On this subject, I have a questions thats been bothering me too either glass or aluminum…
How well does a glass do in the late, late fall (ex:breaking ice in bay to get out) vs. aluminum? Will there be a problem w/ the fiberglass?

Thanks Larry. Don’t mind boating but there’s quite a few troopers coming out, not enough boats to fill. Don’t fish the rivers too much and a lotta places have curfew etc. Will probably have to try that stretch. Thanks.
Toss a foot long muskie lure their way. They’ll understand in the ER.
Thanks for sharing Briank. What else you got in that bag of tricks? Gotta try that rubberband one.
All I can say is I have been eye`ing one for quite sometimes now. Truck payments will be done very soon
Wow, very nice and very clean. Those are a beauty. Good job, need to get out and try for some channels again. Dude are you lippin them?
I’ve fished it one time this past week and the water lower has dropped pretty good. Fish are slow as we had tried for cats. Fished an area with about 8-10 other guys and no one had anything to show that night. Had hits but I bet it was them turtles. Stink to cutbait could not produce. A few other guys could not find the eyes either. Couple of small smallmouths for kix.
Channels seem to work as early as you can get out there. Right now they are biting hard, although I have not been out after this big rain we had. But we have been getting our biggest right before night, 8-9pm on cut. Action slows usually after 11pm and picks up again few hours later.
I was looking at them surgical tubes, just thought the treble was awfully small campared to the cirlehooks. Probably pick some up. Will only depend on the stink when I can’t make it too the baitshop. Saturday night my bud who brought along the stink bait oppsy’d after catching a small cat and was hurrying to get his rig back in the water when he grabbed the wrong end of the stick, if you know what i mean. He washed his fingers over and over that night and man did I feel sorry for him. Ha! Yea right. Acouple of beers the laughters took off!
Same as Dan, I started out using 80lb Power Pro moss and have been using it ever since. No break-offs etc. I like so far.
I hope its nothing more. I have problems with my yukon at the moment also. Stupid air conditioning sensor on the back end is broken or something because it does not know how to shut off anymore, first started when I though my battery went bad. After going in and having Batteries Plus test it they said it was fine. Came back a day later after they recharged it up, it died again later that night. Brough it back, got it exchanged for a new battery and at that point I was not a happy camper anymore. Put new one in and it did the same thing over. Figured I brought battery back, had it charged, put it back in and sat in the car furious over what’s going on and how much time its taking away from me towing the to the water. While thinking and car was off I finally noticed the stupid air pumping way in the back, wishper like, raging on and on. Checked all the knobs and made sure they were off, and still it was going on. Resulted me pulling the fuse for the airflow in the back to sit that problem down. Still havn’t booked a time to bring it into GMC yet.
I believe your spinning rod and reel at the moment should do fine for northerns, if your on a budget. Musky rods kind of takes the fun out of pikes due to the stronger backbone/stiffness of the rod. You feel the strike then they come in too ez, especially when I’m fishing a Heavy ski rod. I think the real difference depends on how you like to be set up. You can cast better with baitcaster set up but it will take time to get used too if you aren’t experienced with a baitcaster, will get ugly on you fast. I also think the drag system is better on a baitcast, meaning it will be more durable than a spincast for larger fish. It can also take more pressure than a spincast reel. Although I’m not an expert. As for bait, Deluxe has it covered. Other than that I’d recommend chucking Mepp’s Musky Marabou in Black with the silver blade. Dang marabou has never given me a ski yet. But it has provided nonstop northern action + an occassional upper class bass. Anything musky spinner type bucktail or marabou in the smaller version will keep northerns on with a chance to hook up w/ a ski. Fish it medium fast to burning and it will sure put you on northerns.
Been going out atleast 2-3 times a week. I have had no luck yet other than follows. My brother has hooked up with two small 30-35″, both on dunwrights topdancer. I have also been out on Forest and it has not given up much either. I did have a very nice looking ski blowout on a loon topraider close to boat last night.
Stop bassin and start sunfishin! Worth way more.

$517 each for the sunfish.
I am not lying. I have seen this 3 times now, but I believe the first two were different people. I tell you, these peeps that tan naked seem to always anchor or sit in a stable zone. I only see this happening on weekdays. They will park in low traffic drop offs. Like I said, idc really, just when I have the young ones on, its seems to be an interesting site. It was around the shady island area. Big cruiser yacht, you will not see them if you are facing their sides or front, you will see them if you cruise behind them. You will not miss the two mountain’S or forest/brazillian wax that way. I gurantee I will be seeing more this summer as it rolls in. Would take pictures but it would be pointless to post. Why not just cruise dead bays with low traffic and see for yourself.
Good luck out there men I was debating about signing up but, will have to babysit until the lady gets off, which is too much time deducted, not to mention ramps packed by the time I get there. Hope you all find giant’s at the end of your lines. Might have to pick some different lakes for the pm since those lakes listed will probably pounded to dust by night.
I have been looking at those too the other day when I was at thornes, the only thing holding me back is I have a few of these “VIRGIN” lures that ran me 15-25 bucks a pop, if you know what I mean. Plus I have really been concentrating on only working with gliding jerks, new thing for ’07, helps with the unconventional habit of buying lures. Topwater jerk/crank are easier on the arms, good for the occasional break. But I might have fork up a few bucks for a one or two of those, they are tad bit shorter with good weight and the 3trebs are a plus.
Reason why I walked the dog in that spot is there is an weed channel right in casting reach which seems like the ultimate ambush spot between two shallow tips. Hard to throw anything that submerges due to weed growth but in that particular spot there is almost a open highway. Only noticed this due to ripping off weeds on the trolling motor and getting drifted into the weed patches a while back. Most ski guys never really go right into the weeds, unlike them bass guys. But them ski’s sure like the presentation of some thing wobbling side to side coming from shallow to over deep water and back shallow.
Thanks Gary, I think thats one thing I got to learn to do. Its so frustrating sometimes when you have a good hit and miss and your like “what the f??? just happened?” Then you keep trying to repeat that process of casting back to try and connect one more time. Got to learn how to ease it and come back later.
But secondly I want to comment, how the heck do them STUPID bass and northerns always manage to hook up while ski’s always get away?
Thats kind of what I figured, either they just tapping or playing around with the lure quick and return to their layer. Just thinking if there’s something wrong with the way I jerk the lure. Do muskies hang on or they just hit and spit?
This year I am seeking a more pressure on the lakes I fish then before. Yesterday I was fishing one zone with 5 other boats joining me (all other spots were filled also)…but its seems the go to bait for most people are topwater buzzers. I swear if I put more “umph” into my cast I can get my bait in the other guys boat. I think that could be one cause also.
As for the lakes, metro wise has been treating me good with excitement, except nothing to show for it. So if your wondering where I am getting so many hits, its just around the metro. Yesterday couldn’t be better, the weather right around 7pm, was calm and still as ever and fish were active all along the deep water breaks and shoreline within 6-10ft with with weed growth were my main targeting areas with water temp in low 70’s. Considering from what I’ve seen, stay away from top water buzzers because every boat seems to be throwing them, but up to you.
I have a pair and they are not too bad, although I have not used them much either. Usually use them when handling fish only, and only if they are hooked bad. My brother says they are pretty sharp resistant. They look better than most I’ve seen on the market, doesnt’ hurt to give them a try. Although they are a tad spendy.
I was also out on waconia. Did not do well either. The launch was packed, not to mention the street/highway parking. Didn’t get to the lake as early as I wanted, hit every reef, weededge, and flats with no follow or hits. Called it in around noon and trolled back to launch and my brother got a hit on his crank. The little ski, 30-40 spit it out as he hit boatside though. Talked to a few guys at the launch and one group managed an upper 40 fish and another got a nice follow. Others were also blanked. Managed to get home before the downpour.
Hit another lake on sunday from noon until 9pm. Nothing until around 7pm and had a big hit and miss on the jerk and god let me tell you how bad I wanted that fish. Threw everything in the box to that zone in a 15-30 min gap until I finally gave up. Before leaving we hit a weedege where I landed a baby ski on the jerk. He got hooked back so clipped and released him asap. As for opener there sure was lots of boats out. Ramps packed in both places. I hope to hear some better stories with some better luck!
Is it just me? Back when I use to live in the cheese head state, I used to hear of awesome stink (SKUNK) encounters every few seasons when someone doesn’t pay attention to where they’re going. I yet to hear of any encounters with the stinkys in Minnesota.
Early this season we were fishing for crappies at night out on tonka and had an owl come within 2ft of my buddies face. Owl thought his bobber was food and tried relentless to snatch it whether b4 he was trying to cast or as he pulled it in. We finally gave up because we didn’t want to have our eyes snatched out. I swear this owl was stealth cause after each attempt he’d blend away in the tree’s and before you know it he swooped back down to try again. It was not small owl either, probably bout 3 foot wing span, had us all duckin for cover when he came within the boat attempt. Stupid orange bobbers
Forgot to mention I have also heard that throwing odd baits after opener works good too. After the hard pressure of opener, different presention works good. Any inputs?
