I just use the tails. Most of the time, I run them Texas rig- with a bullet sinker at the top of the hook and let the current pull the chub tail.

I have had some success with weighted jigs, but limited

let me begin by telling you that seeing that many chubs in a trout stream is not a good sign. Chubs is one of the tell tale signs that the stream is warm, trout prefer colder water temps; where chubs do not.

to answer your question, yes you can use chubs in streams that are not category 5: catch and release and artificial only.

If you are on a stream without those special regulations, and the chub is from the same stream, yes you can use them. Make sure you follow though with your trout bible to make sure you are in regulation free waters.

To answer the second part of your question, big browns LOVE chubs. It’s like giving crack to a baby (especially at night).

That was brought up. The suspicion is that because there is limited food competetion the trout will grow larger. A lot of designated streams in Wisconsin were stocked with stock strain trout over the years. Old stocking policies have created scenarios where trout become stunted by over population as well as tainted genetics.

More modern approaches towards stocking is focusing on using wild strain trout coupled with budgeting issues and the success of habitat improvement they are scaling back stocking operations.

I think the next couple years you are going to see larger trout getting caught in the coulee region because the warm winters we’ve had the last couple years.

For dinner, we ate at Muscoda, at a place called Vicki’s. I thought they were going to roll us out the door. Great little place with great food. I’ve never seen Andrew eat so much. It’s good to see him getting his appetite back.

I’d highly recommend eating there if you’re in that neck of the woods.

Huge hatch! It was all we could do to keep the bugs out of our face. The fish were going nuts on our side of Richland and Grant Counties.

The morning started out cloudy and chilly, but once the sun came out the water lit on fire!

My friends used little black nymphs and I used a silver PK spoon with black broken patterns made out of nail polish I carry in my vest pocket at all times.
