This is laughable if you think facebook is any different than this website. It’s all social media and all on the Web and all easy to steal images from. If you post a picture on this site it’s just as easy for an antis to steal the picture.
November 8, 2015 at 8:47 am #1575873I feel better now after spending pretty much the entire day on the land hunting yesterday. I saw a bunch of does. It looks like they just weren’t traveling by game cams. The ratio seemed much closer to 1 to 1. Plus I saw and shot a 3.5 yo 9 (should been 10) point that didn’t look like the other bucks. So I know there are more than just 8s.
I was surprised how many more deer were coming threw the property that we weren’t getting on cam. I think I need more cams. They seem to come from every direction.
November 3, 2015 at 5:57 pm #1575045Good discussion guys. So here is some more to chew on.
The land is new to us. We purchased it in February of 2015. The land was in an estate and not monitored by the owners. It’s a mix of tillable, a thick, heavily treed creek bed and brush/grass. It’s only 36 acres but is a pinch point and get a lot of travel. Some of the neighbors tried to keep trespassing hunters off of it. But it sounds like one or two were still sneaking on. When we first started looking at the land, I did some asking around and heard some stories about who was sneaking in on the land. I also got a picture from a friend of a friend of a nice 8 pointer taken off the land the year before we purchased it. But once we got serious about buying it, everyone stopped talking because it was apparent they were not supposed to be on the land. In fact whoever it was left a stand and trail cam and never came back to get them.
I’ve attached a picture of the land. We live out in crop land county. So around here a 40 acre woods is hard to find and a couple hundred acres of woods is considered a big woods and there aren’t many of those and they are usually along a river. This land has had little hunting pressure besides the few people brave enough to sneak in. There is very little hunting pressure around it because of its location to town and the adjoining properties either can’t be hunted or the owners only let very few people hunt. I don’t know if they are practicing QDM but I do know there are probably only 3-4 people allowed to hunt 5-600 acres to the north. So the deer have had a sanctuary in this area for a long time.
As for the genetics. Here is why I find it odd. For the past decade we have hunted at my dad’s buddies place. It’s less than 4 miles from this land and on the same wooded river as this one. He has a small piece of land as well that is also a pinch point and gets a lot of travel through it. It also adjoins a big woods with little hunting pressure. But there the bucks are all different. It seems like no two are the same. So that’s why I was surprised to see nothing but typical 8 pointers on this land. I’ve identified at least 12 different males with about half being fawns and spikes/forks. The other half dozen are various sizes of typical 8’s. It just seems odd to see nothing else.
When it comes to improving the land. This being our first year, we had the farmer that rents the land leave an acre of beans (next year it will be corn) along the west side of the field. The creek beds are very thick with trees and brush already and provide great cover. There are some open grass areas to bed as well. So it’s seems like we have our bases covered, but will keep looking for way to improve.Attachments:
November 1, 2015 at 4:42 pm #1574570It looks like nothing but 8 pointers on our new land. I’ve got picture of about 5 or 6 different 8s from 1.5 year olds up to these guys. I know there is bigger, just haven’t gotten them on film yet.

January 15, 2015 at 8:16 pm #1498100Ouch! I was looking for something in the $250-300 range. Are there any decent options in that price range?
You can get a TC Impact in that price range. We have 8 TC’s from old caps to pro hunters. The Impact isn’t as comply to shoot as a pro hunter. But it’s small and simple and easy to use. Plus it’s a tack driver. I hunt with one and could go buy a fancier one but can’t find a reason to. They are a handy, good shooting little gun.
October 24, 2013 at 12:15 am #133075Depends on where you hunt. If you hunt a low traffic area where the deer rarely smell a human, then it’s far more important. If you hunt an area that is close to houses, or farms or where people are moving through the area a lot. Then it’s far less important.
We hunt an area that is close to a house where the owner cuts wood right by the stands and stuff like that. But he’s not in the woods daily or anything like that. But still nobody uses any kind of scent control. In fact it’s the opposite. We all stink to high heavens. There is never a shortage a deer parading under the stands with little care of fact that we stinky people are 20 yards away.
Two seasons ago my dad and his buddy are sitting in a box blink in their stinky work clothes, smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee and shooting the chit. The buddy shoots a 166 inch non-typical at 20 yards with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and a cup of coffee by his side.
There have been many other close encounters with bigger bucks in the same area. I don’t know if it’s the fact that we are hunting a hundred yards from house or what. But the deer just don’t seem to care. Now I’m sure the couple monster bucks in the area avoid us because they know we are in the woods. But most deer still walk right by and either never act like they notice or they will look up at us and just keep going by.
March 19, 2013 at 7:31 pm #129780An Ariens will hold its value a little better than a cheap brand. If its in good shapes its worth $150 plus.
January 6, 2013 at 4:05 pm #128621That doesn’t sound like the guys I’ve ran with. They are more about running the dogs and not out to blast yotes so there is very little shooting. There are other groups in this part of the state and some are more gun happy than others. For me I’m more interested in getting the dogs out and worked then going home with game.
January 6, 2013 at 2:14 am #128616I’m sure I’ve ran with the guys you saw. You would be dumbfounded if you knew how many tens of thousands of acres they have permission to hunt. Some of the old timers have been running this area for 30 years or more. They are so engrained with the local farmers that they have acess to far more land than not. There are a few places that will not give then permission, but its very few. They also work very hard to avoid those places. I would have never dreamed the network they have until i started running hounds with them.

Combine the following to create a marinade
1/3 cup italian dressing
1/3 cup honey
1/3 cup bbq sauceLet chops sit in marinade for at least 1/2 hour. Then place marinade and chops into frying pan and simmer (medium low) until the marinade turns into a thick honey bbq texture. Serve with the sauce. Trust me, this is good and easy as it gets.
I tried this last night and really liked it.
December 4, 2012 at 1:43 pm #127715T/C all the way. Plus they are made in the USA! Between my dad and I we have 7. I picked up an Impact on sale this year so i’m hunting with it now. Its a great little tack driver for the money.
December 2, 2012 at 3:01 pm #127631Also, sometimes the images are better on Bing Maps. Especially in birds eye view.
December 2, 2012 at 1:30 am #127624Cnt/print screen then paste into imaging program. Unless vista is different from the other MS OS’s.
November 5, 2012 at 1:42 pm #126169Look it up on youtube. There are videos showing how to do it. Its basically just cutting a wedge out of the skull.
October 30, 2012 at 9:54 pm #125840The mom treeing a big grey in my yard today. I’ve never hunted my Terriers on squirrels, but they all seem to naturally take to them. I’ve hunted then on other small game and they take to whatever they are started on. They are small dogs. She’s nursing pups so she’s a lot bigger around then she normally is.
October 23, 2012 at 3:34 pm #125366I have an unexpected litter of Patterdale Terriers. I will be placing pups in early December. They are small, great with people and kids. But have an extremely high prey drive and good noses and are hell on any other living animal. Do you live inn the country or in town?
October 21, 2012 at 6:47 pm #125304We’ve ran coyote hounds for a while now. There are a lot of guys around that do. We only have three hounds but would run with other guys with more dogs. We kind of quit running a couple years ago. I hunt Terriers pretty hard and kind of lost interest in the hounds. Most guys around here run Running Walkers or a mix of something close.

That sounds cheap even for recreational land.

October 18, 2012 at 1:42 pm #125196Really… Not one hose cat post… i’m really disappointed in you guys…
Is there a branch in front on the camera? It just looks like a squirrel really close to the camera.
October 18, 2012 at 4:25 am #125183Thank god my wife is a truck girl. She has sworn she will never drive a mini-van. She grew up in a car family and drove cars when we first started dating. Once she started driving my trucks it was all over. She never wants a car again. I usually keep a beater car around for cheap summer commuting. But she’s much rather be driving a truck. We have an Expedition as a family truckster and she would drive it every day if I would let her.
October 18, 2012 at 4:17 am #125182There is no way to answer that question without knowing where in SEMN it is. There is a big variation in value depending on where it’s at. If it’s close to a big city, expecially Rochester, it will be much more. The closer it is to a small town will add value. If it’s buildable, that ads value. There are just too many variables. It could be anywhere from $3-5000 and that’s a big difference.

When I don’t drive my truck I feel a little out of my comfort zone, but sometimes you just have to use what’s available. In this case my Honda Accord did the trick. It doesn’t have a tailgate, but I did get 30mpg
Thumbs up to getting the job done!

Yep, gotta have a tail gate. I try to keep a small fleet of trucks around so I always have one to use.
