull treat to release patients.
I work at the St Peter site and have it as a personal goal to ensure that none of these SOBs ever get out.

If you keep the same pitch when you switch to stainless, you will lose RPM. The rule of thumb is pitch down when switching to stainless. I use a 21 aluminum and a 19 stainless on my boat. The stainless runs 200 rpm higher but has the same top speed and far better handling and prop lift. A hydrofoil should be your last resort – try a stainless prop to cure the porpoising. Your current prop is loosing bite and allowing the bow to drop and cycle up and down. My last three boats have been walk thru windshield aluminum and they perform best with a good bow lifting SS prop.

Yea that Meth is great stuff – it will keep the mental health system busy for years. It is the chemically induced equalivent of schizophrenia. Matter of fact a meth addicts brain has the same MRI working patterns as a schizophrenics. We are full of meth users that get paranoid and delusional and end up in a persistent psychotic state. Not to mention that the stuff eats the enamel off their teeth and they end up toothless and crazy. I could go on for a few pages on the evils of Meth as I get to deal with the human aftermath everyday.
Drewsdad- The patients that are too violent or crazy (or both) that you foward to Anoka end up in St Peter. We have probally dealt with the same patients at different times of their career.
Mec – if you are serious about getting a job there, Go to the State of Mn Department of Employee Relations and apply. It starts at 14.90 a hour and progresses to 22.50.
it’s not a job for the faint of heart. We do not use Mace, guns, or clubs. You go on your wits and a 8 hour physical skills (judo/karake mostly) course and learn as you go. I spent ten years in the Marine Corps and that training has served me well.
Some days we have way too much of and not enough
I need to start that book but I don’t know how it will end yet.

I’ve been employed at the Minnesota Security Hospital in St Peter for the last 17 years. And no, the two that escaped didn’t come off my unit (or building). I work with Mentally Ill, Sexual Psychopatic Personalities, and Sexually Dangerous Persons who are court Committed to the MSH. Right now I’m a Lead Counselor on a M.I. unit. I spent 6 years working the Sexual Psychopathic units but had to bid off as the urge to choke the life out of Pedophiles was getting too hard to suppress on a daily basis.
The unit I’m on now has a variety of patients who were sent to us after committing a variety of felonies ranging from simple assault to multiple murders. I could write a book on the things I’ve seen and heard here since 1988. It would be a cross between One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest and Silence of The Lambs.
Any of you danger junkies of there are looking for a new job, we are looking for 70 more Security Counselors between now and Sept. We can’t build secure buildings or hire staff fast enough to keep up with the sexual predators that the courts are raining on us.

My last two (Crestliner Superhawk 1600 and CL Sportfish 1850) have had zero leaks and never have water in the bilge. My 25+ year old Sea Nymph 14’er has a few water invasion issues but it earned them

I’ve towed my boat for two years (approx 1000 mi per year) and have not had a problem with snaps coming off. I think the key is to have the cover TIGHT like in bouncing quarters off it. Adjust those poles up until the cover is as tight as a drum and mark them so it is the same every time. It’s worked for me.
